Clive didn't discover Kelly, American Idol held an audition and she showed up. America fell in love with her and her voice. So IMO AMERICA discovered Kelly. Clive doesn't have the talent, he might have the gift for spotting talent but even that's questionable since he said during season 1 that he didn't think ANY of them had what it took to be a major star, that included Kelly. and let's not forget his prediction of Breakaway only selling 600K total lol
Kelly was foisted upon Mr. Davis, he didn't make her into the singer she is nor did he mold her into the star she became. He seems to have fought her every step of the way in fact; from hating Miss Independent and wanting Some Kind of Mircale as her very first "non idol" single, to hating Because of You which turned into Kelly's most successful international single to date. It seems to me that Clive is predisposed to hate the music Kelly makes simply BECAUSE he didn't discover her and he feels he's got something to prove.
I wonder if it's painfuls for the man with the golden ears to know that it was basically a talent show that discovered one of the best voices to come along in a generation. Who knows really, Kelly was in LA trying like hell to get a deal that would allow her to be the artist she wanted, turning down two of them in the process, how does anyone know that RCA isn't one of them that she turned down? How does anyone know that Clive and Co didn't turn her down cuz she didn't fit their "image" and now because of a talent show, they are forced to work with her and are finding that she's actually an artist not just a puppet......
one last question, which RCA artist was the last to sell close to 6 million in the U.S. (12 million worldwide) before Kelly did it with Breakaway?
To me he seems like a dumbass but that's just me.
she cracks me up!

Where is Kelly Clarkson without Clive Davis? Waiting tables in a diner, I would guess. As the article said, Clive is the boss and he seems to know what he is doing. Oh yes do we all remember what Clive wanted Kelly to be when she won on idol - Yes he wanted her to be Celine Dion. Oh what a boss Clive is - thrash an album, get it all over the internet that the label hates the album, have the media turn against Kelly. So he can say he knows best. If Clive was such a good boss he would be behind it 100% or not even put the album out.

she needs to come out of the closet now, everyone in hollywood knows she is a lesbian. she has been seen at lesbian parties, and the press knows, but since she is nice to the press they cover her up. the truth will set you free kelly.

Kelly and the firm were behind breakaway and worked their a$$ off and once it was successful then came mr clive davis saying he knew it would be successful from the start. but he cant do it this time if MD has a hit or sells well.

What enigmatic, 'would-be-truthful-but-I'm-not-saying-why-or-how' garbage. What kind of world do you think we live in whereby members of the press and media sit on huge secrets because the person involved was 'nice to them'? Moron. Stupid as you are temporary.

I really think Sober would have performed better in the fall or winter. It's not a very summery song. I really hope they release How I Feel... it may not be the best / deepest track on the album, but IMO it's definitely the most radio-friendly. I think if How I Feel was released as the lead single, the album would have sold much more. But I am happy with the album overall and love a few of the tracks (particularly One Minute).
Hopefully, they'll release HIF next, or at least something a little more radio-friendly so more people can discover this album.

I hate to be a Clive Defender, because frankly I can't stand the man.
America did not fall in love with Kelly....they liked her during AI. But it is my understanding that she really didn't beat Justin by all that much. Thankful did well.....but, after about a year the Media Critics were saying she was through...even Simon Cowell stated that he wasn't sure she would have much of a career.
Kelly got very lucky with the song Breakaway and the fact that Disney promoted the Single....even with that her opening sales for the album weren't all that great and it began really slipping.
Then came SUBG and everything exploded. SUBG was a song that Kelly didn't even want to record....yeah I know they re-tooled it.
BUT, without Promotion to the Radio by RCA the album would have sat on the shelves. Kelly did not do it by herself....NO Artist is a success by themselves.
I still don't know that people love Kelly...they loved her Music from Breakaway. If they loved her...she would have hasd no trouble selling that Tour. imo It was her music that sold her previous tours.

I don't know whether it's true about Kelly or not, but except for Perez Hilton, the media does not "out" celebrities. They didn't out Rosie or Ellen, Lance Bass, that Doogie Houser guy, TR Knight from Greys Anatomy, etc.. It seems to be a line that most people in the media don't cross.

Kellie on Kelly (from Kellie Pickler's latest inteview in EW): EW: How do you feel about the Kelly Clarkson controversy? It seems like there are a lot of people rooting for her to fail right now, for some reason. KP: I'm honestly a really big Kelly Clarkson fan. And I love how she stands her ground. I respect the fact that she said, ''I really want to do it my way this time. I just want to see what it'd be like to put out my music the way I want it to be.'' She could have done a record the exact way that the record label wanted her to do it — there's still gonna be people out there that don't like it. Either way, you can't win for losing. We've got more important things going on in the world today than whether or not you like somebody's song on their album. There's a freakin' war going on.... [but world issues] are not being given half as much attention as Britney Spears for not wearing panties. Who cares? If the girl doesn't want to wear panties, leave her alone. I'd rather focus on my troops that are dying for me so that I can actually sit here and have this conversation with you, and homeless kids that are in shelters, than whether or not Britney has panties on. To tell you the truth, I don't even have any panties on right now. I don't care! Let's focus on things that are important, and let people be happy. Let Kelly absorb — she just made a record, let her enjoy that moment of being able to turn on the radio and hear her song. Let her enjoy her work and her passion. www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20007164_20008533_20047451_3,00.html lmao. Kellie is somethin' else!

