I've heard from my mom that her Dominican friends have said that in the Dominican republic, they've banned the song. They say "it's too vulgar" for radio.
WTF!? They song barely contains a curse word or vulgar phrase (if any, since I've only ehard the song once). Besides, considering all those reggaeton songs around, I mean, come on. Absurd beyonf reality.

yeah, that's true.. it wasn't for curse words, it was for some of the lines that could have a double meaning.. it's still stupid though
basically these parts..
que tengo la camisa negra / y debajo tengo el difunto
pa' enterrartelo cuando quieras mamita

Week ending 4/15/2005: It makes a big jump 18-9 at Tropical. Already a #1 smash at Spanish Contemporary.

After seeing how well this is doing in Spain (#1 in airplay), I decided to DL this. This is GOOD! Killer guitar.
This is also charting on the Hot 100 if I'm not mistaken.

This is great. If he made an english version (which I doubt he would do), it would def make some mainstream buzz.

Definitely a JAM. I didn't like it at first because it sounds like "La Paga" and I was sick of "La Paga" at the time.

i heard the next single will be "Dámelo", my favorite song on the album, woohoo but i'm guessing it won't be out for a while still, since "La Camisa Negra" is still going strong

I STILL really like this song. Every now and then I hear it when I'm flipping through radio stations, and it's always very refreshing.

My momma LOVES this JAM, too!
I think it's better than "La Paga" by far now. That must be how I got over it sounding too much like it...cuz it's better!

I don't get MTV Espanol :( Which is odd, because there's definitely a lot of Spanish-speaking people in New Jersey.
I think this particular song would do even better at Mainstream radio than "La Tortura" is currently doing, if Juanes had the same name recognition as Shakira.

yeah, i think if he was given the same amount of mainstream promotion that Shakira was given with her album, he could be just as successful in mainstream, if not more

I would have to disagree. I like Juanes' music, but it's not anything out of the ordinary like Shakira's. I think Shakira's having success with La Tortura worldwide because it doesn't sound like anything else on the radio - it has some reggaeton with other influences to make a unique song just like she did with Suerte/Whenever, Wherever. Personally, I think this is why Shakira is so successful. She manages to make unique, catchy songs in Spanish and English. Juanes' songs are great but they just aren't unique enough or catchy enough to overcome the language barrier in the U.S., in my opinion.

But I think La Camisa Negra is becoming a bigger European hit than La tortura.
Also, even if they pushed La Camisa negra like La Tortura I still don't think it would do as good because Shakira had already made a name for herself with Laundry Service.
If Juanes had had a succesful English album before this like Shakira it would be doing as good or even better than La Tortura.
But lets hope Juanes doesn't do an English album, I think it might spoil something that makes him so great.
Also, does anyone know if Shakira and Juanes get on? I have this image that they don't Because there was that thing with Juanes' manager bitching about Shakira and also on the Juanes website there was an article which seemed to be aiming some hostility at Shakira.

Shakira and Juanes are in good terms, they ran into each other a couple months ago in a flight from Madrid to Bogota and had a nice chat. I think is just Juanes manager who is a little bit competitive who sometimes has said stuff maybe just to bring attention to Juanes.

La Tortura is still a bigger song worldwide than La Camisa Negra. Right now, it's the #2 song in the world behind "We Belong Together", La Camisa Negra is in the #20s. And I would disagree that La Camisa Negra is a bigger hit than La Tortura is in Europe. La Tortura has been on the European Charts for 14 weeks and is still in the Top 10 (this week #7). La Camisa Negra has only been on the chart for 6 weeks, it's peak is #7 (this week #10) and it hasn't outpeaked La Tortura yet. Juanes is also benefiting from publicity due to his European Concert Leg. It will interesting to see if his song can stay on the charts after he leaves. Shakira hasn't done publicity in Europe since Live 8 and she's still on the top of the charts. La Tortura is also a hit over most of Europe - it's charted in more countries than Juanes' single. The only country that Juanes outpeaked Shakira is Germany.
According to media reports, Shakira has sold 2.5mm copies of FO1, which is more than 1mm more copies of Juanes' album even though his album has been out for 6 months longer. You can argue that is solely name recognition, but Shakira is outselling Juanes in Latin America as well, where both artists are equally well-known. So, I have a hard time seeing Juanes outdoing Shakira's crossover success. I remember when Shakira first burst on the english scene a lot latin music fans were sure that Thalia and Paulina's english albums would be even more successful than Shakira's and look what happened. Juanes is definitely more talented than Thalia and Paulina in my opinion, but that doesn't automatically mean he'd be a crossover smash. Shakira's success has really been remarkable and unlikely.

La Camisa Negra is as or most popular than LA TORTURA, at least in the spanish-speaking territories. How it's doing in the States? Can it debut in the Hot 100?

Juanes will not be releasing an English crossover album, he said he has no interest in doing that.. he said he thinks in Spanish, dreams in Spanish, he'll continue to make his music in Spanish.. although he doesn't have a problem with other artists doing it, but for him he doesn't want to

Can someone explain in English because I am an idiot why this song was banned in the Dominican Republic? I am not understanding why these two lines are so vulgar:
que tengo la camisa negra / y debajo tengo el difunto
pa' enterrartelo cuando quieras mamita
I think I am losing the double meaning of some of this song in the translation and am not getting it. Thanks.
