Yes, I'm sick of it... a lot of songs have been burned out on me because of hearing them on the radio too much lately.
I'd also prefer more variety myself.

Yes. And it's too late to apologize. LOL. The stations here repeat the top 5 songs at least twice an hr. 3 times if they're doing a countdown.

I agree with you guys there since I don't want to hear the same song by Rihanna two hours later by the same disc jockey and it's not a weekly coundown

Yeah. It's ridiculous! Once an hour? That's crazy. Seriously! I think it's absolutely stupid and I can't explain in words on this board how stupid I truly believe pop radio in the US is that they can play a single song any more than 60 times a week. Wow! It's just actually truly insane...! So much so that I'd LOVE to see the radio industry crumble because of it. Because it's STUPID!

Yes, I'm sick of it. It's getting annoying. I can listen to the radio for like a few hours a day or so.

It's terrible. I'll hear "Clumsy," "Don't Stop the Music," "With You," and "Shadow of the Day" (among others) on my half-hour long drive to school, and I'll hear a lot of those same songs on my way home.
This past year, there have been a number of good songs on the radio, but because radio overplays the songs, I get sick of them and don't want to hear them again. By the time the artist's CD is released, I'm burned out on the first/second single already.

And you know what's so strange is that now more than ever it seems radio are putting songs in even higher and higher rotations. Songs are now reaching the 10,000 spin mark like it's nothing! I know it's mostly due to an increase in panel size but i bet if we averaged out the spin per station, it would be significantly higher than it was say 5 years ago. I remember when songs would only need 8,000 spins to get to #1. Now it's insane!
For three years in a row now, the ultimate highest spin record has been broken.
First it was 'Hollaback Girl' in 2005 Then 'Hips Don't Lie' topped that in 2006 Then 'Big Girls Don't Cry' topped that in 2007 Then 'Apologize' topped that several months later!

It's disgusting!
I think the radio industry is AS MUCH to blame for the decrease in album sales as illegal downloading is. THAT'S how stupid I think this overplay is.

The repeats of songs enter recurrent status even on AT40 and Rick Dees!

no....top 40 audiences listen in smaller time chunks (not always) so they wanna jam the hits in more often then say an ac station that is on all day in a workplace.

CHRs geared at teen demos def. do...but that's cause teens spend so much less time listening each day they HAVE to hear their fav. song when it comes on every hour
It's weird but I really think Hot ACs are to "blame" for teen CHRs repeatin songs so much, cause their existence allows a lot of major-market CHRs (and some medium-sized market CHRs) to exclusively target teens...in other words, any CHR that gets ratings as a "station you listen to at work" isn't gonna power rotate hits excessively cause people listen for much longer amounts of time each day...

You people and your pop stations. It's unfathomable. I get sick of songs when I hear them 3, 4 times a day. And yet your stations play them 15, 16, 17 times?
17 F**KING TIMES?!?

^Hey both my CHRs are capped out at about 70 plays per week max lol...but that's prob. cause there's no Hot AC here, so both of them cater to the workday crowd...

Nothing against your stations atlantaboy (though I still think it's a bit much), but I'm referring to the ones that play their songs 100-120 times a week.

ok, here's my suggestion, since I came up with this poll: email this link to all the program directors at your chr/pop station and see what they have to say!

HELL YES.
This may just be me but I dunno, but back in the 80's and 90's, there were many different artists topping the charts and it wasn't the same people. Now it all seems to be just Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, and T-Pain all the time to me...

Guys It may seem stupid to many people, but FM radio is very VERY desperate right now for ratings...They understand the "normal" listener only listens to the radio about 30 mins - hour a day (usually just drivin in the car) so THIS is why they play the songs that "test" well on the hour every hour, to CAPTURE that audience. Offcourse, I DON'T think those type of pop stations are for or even considered as background music for stores and such for this.....some stations are programmed for people who ONLY listen to radio for a few minutes each day. Hope that made sense.

will overplaying a single actually kill album sales?

Guys It may seem stupid to many people, but FM radio is very VERY desperate right now for ratings... I doubt this helps. Well, I can understand why it might help but I can't see it being more helpful than just bad. Is it a common thing in the US for people to complain about overplayed songs?

Maybe if they stopped playing the same 5 songs 100 times a week they would have a little more room for the actual pop music icons to be played. Janet, Madonna, etc... Those 2 are probably still held back by radio politics though. It wouldn't surprise me.
