So yeah, if the critics whom I respect can offer me more insight into the depth and layers of the songs that people like Alison Krauss and Ray LaMontagne are releasing, and if those songs move me, there's no sales number that is going to convince me that their music isn't great.
I agree that if a critic can lead you to listen to a song or music that you normally wouldn't have listened to and gives you reason to like the music, it's all good. But, judging by your posts, I can see that you're into music and all it's layers. It's all good. The average listener is not going to listen to music to that level, he or she will listen and discover that the song touches them or makes them feel something and decide if they will either buy it or listen to it on the radio with more intensity. That's the problem I see with critics, they tend to over think the musical experience. In that sense, they're shooting reviews right over the heads of the people they're trying to nudge one way or another. I understand there's a place for music, movie and theater critics, but sometimes they tend to get in the way. We've all seen a critically acclaimed movie only to find out the movie was just too deep and not satisfying. Was it a good movie in the first place, it's in the eye of the beholder, and in this case the beholder was not correct in the public's eye. In the end, isn't that what matters. What good is art, if nobody sees it. What good is music, if people don't or won't listen to it. JMO, Thank you.

^^ Good point. I, like I think most of the public, could care less about the critics. For example between Carrie's two albums, I think 'Carnival Ride' outclasses 'Some Hearts' in terms of it's artistic value, vocals, and overall depth. While it may not have a big hook and cross-over like 'Before He Cheats' or my favourite Carrie song of all-time ('Wasted'), I find myself only skpping two songs on 'Carnival Ride', whereas, I skip half of 'Some Hearts', mostly the syrupy ballads. Sales of 'Carnvial Ride' will probably not be as great as the monster smash 'Some Hearts', but it just is a better record in my opinion.
I do think the CMAs try to show that they reward "art", much like the Grammys supposedly do, with their bias toward favouring veterans and what is perceived to be critically better material. I also think that Alison Kraus' latest effort is a better artistic record than nearly any other country record out there (lyrics and depth) but she will never sell like Carrie, Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, etc. because her record, like most "artistic records" is relatively underproduced, is not mainstream enough for radio and the masses, and is rarely ever pushed onto radio by the label like these other big name, mainstream artists.

1) A Hundred Miles Or More is not a "hits" collection--it does feature some songs previously recorded, but most of them come from ancillary sources.
2) Sales have very, very, very little to do with how "good" an album is. I think we all have a list of albums that we loved but didn't sell, and, on the other hand, how many of us still have "New Kids On The Block" cassette tapes kicking around in a storage box somewhere?

CMT will have a red carpet show at 7pm.
And I do hope she brings eye and arm candy. It was fun watching her and Tony at the ACMs. She was so giddy.

If your album receives critical acclaim, but nobody buys it, was it really that good in the first place? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that sales don't determine the greatness of ANY album, regardless of critical acclaim or whatever. plenty of albums that were brilliant didn't sell at all and other albums which were utter crap sold a ton. I'd be surprised if Carrie didn't win FVOTY, pleasantly surprised because I'm rooting for Reba.

That is going to give her a nomination and a win. Ok. I guess next year we'll give it to Ann Murray for, oh let's see, how about just because.

(ETA: this is in reply to posts #392 and 393)
It does actually sound ridiculous when you guys put it that way, LOL! Reba, because it's Reba; George, because it's George. :) But then again, this is the awards show which has a Brooks & Dunn award a.k.a Vocal Duo. And that sentimental thing happens at the Grammys too. Longevity is rewarded. Now, if B&D wins again tonight despite much bigger years by Sugarland and even Big & Rich, that would just take the "ridiculous!"cake. Oh well, awards are awards. I'm looking forward to the show. I can barely sit still as early as now!
