This dude is weird, LOL. I couldn't get into "Grace Jones". Wasn't even able to finish listening to the whole track.

Wasn't even able to finish listening to the whole track.LOL, that was fast, but I went to his MySpace page linked on the first page and listened to it in full and I like the song. It's weird, but it's cool. Also, listened to the album sampler and most of it was actually really good.

Live ReviewMonday 05/02/07 Mika @ Berkeley Square, London by Zoheir Beig on 07/02/2007 Gigwise is standing eating pink candy floss, our senses assaulted by feather-clad near-naked carnival dancers, human palm trees on stilettos, a Caribbean drumming troupe, four teenage 50s throwbacks singing Johnny Cash covers, and a Chinese dragon. In terms of visual splendour tonightβs circus themed Mika performance is second only to that Rakes kebab shop gig in the pantheon of mobile-phone sponsored, er βstreetβ events. That such indulgency should be thrown the way of 23 year-old Lebanese-born Mika (pronounced Mee-ka) is apt, given the tremendous extravagance of his music. This is a man who clearly doesnβt know the meaning of restraint or, if youβre bring harsh, dignity. Watching him pull at his yellow braces whilst standing atop the speakers, killing every cat in a 50-mile radius with the piercing falsetto of βLove Todayβ, itβs plain to see that sitting on the fence here is simply not an option. His influences are of course myriad and oft-mentioned. In tonightβs 10 song set to introduce debut βLife In Cartoon Motionβ, Mika flits between the likes of future Media Studies set text that is βGrace Kellyβ (sample lyric: βSo I try a little Freddie/Iβve gone identity madβ = How very postmodern!), the Scissor Sisters facsimile βStuck In The Middleβ, a cover of βEverybodyβs Talkinβ and, oh yes, βBilly Brownβ. This is a song that thinks the melodies of βSgt.Pepperβ could have done with, say, twenty extra layers of production. Live it is so overblown, in a set already inflated by pop extremity, that by the end Mikaβs moved way beyond any elitist notion of a βguilty pleasureβ. βMixed reactions? Sure, I get them all time. Iβm a Marmite artistβ Mika admitted in a recent interview. Heβs right. After hearing him youβll either feel like youβve intravenously injected a packet of Skittles, or you will want to shoot him and everyone involved with him in the face. Twice. The thing is his music works, and it works spectacularly. After all, we were grinning pretty much all night: a bewildered, idiotic and massive grin.

I don't think I'll buy it, but I wish him the best. His brand of pop IS cartoonish, but we could use more of it here.

I "assumed" he was gay simply becuz of all the comparisons made between him and Rufus Wainwright.

I won't rant endlessly since I don't think there are many other big fans on this board but his show was very good. I didn't think I'd enjoy it that much actually.

I'm buying the album! Fresh fun pop music. I saw him live in concert last Friday in Austin, TX, at the South By Southwest music conference. He gave a great great show! That guy can really entertain the crowd and sing well from a normal range to very very high notes, man! He was a lot of fun. For a little while between songs, he sang Shakira's Hips Don't Lie. It was fun :) Yeah, Perez Hilton was there walking around...
I don't think American radio will open their doors to him though. They didn't do it to Scissor Sisters. And so far, I think Lily Allen hasn't exploded on pop radio here yet either, right? They're afraid to play new or different types of music. And if there's any gay thing or rumor around it, forget it, they don't play either. They're so busy playing 20 bands that sound ALL like Nickelback and playing all that hip hop. SO boring.
I'm buying my album, putting it on my iPod and having fun myself with this great and fun pop music.

I was just at Target. They already put this on the shelves and some people were buying it. I was going to buy it, but I want my purchase of it to count. They also had the new Now compilation and a handful of new releases on the shelves 2 days early.

I agree. I think Mika is so similar to Scissor Sisters, I can't see him doing much better here, but who knows.
Oh well, I'm buying it. (Great prices this week, too!) I'd previously only heard "Grace Kelly" and liked that. Now I'm listening to the rest on AOL First Listen, and I think it's a fun album. I do understand the extreme reactions.

Billboard review:
Life in Cartoon Motion MIKA Label: Casablanca
This singularly named singer comes across as a blend of Jake Shears, Freddie Mercury and Elton John, with a dash of Robbie Williams for good measure. In fact, "Life in Cartoon Motion" is like Scissor Sisters-lite: Retro disco with heavy doses of rollicking piano and funk. However, unlike the sometimes-sordid Sisters, Mika keeps it mostly safe with the lyrical content and doesn't ever let his music get too down and dirty. The album's highlights include the sassy workout of the plus-sized-positive tune "Big Girl" and the chugging disco of "Love Today." Each song has nearly the same thumping disco beat gussied up with distorted guitars and percolating percussion. There's nothing new under the sun, but this a fun pop album with peppy shake-yer-rump numbers and classy jangle-pop ditties (not to mention the occasional epic ballad). βKeith Caulfield
