It's a great creative cover, with a nod and bow to Bob Dylan. I think it's incredibly smart. Melinda is definitely old school, in a good way. I hope she gets some kind of radio support. She outsings damn near anyone I am hearing on my radio these days. It's Your Love is awesome.

If she debuts on the top-200, I will be shocked. So you think this won't move 3000 copies?

I don't know... I think she lacks sex appeal and she's kinda old...any label may be weary.... And here lies the problem, ladies and gentlemen. If a big woman like Kelly Price (who had since lost a lot of weight) had released "Friend Of Mine" in 2008 instead of 1998, when it reached #1 on the R&B charts, #12 (I think) on the Hot 100 and went gold, it might have had a lot of trouble making the R&B top 10 and pop top 40. And why is that? Unlike in 1998, these days mainstream pop AND R&B radio are far more likely to prioritize their airtime toward women who would be regarded as sex vixens, half of who can hardly sing or perform. Even a thinner Kelly Price would not be able to get a potential hit song played on radio today. That's because she is not the kind of woman the industry can mold into a sex vixen that Beyoncé, Britney, Rihanna and a few others have become, the kind of sex vixen Madonna always was. Furthermore, she would not allow it... ...Neither will Melinda. And I certainly hope, neither will Jordin nor her parents. Even though I was rooting for Mel to win the whole thing in 2007, I worried back then, and still do, about the possibility that, first chance they get, the industry fat cats will attempt to force-feed the idea of seduction into any of Jordin's future projects, and twist her mind into going along with it, even though the image she projected with her first album fit her like a glove and worked quite well with the masses (almost platinum). Mel is 31. You are not going to make her over into one of the sex vixens who run the charts now. Nor is she going to satisfy anyone's fantasies exactly the way they do. Norah Jones, who was 22 when Come Away With Me hit the racks in 2002, didn't even bother to go the sex-vixen route on any of her songs on that album; yet it still sold 10 million. Mel won't sell 10 million ( nobody will, for quite a very long time to come, although I'll be shocked if she goes gold, being on an indie label); but she will get plenty of respect, because like so few female artists today, she brings listeners back to what is really important about her album: The music and the vocals. With this album (she's not the only one), she restores something that is sorely lacking among today's female artists today: substance. So, I'm not looking for sex appeal when I go to a record shop or visit the Web for my next single or album. I doubt that is the first thing on the minds of many consumers when they look for music. As a matter of fact, I'm almost convinced that too much of it is driving some customers away. And I'm not exactly worried about Mel's age, either. If a record label turned her down because of that, it's their loss, not ours. The girl is a damn good singer, for which there is no debate.

I think it was mentioned on the E! Network, along with all the other releases for today. Given the state of the industry today, and the fact that she's on an independent label, I'm looking for her to move at least 100,000 copies during its lifespan before it maxes out. She would have to debut in the top 15 for that to be almost a certainty. That is going to be a hell of a tall order for her. I wish she had released this album in December, to take full advantage of the holiday bump, because February is almost as dead as January.

Most indie artists have to be singer-songwriters since it's very expensive to get a songwriter to write original songs for them. Melinda isn't a songwriter and she's on an independent label.

Melinda's first single, "It's Your Love" is #39 on the Mediabase AC Chart for Sunday, February 8, 2009. It has 30 spins.
NOTE: Although her song was sent to AC on January 20...AC stations added this song to their format on January 26.
"It's Your Love" was also sent to CHR/Pop and Hot AC on January 20 but, at this time those formats have not added this song to their playlist.

CHR/Pop would not touch IYL if it's the only song left in the world for them to play.
Anyway, this album is really solid. She sounds terrific, but that's a given. The material is pretty good too, it's refreshing to listen to a decidedly-old-fashioned album like this once in a while. I agree with Slant, I think this might be the best debut album from an idol yet.

The album debuted at #58 on the Billboard 200, selling 11,000 copies. I'd say that's pretty good considering many weren't expecting her to even make the Top 200.

She will sell at least 50,000 before it maxes out. I hope this album is just a warmup for a future album of original material, because I'd hate to think that the music industry would deliberately shut its doors on 30-something newcomers, although it looks that way these days, compared to 15 years ago.

The album debuted at #58 on the Billboard 200, selling 11,000 copies. I'd say that's pretty good considering many weren't expecting her to even make the Top 200. Considering Melinda had gotten absolutely no airplay for her single (till the last couple of days, and even then, not very much), is on an indie label which didn't spend a dime for promo on her, and she didn't make a single national televised appearence before or during the week of the release, I'd say that's pretty damned great. I can see this album being a real decent, steady seller. She performed "It's Your Love" on Ellen yesterday (her first national TV performance of the song), so she could actually sell more this week. I'd like to see her crack the top 50. It's hard to really say how much the album could go on to sell, but it's potential can be maximised. Adele made a similar debut last year (#62 on Billboard 100, selling in the 11,000 range first week) and she went on to do around 350,000. The thing is, Adele was on a major label (Columbia), and had much more promo and radio airplay than Melinda. Her album only really started taking off after she made some key appearances on national television (like Saturday Night Live). They need to take a similar approach to Melinda's record. I expect she'll be perfoming on American Idol later in the season, but a spot on something like the Late Show would help. And the next single really should be the most blatantly commercial or radio-friendly song (which would either be "Wonderful" or Melinda's version of the Chaka Khan song "Through The Fire").

I'm loving this cd. This precisely the type of music Melinda should be making and she excels at it. Definitely one of the best Idol albums yet. I'm going to get another copy to gift to my mom.

I can't really get into the album and I love underground/indie artists plus she was my favorite of the season. The album just sounds like las vegas show tunes. ???
