As someone who's spent his teen years in the 90s and his young adult life from then on, these are definitely important, iconic, influential, whatever, even if it doesn't mean I like them all.
These three are at a frontier between the above adjectives and simply great, outstanding albums.
These I like, but I really can't call apply the up-above adjectives to them. In some cases because there are more important albums by these artists; in others simply because they were already aligned with existing movements/trends, thus can't be considered iconic; others yet were more succesful than catalysts of important trends; and finally there are others which are simply great, but not significative.
This one may be important in some aspects, but I simply don't like them, and probably never will.
Just a quick note here: even though it's as essential as they get, Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back is a 1988 album. Pre-1990, so. :)

50 Cent @ #13? That just ruined the list. Everything else was chosen well. That #1 isn't a surprise and I totally agree with it.

50 Cent isn't out of place. It's the fact that the list compiler chose the wrong album to represent him.

So I'm biased, but I do think "Come On Over" should have made this list somewhere, especially being the top selling album of the 1990s and since the 90s.

Funny you should say that because Come on Over was included on a list in OK Magazine (I think) of the worst records. I remember see that and thinking . What jerks!

I'm confused by this. I just figured seeing as its the biggest album to hit stores since 1990..plus it truly was a musical revolution that through country back into the mainstream and produced a brand new sound for the format. It also blew open doors for women in country music. It's definetly as much of a revolution as Brook's album, which was ranked quite low..

Well, my point is that, musically speaking, she took Garth Brooks' and Tim McGraw's money, ran with it and made it an even more polished version out of it. And I guess you'll agree that by the time Come On Over was released, she sounded more pop than country anyway (and Up just confirmed that). As for the women in country, I might agree. But what did she spearhead? Gretchen Wilson? I, personally, don't think that's anything to write home about. If you want to talk about influential and women in country, my choice would have been the Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces. It also helped open doors for women in country, it sold a lot of copies but, more importantly, they really created, if not a new sound, at least a new country music paradigm, which is still very much alive, I think.

Gretchen? No..Gretchen wouldn't be in music without Shania's lead, but I would lean more towards Faith Hill for that answer.
And you are completely right about your assessment in the Chicks. Like I said, I'm biased. And maybe that album should be added to the list too.

Well, looking again at this list, I sure will put U2's Achtung Baby! in the same category as Soundgarden's, Snoop's and Ice-T's albums.

They probably meant some other album like "Aquenemi". 50 Cent is not 90s either.

That's because the article is "Top 50 Albums of Our Time," not just the 90's. It generally seems to be the last twenty years or so.

I just cannot agree with Nirvana being #1. Yes, they were "big" but they were so trendy IMO. By the late 90s, only "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was really any kind of Nirvana-memory for the mass bodies. Should they be on the list? Sure. But not #1.
I would have thought 50 Cent's FIRST album would be in the top 50, not the second one. *shrugs*

I am disappointed that there are not that many albums from female artists.
Neutral Milk Hotel deserves to be much higher than #48.

Only about 15 of those 50 CD's even belong in any sort of "greatest list"... and what critics list would be complete without a Springsteen CD in it???... and surprise surprise... not even a single Mariah CD in there??? Only the top selling artist of the decade... no Shania either... hmmmm:
Those that belong at least in the top 100 or so:
1.Nirvana - Nevermind 4.Pearl Jam - Ten 5.Green Day - Dookie 8.U2- Achtung Baby 14.Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill 16.RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magick 17.Moby - Play 19.Matchbox 20 - Yourself or Someone Like You 20.Weezer - Weezer 21.R.E.M. - Automatic For The People 28.Soundgarden - Superunknown 33.Garth Brooks - No Fences (nice token Country CD just for credibility sake) 41.Counting Crows - August & Everything After 46.Sublime - Sublime 49.TLC - CrazySexyCool

and surprise surprise... not even a single Mariah CD in there??? Only the top selling artist of the decade Since when did sales = importance? Hootie & The Blowfish's Cracked Rear View may have sold gazillions, but tell me: was it really important? Did it spwan any important trend? Did it leave a lasting influence? No, no and no.

LOL. I love it when people state their opinion and say it's fact. I actually agree with you, but it's bozo statements like that that ruin arguments.

And another thing: my statements don't have anything to do with personal tastes. It's just to do with music history and knowledge. I can't say I'm a fan of Alanis or Garth Brooks, but I'm perfectly aware of not only the impact, but the importance and influence they had on much of the music that came after them. On the other hand, I quite like Counting Crows, but I just don't see their importance, impact or lasting influence on the music that came after them. Really.
