While I agree that R. Kelly and Mary J. Blige are the two true R&B legends of this generation, R. Kelly definitely has yet to pull of a "What's Going On". I can't think of one R. Kelly album that's going to end up on Top 10 lists of best albums. He has a LONG way to go before he can be compared to Marvin and Stevie.
...and rehashing the same instrumental for 20 songs was defintely not something Marvin or Stevie would have done. How many times is R. Kelly going to release "Step In The Name Of Love"? If R. Kelly wants to get credit as an artist, he needs to do something innovative and not take the safe root out by recreating two of his biggest hits (like we needed another whole disc of "I Believe I Can Fly" rehash).

yes i agree he has a long ways to go but he is the closest thing around to being a legend in r&b music today. I agree the recent "step in the name of love" rehashes have been a bit much lately but whenever something does really well for him he alwys uses it alot until he sets the next trend. I give him credit for setting his own trends and not following them. But "i believe i can fly" i think was an excellent piece of work and is something he will always be remembered for. i feel like that is already his "whats going on."
Mary j is the areatha Franklin iof this generation. She is assume.

I don't understand how he's had so many singles. Ever since "Ignition" he's been all over the charts, especially Urban. For instance right now he has his song with Jay-Z, a solo song, and two songs as a guest artist in the top 20 gainers at Urban. I don't think there's been a single week without multiple R. Kelly songs on the charts. But he's not selling tons of album, he's not being talked about a lot, and I don't see a lot of hype. How is it that he's releasing so much music (and getting decent R&B hits) like this? I'm so confused. He releases so many that I never hear, but a lot of them end up top 20. R. Kelly is truly the Greatest Male R&B Singer of the recent times.

I agree What's Goin On? is a good song but I'm wondering why nothing else on the whole entire album is ever remembered. Face it the song it was the song that was good and people are mistaking it for the album being good all because of one song. Lets get back to reality.... "I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly is just as good a song if not better than "What's Goin On?" despite my liking the later better.

I don't think it has anything to do with reality and it's not just one song. It doesn't even have to do with the fact that he scored three Top 10 hits and 3 R&B #1's with that album. It has to do with the concept of the entire album.
I notice a lot of people tend to feel that what they grew up with is better than what came before them and while I understand that, I personally disagree.

The opposite is also true. Just because its old doesn't make it better. I know but "What's Going On" is clearly better than anything R. Kelly has ever done. People are not saying that because it's old. They're saying it because it's true. We'll see in 30 years where people rank... oh wait R. Kelly has yet to make an album that even stands out among the rest.

We'll see in 30 years where people rank... oh wait R. Kelly has yet to make an album that even stands out among the rest. R. Kelly's albums have all spawned multiple R&B hits. I mean R. Kelly has 6 songs charting continuously whether it be producing or being a featured artists or his own material. I'm sorry but Marvin Gaye can't even begin to touch that. I like Marvin Gaye and I will agree he has some great stuff that even I like more than some of R. Kelly's great stuff but "I belive I can fly" is much more meaningful than "What's Goin On?" which is only meaningful because of the time period in which the song came out. I'm not sure it would've had meaning had the song came out during the mid 90's. R. Kelly's musical greatness helps to shape the time period in which he's in whereas Marvin Gaye's musical greatness is just a product of the time period in which he was in.

Are you really arguing that the trite "I Believe I Can Fly" is on the level with "What's Going On"? :o I don't know how to respond.

I am becuase I Believe I Can Fly is a great song because it stands on its own as a great song. What's Goin On needed the misjudgement and misfortune of others to be a great song rendering it a great song only during special times. I Believe I Can Fly is a great song no matter how you look at it and during all times.

I don't think it's a great song at all, and it's not generally considered so. It's overblown sap that makes me cringe. I hear it and I immediately think: cheese.

I think the song is sappy and is the #1 reason why I don't like it. I still think that its a great song though and has a great message. Its certainly greater than anything Marvin Gaye could ever hope to do.

Eh, both "Mercy Mercy Me" and "Inner City Blues" are songs that are more known than "I Believe I Can Fly". The album as a whole is probably the best soulpop album ever released. And it was the first R&B album ever to produce 3 Top 10 Pop singles. It probably was the first album to have 3 #1 R&B hits too. I really think you should go back and listen to that album. Because you clearly didn't 'get it' when you listened to it.

Kelly. But most people consider that a good thing.

I'll just pipe up and say I'm NOT AT ALL surprised by those who are picking R. Kelly over Marvin, etc. etc. Very predictable.

Yeah LOL
And "I Believe I Can Fly" is probably the biggest pile of shit that R. Kelly has released. Even "Step In The Name Of Love Pt. 297" is better than that song.

What... you don't think "Sex Me", "Bump N Grind", and "Ignition" had a lot of meaning? ;) LOL. "Bump N Grind" is a classic! I like both "What's Going On" and "I Believe I Can Fly."

Kelly and Marvin Gaye....they both try to recreate their strongest hits 50million different times.
