Jewel. I dunno, I wouldn't really consider Mariah a singer/songwriter. To me a singer/songwriter is more like an Elton John or Jewel type of artist. I hope I'm making sense here lol. Your definition of "singer/songwriter" mirrors Randy Jackson's. It can be argued who is better at the combo craft of singing & songwriting but there is something all three of these artists have in common and that's the reason this poll exists; all three write, compose, & sing. It's the common definition though. It might not be the "literal" definition but if you googled it or looked it up on wikipedia, the definition isn't so much the literal meaning but the "genre" that it represents. And a lot of "singer/songwriters" are folkies like Woodie Guthrie, Bob Dylan types as well as when the definition expanded in the 70s to include people like Carole King and James Taylor.

Elton John by far. Not even a fair comparison. His songs are classics, memorable. Why is Jewel in here? You may as well add Michelle Branch too then. Now I love Michelle. I really do. But I don't think we'll see the day her songwriting will even begin to compare with Jewel's. Jewel is one of the best songwriters of this generation, in my opinion, and I think many would agree if they gave most of her material a chance. Of course Elton is the biggest legend out of the three, but that's not really a reason for me to vote for him as I prefer Jewel.

Elton John writes music not lyrics so I'm not sure if comparing him to people who write lyrics makes all that much sense. Yeah, that's what I thought too. I wonder how many people voted for him for his lyrics, not knowing that he doesn't write them LOL

Oh well, him writing the music doesn't make him any less of a genius!

I went with Elton John since he has some real classic songs and the album "Songs from West Coast" was excellent.
I would rank Jewel far above Mariah Carey, though all three are good.

I'll break this into eras... Jewel is currently doing the best job of songwriting out of the 3...
1997-present: Jewel 1990-1996: Mariah Pre-1990: Elton

I don't even think Mariah is a "singer/songwriter". Yeah, she writes songs and she sings them but the term "singer/songwriter" is actually considered to be a genre of sorts, isn't it? Kind of like a rapper. Just because Fergie can rap, would you call her a "rapper" for example? And does Mariah compose her songs the way "singer/songwriters" do? Either way, she wouldn't win this one. I don't even know why she was included in this poll, which is lacking. I wonder if the topic maker could even think of other singer/songwriters aside from two super obvious ones and just wanted to include Mariah into yet another topic. lol. I bet Elton John was googled in there too. lol. I don't think she's a particularly good songwriter anyway. Umm, yeah, the topic maker would be me. I LOVE it when you talk about people as if they don't check their own topics! LOL LOVE IT! Anyways yeah, I was thinking of THE most successful singers who also happen to be famous for writing their own music. Sure I could have included people like Patty Griffin but they really haven't found commercial success like the others listed have. Also yes it was kind of difficult to think of Singer/songwriters who have had this kind of success who this board would even consider voting for. I doubt people would have cared if it had only been Carol King, Patty Griffin, and Alanis Morissette listed. (Although they are all great in their own right) Also your comment about the creation of this poll just for another Mariah inclusion holds no weight since you, as an admin , should be able to see who I voted for! Ugh. Ouch! That's gonna hurt!
