Always better safe than sorry, and the old thread had grown much larger than when some start having trouble. Wow 3rd thread in the new era. Interesting.

sorry gio...I was going by the USAtoday tally which has him barely 3,000 over....it wasn't meant as a diss to say YAY he's sold gold even after being out for five months...I honestly wasn't sure he'd get there.... so I'm happy for him...that's all... plus I'm one of those that believes certifications should be earned with retail sales not shipments....

I wasn't taking it as a diss, Shannon. But as of 3 weeks ago ATDW was at ~499k and it passed the 500k mark (per Soundscan) the following week. It has sold between 1100 and 1500 units per week (Soundscan) for the past 5 weeks, so in those tallies that round off to the nearest 100k (as is often the case in retrospectives) or even to the closest 10k, it's been at ~500k for at least that long. (A lot of the Idol sales chart comparisons, for one example, do round off to the nearest 100k for the big sellers and to the nearest 10k for the lower selling albums. That's not at all unusual in media summaries.)As I pointed out, though, even if we are going by retail sales, when ATDW's Soundscan tallies reached ~450K (90% of 500k) -- around 12-25-06 -- in all probability it already had sold 500k units retail. Soundscan does not account for all retail sales -- on average, only about 90%. Even if people don't want to accept RIAA's own rules and standards, why should sales of a CD be dismissed just because they were at Costco, Sam's Club, a record club, a Christian bookstore, or some other retailer that doesn't report to SoundScan?

oh...I didn't see it posted gio so I didn't know that...but looking at the numbers this week, yeah I can see that he sold gold last week or two weeks ago.... but I haven't been in his thread a lot lately to know that...so when i saw it I gave a whoop for him... :)
I don't think they should be dismissed but by that standard I'm sure my personal favorite is WELL over 6million in sales in the U.S. by now..so YAY Costco LOL.....soundscan IS the standard underwhich record sales are calculated...regardless of wholesale stores or other varied entities who also sell records or whatever... that's the reality and unless and until there is a way of tracking those actual sales....they just don't count in the grand scheme of things cuz no one knows exactly how many have been sold through that avenue... and therefore it's all speculation....

Yes, Kelly's Breakaway probably has already sold over 6 million units retail, Shannon. And Clay's Measure Of A Man has almost certainly sold over 3 million units retail too (SoundScan had it at 2.8 million at least 6 months ago). But I checked the RIAA website today and they still had not done their semi-annual database update that was due by the end of this month. They haven't added any award listings since last July.
But I don't think it's "all speculation" to say that a CD that has a SoundScan tally of 450,000 has, in all probability, sold ca. 500,000 units retail. It's well known which retail outlets don't count for SoundScan and what their typical market share of CD sales is. (Of course there will be individual variations, e.g., Gospel albums can be expected to have more sales at Christian bookstores than secular heavy metal or rap does. ;) ) It would be extremely unusual for a CD to sell 450k units per SoundScan and not have sold at least another 25k to 75k at non-reporting retailers.

even though most people buy their music from soundscan retailers such as record stores, walmart, target, best buy or the like? if sales are low in those type retail venues wouldn't it stand to reason they are also low in non-soundscan venues as well? I just think it's a leap to say that those stores generate that kind of selling power...if they did wouldn't the record companies "factor" them in when discussing the total sales of an album in order to bolster the image that it's selling well?

The non-reporting venues usually account for about 10% of retail sales, that's all. Of course, for some CD's it will be a little higher and for some a bit lower, but that's the norm. As for why SoundScan does not report sales from some kinds of retailers, I don't know. My guess is it might usually have more to do with those kinds of retailers not wanting to "play" than with SoundScan wanting to overlook them.
Record club sales may be deliberately overlooked by SoundScan because maybe the CD choices are somewhat dictated by the club (default selections) instead of the members always specifically making their own selections. I don't see why SoundScan would want to omit sales at discounters like Costco, though, since their prices are not always lower than the sale prices at stores like Best Buy or Target. Perhaps Christian bookstores and some very small retailers are not counted because the selection of CDs they offer is too limited, so it might skew the outcome.
At any rate, SoundScan is reported to overlook (not tally) about 10% of the sales of most CDs.
As for the record companies "factoring in" these other sales to bolster their success stories, well, I think they often do. That's one reason they tout the RIAA awards for their albums more than SoundScan #s. (Usually a CD is certified Gold or Platinum before its SoundScan numbers catch up, though there are quite a few exceptions where it's the other way around.) And when you read or hear a label's press release that brags about, say, Clay's MOAM having "sold over 3 million copies" when it hasn't been RIAA certified 3xP or reached that level per SoundScan, maybe the label is counting the sales at Costco, Sam's Club, record clubs, etc., etc.
BTW, are the CDs artists sell at their own concerts reported to SoundScan?

Nice to see the first summer tour listed. Something to look forward too. Can't wait for Summer.
The first Idol contestant to catch my attention since Clay is that Melinda. She is the best female vocalist (IMO) AI has ever had. The woman is in a league of her own. I bet none of the artists she toured with ever gave her center stage with a solo performance. I bet there aren't many artists that give their backup singers center stage.

Clay played Wolf Trap, too, and that is a similar artsy type setting.

The grounds at Wolftrap are quite nice and they do draw classy acts, but it sits in the middle of a Northern Virginia subdivision, not a cute town with Victorian houses situated on a lake. While Chautauqua is adjacent to a lake, Wolftrap is adjacent to I-66, your typical rush hour nightmare.

I was referring to the venues themselves, so I probably chose the wrong word.
But the point, is that both venues have similar reputations, and seem to appeal to similar audiences.

Clay played Wolf Trap, too, and that is a similar artsy type setting. That was my first thought as well. The venue setttings might be very different, as vafan pointed out, but both venues are in communities that show a strong support for the arts. It's the kind of setting where I would expect a lot of general music fans, not necessarily strong Clay fans, to attend. That kind of venue is great, because it allows Clay to attract new people who can then become fans.

Sounds great. I'm glad to see how much he is truly appreciated by the arts community. That is a totally different realm of people. Just like all the Christmas concerts. So many of those attending were people who follow great classis music, orchestras, classical singers, not just the current flavors of the month on radio or MTV at any given time. It really is a different world and so nice that Clay can cover both typical "pop" concert type settings and then totally classical settings. With his showing up at SCC's show, I'd say he could also capture that type of crowd, that attends the religion or family oriented shows for values etc. I have a family member that performs at shows similiar to the one SCC did, where it is a huge weekend music fest for families and very focused on clean, inspirational type music. What's funny is they actually also have hip hop and rap type songs, but they are religious or Christian based and lyrics. It is so good because the beat and presentation gives the kids what they want, but the message is what the parents and kids both love.
Geez, music had changed so much over the years. It's so great to see that Clay can truly fit into so many different formats and types of music and yet still be totally who he is. What a talented versatile guy. Can't wait for this.
