All 3 are famously successful singer/songwriters, but who is the best at their craft?

Well there's three artists I never expected to see in a poll together.
Elton John

Elton John.
It's hard to even think of Mariah Carey as a songwriter. Yes, she does write songs, but it's not really where her talent lies.
Jewel is a decent singer-songwriter but she hasn't produced nearly the breadth of work John has demonstrated himself capable of creating.
To be fair, neither Carey nor Jewel has really had the time to develop artistically that John has. Still, I can't see voting for either one over him at this point in time.

I don't even think Mariah is a "singer/songwriter". Yeah, she writes songs and she sings them but the term "singer/songwriter" is actually considered to be a genre of sorts, isn't it? Kind of like a rapper. Just because Fergie can rap, would you call her a "rapper" for example? And does Mariah compose her songs the way "singer/songwriters" do?
Either way, she wouldn't win this one. I don't even know why she was included in this poll, which is lacking. I wonder if the topic maker could even think of other singer/songwriters aside from two super obvious ones and just wanted to include Mariah into yet another topic. lol. I bet Elton John was googled in there too. lol. I don't think she's a particularly good songwriter anyway.

I LOVE it when you talk about people as if they don't check their own topics! LOL LOVE IT! Anyways yeah, I was thinking of THE most successful singers who also happen to be famous for writing their own music. Sure I could have included people like Patty Griffin but they really haven't found commercial success like the others listed have. Also yes it was kind of difficult to think of Singer/songwriters who have had this kind of success who this board would even consider voting for. I doubt people would have cared if it had only been Carol King, Patty Griffin, and Alanis Morissette listed. (Although they are all great in their own right) Also your comment about the creation of this poll just for another Mariah inclusion holds no weight since you, as an admin , should be able to see who I voted for! Ugh.

Elton John by far. Not even a fair comparison. His songs are classics, memorable. Why is Jewel in here? You may as well add Michelle Branch too then.

Jewel is on this poll because from the get go she was known as a Singer/Songwriter. She has had TREMENDOUS success doing such. Give me one album by Michelle Branch that has sold over 11 million copies in the US like Jewel's Pieces Of You did. I would have put Alanis in the poll had I thought of her when I created it.

Elton is great, but Jewel is my personal favorite. Her lyrics definitely blow me away.
Mariah's a great songwriter when it comes to more commericial music.

Looking back at these three, I am glad I picked the ones I did. Jewel's written songs (for the most part) are not really commercial sounding, but put out more of a folk vibe, while Mariah is the exact opposite. Her songs (for the most part) are completely commercial, where Elton is somewhere in the middle. Thx for making me think of that J to the ANET!

This is kind of random. Elton John, MC and Jewel are all targeting different audiences and markets and the only thing that bounds them is their songwriting and singing, which a lot of other artists do. ???

As if you since you weren't around when that artist was really current you can't enjoy their music or appreciate it. Not talking to you in particular lzhaol, but just to that idea in general. Some Elton songs that come to mind that are good lyrically are: Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me Tiny Dancer Your Song I Want Love Candle In The Wind there are so many, pretty much all of his music is good lyrically actually.

This isn't even a contest. Elton John. He has years and years and years of putting out successful records. He may not be a big now as he was 20 years ago.
How bout
Good-bye Yellow Brick Road Daniel Phildelphia Freedom Levon Crocodile Rock...and on and on and on.
He can still sell out Arenas, even after all these years.

Elton John writes music not lyrics so I'm not sure if comparing him to people who write lyrics makes all that much sense.

Jewel.
I dunno, I wouldn't really consider Mariah a singer/songwriter. To me a singer/songwriter is more like an Elton John or Jewel type of artist. I hope I'm making sense here lol.

Your definition of "singer/songwriter" mirrors Randy Jackson's. It can be argued who is better at the combo craft of singing & songwriting but there is something all three of these artists have in common and that's the reason this poll exists; all three write, compose, & sing.
