I've never heard of them before, so they probably belong in this forum.
I checked them out solely because I thought their name sounded interesting. Didn't even know what genre they were. Surprisingly good. At least, the Picaresque album is anyway.

I've been hearing a song a lot lately that I just had to research, only to learn it was by The Decemberists. I figured out the song was "16 Military Wives."
I really like the song - the song sort of has a Ben Folds Five/Badly Drawn Boy/Belle and Sebastian quality about it. That's the best description I can come up with.
Looks like their Picaresque album has generated a lot of buzz. It hit #128 on the Billboard 200, which isn't too shabby for an independant album. I might have to check it out :)

They were Conan O'Brien's guests last night. I didn't catch the performance though.

I'm liking "16 Military Wives". The song is getting a little Alternative action from WFNX, WMAD, and XM 47.

Funny video too. Note to all upcoming bands: If you have to make an anti-American video, at least make it entertaining like this one.

Billboard single review
THE DECEMBERISTS - Perfect Crime #2 Producer(s): Tucker Martine, Chris Walla Genre: ROCK Label: Capitol
After the Decemberists signed to major label Capitol, fans were unsure what to expect: Would the twee rockers abandon hyper-literate tales of soldiers and swashbucklers? As it turns out they simply refined their idiosyncratic sound with an album centered on a Japanese folk tale. Each of the group's records contains one standout unlike anything it previously released. (Example: "16 Military Wives" on 2005's "Picaresque.") Second single "Perfect Crime 2" from current album "The Crane Wife" fits the bill nicely. The track is perhaps the closest thing to a disco rave-up the band may ever conjure. Narrative describes the ultimate heist, with a backing of slinky, creeping bass; '70s-style keyboards; and greatly appreciated cowbell. A rewarding, adventurous song from a band that never ceases to surprise. — Taylor Grimes

Nov 3, 11:04 PM EDT Decemberists Cancel Tour Citing Illness
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The Decemberists have canceled the rest of their fall tour, citing an illness to an undisclosed band member.
After performing in Chicago earlier in the week, the Portland-based band canceled 28 remaining shows, including concerts in major markets such as New York, Boston, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and Washington, D.C.
"One of our band members has been ill for a while but we thought all would be well in time for these tour dates," the band said in a statement on its Web site. "After a couple shows, though, it has become clear that the illness is much worse than we had initially realized. We need to return home so our friend can mend."
The statement did not say which band member is sick, and the band's record label also would not divulge more details.
"The statement is the information that we're giving out," said Courtney Martin at Capitol, which released the band's major-label debut, "The Crane Wife," in October 2006. "The statement is what it is."
The band has been touring relentlessly since "The Crane Wife" came out to critical praise last year.
"It saddens us to disappoint our fans," the band said on the Web site. "We hope everybody understands it is only because of an extreme situation that we had to cancel a tour we've all been excited about doing since the idea was originally hatched.
"Our deepest apologies but at this time no plans are being made to reschedule the dates."

Hopefully the member will get better soon. :'(
Unfortunately I missed their past two shows on their latest tour because they conflicted with the baseball playoffs. I hate October tours. >:(
