I just hope I won't be disappointed when this one comes out. Yeah, I know, how negative of me already. And one thing I'm totally surprised is how no big indie or major snapped them up pronto! That is the problem when an artist like Arcade Fire releases an amazing album like Funeral. The expectations are going to be sky high and if the next album is not quite on par with Funeral, many people are going to be disappointed (even if the product is still amazing). Quite often big name indie artists do not want to go to major labels due to control issues. I have talked with and read interviews with a few indie artists who have turned down major labels because they wanted to have greater creative control over their work and not have to worry about the big sales expectations that come with being part of a major label. There is also the stigma of "selling out" that comes with big name indie artists that go to majors, especially if it leads to a watered down and more commercialized sound. I have alot of respect for artists who put their own art ahead of the all mighty dollar. Well, not to sound arrogant, but you're not telling me anything I didn't already know. ;) But you know, I get a feeling most of them don't sign with majors for two main reasons. One, majors are known for f**king bands up when it comes to money, and I don't think many of them are willing to risk earning maybe about as much as on their indie, even with added exposure and more sales. Two, the indie ethos of "major labels are the devil, we are the real thing, blah, blah, blah" also sells some records nowadays, if you think how an anti-establishment image always sold records, and being indie nowadays became that epitome in the eyes of a growing number of people in the mainstream, whereas many years ago being indie was seen as being the geeky loser. And come to think about it, this one would be a great one for the "How time change" thread at The Lounge! EDIT: And truth be told, the difference between the majors and some of the big indies nowadays is getting blurier, really, when it comes to business practices and the way they look at music. This is just the cold reality of the game now.

Well, with a band like the Arcade Fire, would they really make that much more money being on a major label? Sure they probably have more work with getting their album out there, I guess, but they're a huge touring band and especially now, I bet they could sell out any major bar/club venue in western Europe, Canada and probably most of the US right now. They don't need a major label. They've got decent sales and a good touring record following Funeral. Kudos to them!

I've heard half the new album. I'm stopping there. Everything I've heard seems incredible (perhaps "Ocean of Noise" is a bit underwhelming), but I want to really build my anticipation for the official release by indulging in these leaked bits for as long as possible, imagining the possibilities that, for now, remain valid. I like protracting that sense of hope. I'm not concerned about facing aesthetic disappointment: 1.) so far, that doesn't seem to be the case 2.) I don't listen to the Arcade Fire merely to tickle my critical fancy, anyway. (Although they can certainly rise to that occasion when necessary). The Arcade Fire is how I deal, simply put.

PRE-ORDER THE ALBUMThe Arcade Fire - Neon Bible The eagerly anticipated second album from Montreal's Arcade Fire exceeds all expectations. Neon Bible was written, produced, arranged, and performed by the Arcade Fire and recorded throughout 2006 in Quebec, New York, Budapest, and London with recording and engineering help from Markus Dravs (Bjork, Brian Eno) and Scott Colburn (Animal Collective, Sun City Girls). With string and orchestral arrangements by the band's own Owen Pallet (also Final Fantasy) and Regine Chassagne, Neon Bible is full of both half-assed punk rock mistakes and meticulously orchestrated woodwinds. Processed strings and mandolin. Quiet rumbles and loud rumbles. But mostly just eleven songs that the band thinks are really good! Available in CD, LP, and deluxe CD format! The deluxe CD version is packaged in a hinged box with two 32-page flip books designed by the band. LP is double 180-gram audiophile quality with three sides of music and an etching on the fourth side. The LP also includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of Neon Bible. The CD edition preorder will have a special price of $9.99 through March 6 ($3 off our standard $13 CD price!). Preorders will be shipped to arrive on or around the release date March 6, 2007! All preorders will receive free with purchase a Neon Bible poster and other assorted goodies! More on this as it comes in... CD $9.99 DBL-LP $17.00 1. Black Mirror 2. Keep the Car Running 3. Neon Bible 4. Intervention 5. Black Wave/Bad Vibrations 6. Ocean of Noise 7. The Well and the Lighthouse 8. (Antichrist Television Blues) 9. Windowsill 10. No Cars Go 11. My Body Is a Cage Support a great independent record label by buying directly through Merge Records. The Standard CD Edition will have a special preorder price of $9.99 through 3/6 ($3 off) The Deluxe CD Edition is packaged in a hinged box with two 32-page flip books designed by the band and will have a special preorder price of $15 through 3/6 ($2 off) The Vinyl LP is double 180-gram audiophile quality with three sides of music and an etching on the fourth side, includes a coupon for a free MP3 download of Neon Bible, and has a special preorder price of $17 through 3/6. I'll probably get the deluxe CD edition, but I'm thinking about getting the vinyl, too.

OMG...I just heard Black Mirror.
OMG, it's so moody and dramatic. Soooo good. Sounds like a movie soundtrack.
I'm offically excited now, I liked their past singles but never got into them too much,
The Well and the Lighthouse is the song I want to hear most so far.

I've heard enough of the album to know I'll buy it and like it. I'll try to resist hearing the rest till March, but in any case, it'll be worth the purchase.

Neon Bible leaked Friday afternoon. Good shout. It's better than I'd expected. So eclectic , the tracks pick you up one minute (keep the car running) then bring you straight back down again (neon bible). With all the hype they're receiving at the moment, this will easily outsell Funeral. Can't wait to see them live next month

The hipsters are tearing AF a new arsehole. Can't imagine why...they just automatically set themselves up for disappointment when their favorite bands from 2005 release an album two years later. These are the sort of people who are very inclined to believe an artist is only as good as their best album, and that that "best" album is usually the debut. And most of them don't even know what they are hearing anyway, they just like spouting off. Anyway, I really am impressed with everything I've heard so far, but I'm waiting for the official release before I partake in the rest of the Bible.