Fans worshipped a fellow idol Thursday when pop star Kelly Clarkson joined Reba on stage at Country Jam USA in Eau Claire. Reba and the "American Idol" winner combined on Clarkson's hit "Because of You." The crowd's piercing screams halted the concert momentarily, but the women finished the track that will appear on "Reba Duets" due Sept. 18. "Kelly, you can't leave now," Reba said. Clarkson, dressed gothically in a black T-shirt and black jeans, stayed for two more songs, harmonizing on Reba's hits "Why Haven't I Heard From You" and "Does He Love You." Earlier, Reba also had pulled opening act Blake Shelton on stage during her 17-song, 85-minute show. The two Sooners flirted on the playful "Oklahoma Swing." "One of the greatest things about being in this business is having friends come on stage like Kelly and Blake," Reba said. www.leadertelegram.com/story-news.asp?id=BDRA2VSH56N

America did not fall in love with Kelly....they liked her during AI. But it is my understanding that she really didn't beat Justin by all that much. Wrong again dessertflower. Kelly won by 16% over Justin. Kelly 58% Justin 42%..... Kelly Is 'American Idol'In Show's Final Duel, Clarkson Wins America's VoteNEW YORK, Sept. 5, 2002 CBS) Kelly Clarkson, a cocktail waitress from Texas whose signature song was Aretha Franklin's "Respect," was judged America's next pop star Wednesday by the viewers of "American Idol." Earning a unanimous judges vote and a 58 percent of the nationwide vote, Motown-voiced girl-next-door Clarkson showed off her stunning lungs in a barrage of songs featuring many past finalists. Clarkson earns a recording contract, and will release a CD single later this month and a full album in November. After more than 15 million telephone votes were cast by viewers, the 20-year-old Clarkson beat Justin Guarini, the big-haired crooner from outside Philadelphia. Clarkson was the survivor among 10,000 entrants who thought they had what it takes to be pop stars. Along the way, the Fox series became the television hit of the summer, particularly among young viewers. Even Simon Cowell, the British judge with a penchant for the withering insult, was seen to wipe away a tear at the result. Clarkson earns a recording contract, and will release a CD single later this month and a full album in November. "How am I going to sing this next song while I'm crying?" Clarkson said before launching into her upcoming single, "A Moment Like This." She sang "Respect" for her initial audition and again Tuesday, before the final voting opened. More than 18.2 million people watched "American Idol" Tuesday night as Clarkson and Guarini, 23, sang three songs each. More were expected for Wednesday's two-hour finale, as it has been the most popular show for weeks among teenagers and young adults. Fox stretched out the suspense in a two-hour show, announcing the winner seven minutes before it ended. Celebrities sprinkled the crowd at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, including sitcom stars Ray Romano and Jane Kaczmarek, of "Malcolm in the Middle." More than 100 million votes were cast over the course of the show this summer. One viewer, singer Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, said she voted five times for Clarkson, her fellow Texan. "I knew from the first episode that Kelly was the best one on there," Maines said. All three of the show's judges — Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul — thought Clarkson was the most deserving of the two. The British Cowell said he had to "begrudgingly admit the talent is better here." Trying to discover stars among amateurs has a long history in American entertainment; Frank Sinatra won a radio amateur hour in 1937. More recently, the band O-Town's career was launched through ABC's "Making the Band" and Eden's Crush on the WB's "Popstars." Will Young, who won the British version of "American Idol," sold more than 1 million copies of his first single. Clarkson, of Burleson, Tex., is set up for similar success. Two nights in a row, she sang the songs that will be on her first single before a prime-time audience. Fox will feature the show's top performers on a special Sept. 23, and they'll head out on tour soon after. The "American Idol" winner has also been tapped to sing the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial on Sept. 11, the Washington Post reported. A sequel to the show is expected on Fox this winter. Through the final weeks of competition, Clarkson and Guarini said they were the best of friends and weren't interested in undercutting each other. "I'm so happy with tonight's decision," Guarini said. "No one deserves it more than this woman." © MMII, CBS Worldwide Inc. All Rights Reserved. Although I'm critical of MD and the drama surrounding this era, Kelly, herself, seems like a very decent human being. The same cannot be said of cowards who hide behind the relative anonymity of the internet to post malicious crap such as you did. The words I would use to describe such people probably cannot be used on this forum. Besides, exactly what does Kelly's -- or any singer's -- sex life have to do with the music they make?

I still don't know that people love Kelly...they loved her Music from Breakaway. If they loved her...she would have hasd no trouble selling that Tour. imo It was her music that sold her previous tours. Interesting take, and probably one that's a fair assessment. However, there are always exceptions and I am one. I love Kelly, but don't like much about MD. I don't hate it, and it certainly is not the worst music out there these days, but it doesn't work for me on a number of levels.

looks like Kelly had some fun at Reba concert yesterday: Great stuff, sixofclubs. Thanks for posting those links. I love the music those two make together. I especially enjoy 'Why Haven't I Heard From You.' Although I'm not a big fan of country music, I do love the country rock stuff. Sigh. It's exactly that sense of fun that's missing from MD. Not that every song needs to be fun, but it's missing almost completely from MD. :(

I like some of Gretchen Wilson's stuff, and also Montgomery Gentry. I enjoy Lynyrd Skynyrd, especially their classic 'Sweet Home Alabama.' So yes, if Kelly puts out something along the lines of country/rock/blues, it would be music heaven for me.

Oh, and BTW, Focus, I am THRILLED to pieces at how great the Reba-Kelly duet of 'Because of You' is doing on Country radio. A little off topic for this thread, but can't hurt to take a moment to say here that it should be in the top 10 shortly. The charts seem to move with glacial slowness on the Country side, but it's already shown at #10 on the HDD version of the Mediabase chart. Very cool.

If Kelly wants to release another album quick - thats great, whatever makes her happy. But I am far from done with this one. Sober is amazing, and there are another couple tracks that still have potential. If by 2008 we have 0 news, then I'll move on...maybe.
