Ok, first of all, I realize they aren't a new band but they aren't exactly huge. My question is, do you think My Chemical Romance will be the next big thing, a la Green Day, for 2007? It seems like their new CD and the first single are getting a lot of promo. The album apparantly has a lot of similarities to 'American Idiot' as well.
Any thoughts?

Doubtful. Although they are a TRL favorite, I don't think this will translate to big pop success.

Probably not, although the alternative radio station here is calling this the best album of the year (as they did with American Idiot a couple years ago).

I think their approach to lyrics and storytelling are interesting.

Nope, I don't think so. I think this album will sell around the same amount as their last album (probably a little more), and that's about it. But we'll see.

Their music is horrible. Hopefully not.

They'll be pretty big... I mean, 200k first-week sales and a soon-to-be Top 30 song isn't shabby at all for a band like them. But they have a LONG way to go just to come close to reaching the level of success Green Day had with 'American Idiot': 5.5 million sold in the US alone, 3 top 20 singles (including 2 that made the top 10, one being a #2 hit), all kinds of Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, 7 VMA wins, etc.
That kind of buzz and success, both commercial and critical, is well beyond MCR right now. If they manage 2 million albums sold, earn a top 40 hit after "Welcome to the Black Parade", and pick up any Grammy nominations, they'll have surpassed my expectations.

i think they have a shot...their album has recieved lots of praise by music critics and teir song "Welcome..." is pretty hot.....and entered just entered iTunes top 10.... just like green day, i think it will take a little time...."American Idiot"(the single) wasn't THAT huge but it became more popular after the release of "BoBD"
I seriously think they have a chance (even though they are a MAJOR guilty pleasure of mine!)

They seem a little too hard for pop radio. Before American Idiot, Green Day was a well-established band with previous pop hits Time Of Your Life and When I Come Around...and BOBD was one of the best songs of the decade. It would take alot for MCR to match that. They may be able to build to become one of the bigger rock bands of the 2nd half of the decade.

MCR is already pretty big, but I see them getting bigger over the next couple of years. They could be one of the biggest rock bands in the world within the next couple of years. Of course, who knows how long the emo trend will last. They may begin to decline in popularity in a year or two as well.

I already consider them huge. I don't think acceptance on CHR/Pop is necessary for them.
And I'm no fan, but their album is getting universal acclaim.

I don't see why critics or others are comparing it to American Idiot. Yeah, its a concept album but its not about making a statement and there are no crossover pop hits.
I would compare it more to System of A Down's Mezmerize / Hypnotize CDs. Which got them good reviews and made them an ever more succesful rock band.

They have a #13 hit now according to this week's Hot 100 :)
(I don't know why I'm smiling; I don't even like them. Is it because they are fellow Jerseyans? Maybe.)

I would compare it more to System of A Down's Mezmerize / Hypnotize CDs. Which got them good reviews and made them an ever more succesful rock band. I agree with your assessment, especially the comparison to SOAD's doubledisc album. But SOAD stood no chance at pop, maybe except for "Lonely Day", which, if added and promoted to CHR, pop radio may not have touched anyway because they were System of a Down. Everyone keeps anticipating a huge pop breakthrough with MCR because they have been an MTV, TRL, and Fuse staple for awhile. So were Korn, Orgy, and Limp Bizkit, and their career never panned out at CHR/Pop (especially with Korn). From what I've listened to and what I've heard from word of mouth, crossover success for MCR won't happen with this album. They don't have the goth power-ballads like the Cure, or the mainstream three-chord riffs that a Green Day or a Blink 182 have. That said, MCR will likely be big enough on alternative.