Um, you do realize different commercial standards apply for independent artists, right? Do you even know who this band is? This is a band that had no radio support, little TV support, plays unorthodox music, and gained exposure through word of mouth & a grinding touring schedule. They have an insanely dedicated fanbase & have become one of the hottest acts in the world organically. It's truly remarkable & real inspiration to the indie community. Wake up to the world beyond TRL, sweetheart. It's not as scary as it might seem. Well, this is what happens when you post in the idiotic Music News.. Sorry, couldn't resist pointing it out. They did appear on Leno or something. I downloaded the video. Has the album really been leaked? I can't find it anywhere.

That and people often don't like change, especially if it is somehow indicative of potentially being more mainstream sounding then the last.

Win, Regine, Richard and their cohorts are gearing up to take their still-unopened Neon Bible on the road. The band will kick off their bi-continental teaser trek this evening with the first of five shows in London, followed by five-night runs in Montreal and New York City in February. They're also slated to appear at Coachella on April 28, and, according to NME.com, are rumored to be playing England's mammoth Glastonbury festival in June. As previously reported, the Arcade Fire will release Neon Bible on March 6 (March 5 in Europe) via Merge Records. Drowned In SoundArcade Fire at Westminster St John's Church, Mon 29 JanUm, contains spoilers? It seems almost redundant to point out the levels of anticipation surrounding these Arcade Fire gigs – if people have really been making such a fuss about it, then you, dear reader, would probably know about it. Then again, second guessing one’s readership is hella lame, and with such a subjective thing as a live review, a little context can go a long way. As you can see from eBay, this week-long series of gigs is much in demand. Upon the recent radio debut of new song 'Intervention' the location – a church in the middle of the UK’s seat of Government – seemed to make perfect sense. With a massive, bombastic organ ruling the mix, it seemed that these gigs, unveiling the band’s über-anticipated Neon Bible album, would be an irreplicable experience. It is, after all, hugely impractical to cart an acoustic church organ around on tour. Upon entry, the beauty of the building and the hour-and-a-half long, support-band-less wait escalate the fervour among a diehard crowd that have either scrambled for tickets in the ten minutes that they were available legitimately or paid silly money to a tout. Truly a congregation. The band process to the stage! The crowd cheer! Win Butler, cult leader and Rik Mayall lookalike, orders the audience to stand (transforming the rows of chairs from a nice sedate way to enjoy a gig into a series of herding pens, locking a standing crowd motionless)! A chuggy intro! Excitement! And then BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAM BAMThe entire first song, 'Black Mirror', is left prone by terrible sound engineering, a huddled mess of kicked drum, with traces of other instruments and voices occasionally audible. Such are the perils of trying to be idiosyncratic with your venue choices. A ten-piece band and centuries-old acoustics reduced to one coarse thud. And thus it continues for a lengthy introduction to the set. New tunes are played and it’s near-impossible to judge their quality. They largely seem to stick to the band’s trademark intermingling of mock classical grandeur, post punk drive and Motown euphoria, and as such seem to lack some of the spark and undeniable ‘specialness’ of Funeral’s highlights. There’s also more than a hint of pompous ‘80s arena rock to it all (from U2 to – believe it – Europe’s 'The Final Countdown'). Of course, this opinion is subject to change. I couldn’t hear shit. 'Haiiti' passes by, castrated of its bass hook. The sound clears up a reasonable amount, only to reveal, in 'My Body Is A Cage', another disappointment. Sure, it’s not a fault in the band’s performance or songwriting, but just another blow to the idea of these gigs as anything special, (and, really, it wasn’t much more than a passing fantasy). There is no big church organ, just a synth replication. For a band responsible for some of the best indie-club tracks around, and some of the most lively performances of the last few years, to have their audience stuck standing in front of seats, for no trade off other than a pretty setting with a really big red curtain behind the band, is a massive, massive shame. But (and it is a big but, I can’t deny), the simple fact is that any gig featuring songs as good as 'Rebellion (Lies)', 'Tunnels' and 'Power Out' performed by such an enthusiastic, committed, talented band as Arcade Fire is going to really pretty damn good. Also, when the sound is half decent, the album title Neon Bible is shown to be especially fitting. Some passages in which synths play off and mingle with wind and string instruments – at times the two French horns, violin and viola sound stunning – are intriguing and beautiful, (slightly retro-)futurism and tradition combined. The finale, though, utterly redeems the evening from any gripes. Taking up acoustic instruments and loudhailer, the band proceed through the audience and outside for an entirely captivating rendition of 'Wake Up'. Completely glorious, and with the crowd pressed together, singing into the winter air, a reminder of the band’s inspirational power. NB: You didn’t need to have tickets to see the acoustic performance. Should it happen again, and should you fancy standing in the cold a while, I'd recommend it hard.Rating: Words: Christopher Alcxxk

IdolatorIf An Arcade Fire Record Leaks Without Making A Sound, Does It Exist? After finding out Friday that Neon Bible, the forthcoming album by the Arcade Fire, had snaked into a few of the Internet's less reputable pipes, we were fully expecting to see the Hype Machine and elbo.ws charts light up with MP3s from the album this morning. But the aggregators have been curiously low on mere mentions of the band, the album, and whether or not Win Butler was still answering the 866 number. So what happened? Did the muddy quality of the leak--which got it removed from a few "high-bitrate-only" filesharing sites--cause people to bide their MP3-posting time? Was there fear that the Web Sheriff would show up and show off his gunslinging ways? Or did bloggers actually show a little bit of restraint?

THAT is Ricky. is the "mysterious manual" that appeared on their site. They really are fond of cryptic artist-to-fan communicative methods (worse than Muse).
