Nevermind didn't think that it was defensive... neither was that my intention
mabbe you should change your perception that all mariah lovers are trouble makers and defensive people?

I think she needs to get wild more. She seems to stay in her comfort zone a lot, and like people said before, recycling her sound sometimes. She hasn't made anything super groundbreaking or anything surprising for me. Basically, I want her to experiment more. (Doesnt mean she makes bad music so dont jump on me.) Oh and 1 one more thing. This is not Mariah's fault, but she honestly deserves more than 5 Grammys for her outstanding career. Beyonce already has more than her

People forget that Mariah only just turned 38. Half the artists she's been compared to, who are already considered icons or iegends, took decades to acheive and cement their statuses. And all of them have had years of industry experience on her.
Take Madonna for example. People often fail to realize that Madonna had an 8 year head start on Mariah. 8 years of sales, 8 years of trial and error, 8 years of experience and 11 years younger to boot.
Every year that goes by adds considerably to her legacy without her even doing much. IMO, even if she ceases to be commericially viable within the next few years, time remains her best ally. Even if it may be more debatable now that she's a true icon, it safe to say that 10 years from now, when she is 48 (still younger than the current Madonna) , the status of her legacy would be in a whole different arena.

When Madonna's career was 18 though, she had made much more of an impact than Mariah's.

Honestly, Mariah has achieved so much success that I cannot pinpoint something that I feel she needs to achieve.
One of the things about Mariah that I can appreciate is that she has always been about the music. No need for controversial stances or gimmicks/looks... just the music. But then again when you are blessed with such a gift and are not trying to be every woman why go down that path if you don't have to/want to?
I believe her impact aside from her music is that she is someone who is a poster child for multiracial identity. I know plenty of people who have identified with Mariah and her struggles growing up due to being multiracial- a subject that she has openly talked about since the beginning of her career. So to me when people say she doesn't stand for something I have to disagree. It may not be as in-your-face as some of the antics that some artists have done but its still an everlasting impression.
There is also Mariah the songwriter. She has made some true classics in her career but what I really enjoy is that she has the ability to infuse what is modern and make it listenable therefore continuously making herself relevant. I think Blender magazine said it best when they called her A pop genius (making genius pop) ~ TMB review. Also there is the fact that she has made some great universal records to boot.
Sure on a image note I would love for Mariah to be a bit more fashion forward but she is who she is. So if she likes rocking the spandex dresses then hell I love it. As long as she continues making quality music that has elements of seriousness & fun then I won't have anything to complain about. ;)

I dont know if I would call all of Mariah Carey music "quality" music. It might be fun, but I more often than not have problems with the quality of it ("Touch My Body", "Shake It Off", and "Its Like That" jump to mind immediately)
I still dont view Mariah as quite as iconic as Madonna.

I still dont view Mariah as quite as iconic as Madonna. She never will be. And Mariah has chosen that fate, happily.

But Madonna was already an icon by the time Mariah got her first hit. :) And go by your logic and compare Mariah after 8 years to Madonna after 8 years, she doesn't stack up. Again, Mariah has chosen not to take the "icon" path, and she's done so done so on her own terms. Why her fans can't accept/acknowledge it is perplexing.

Madonna is more of a cultural icon, and Mariah is more of a musical icon... that's how I see it.

Madonna is an icon because she's done shizz outside of music. Mariah's just that chick with a lot of #1 singles. She doesn't particularly stand out. I'd say Britney Spears is more of an icon than she is tbh and she's only been around for a decade.

Yet I guess I can appreciate that just because a song has not so deep lyrics doesn't mean that it isn't quality worthy. Anyways you are entitled to your opinion. :)

When Eucalyptusa's career was 18 though, she had made much more of an impact than Mariah's. Madonna became an icon because of her media antics, i.e. the shocking things she did for publicity, not her music. Madonna is pop culture icon far moreso than a musical icon.

More #1's on Hot 100.
All Top 6 songs on the Hot 100 in a single week. Perhaps stretch it a bit to all Top 10 songs.
A 2nd Artist Of The Decade award.
More Grammies!

I wouldn't mind her doing a light pop/rock album ala Breakaway. It would be really different for her, but I think it could work! Yeah I'd actually love to see her try pop/alternative...IMO she could def. do it, just not sure that's her personal taste It would def. get her more respect all-around though as a diverse artist

Out of all her albums, you choose that? Butterfly is really her most artistic album by a mile, and also her best.

I actually think that even when Mariah was at her heaviest Madonna would have been able to lift her on a cross- considering how muscular and manly she is. J/K.

Since she already did what 99 percent of other so called stars wish to become , she should experiment, country dance techno whatever even jazz blues she should just enjoy make music and continue to prove she is the best female artist ever to walk on this earth.

I think Mariah has had a lot of significant music, but her 'Shake It Off' 'Touch My Body' type songs can definitely be burried now. Amazing mariah songs include:
Hero Fantasy Always Be My Baby One Sweet Day My All We Belong Together

Since she already did what 99 percent of other so called stars wish to become She really doesn't seem like a superstar to me (i. e. I know she is, but it doesn't seem like it)...no huge stadium sellouts, very few songs on the radio past the year they come out, and (compared to people like Madonna, 50 Cent, Kelly Clarkson, and Nickelback) seems like not that many people talk about her outside of this board She does really well on the Billboard Hot 100, but her hits are kinda tailor-made to hit #1 there (combination of pop, rhythmic, and urban sound that appeals to all three of those formats that have high spin totals) I guess it's that I've never heard a new singer list Mariah as an influence, or even refer to her music at all - but I don't watch A. I. that much so I could be completely off base lol

Congrats on her Billboard record, she must be so happy. But there's still tons of work to be done.
She needs to reach the level of respect and legendary status that her peers (Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston) have already acheived (at the same or younger ages btw).
She needs to become an icon.
She needs to learn how to peform and get some stage presence.
She needs classic songs that are remembered once they are gone from the Billboard Hot 100. 50 Years from now, people will still remember Elvis and Beatle songs, not Mariah songs. She needs to change that.
She needs to gain the respect of the music industry (more Grammys, lifetime achievemnt awards etc).
She needs to learn to sing with emotion and passion. Singing is more than just hitting high notes, melisma, and fluffy layerings. She need to dig in to a song and connect with it. (We Belong Together was a good start)
She needs to take herself seriously. Act like a woman, not a 12 year old girl.
She needs to take a risk and be creative. She hasn't strayed from her Billboard Hot 100 Hit Making formula ever.
Bottom line, being a legend that is remembered and talked about years later is more than just Billboard Chart success. She's still got quite a long way to go.
