David Cook Talks About Album
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Newly crowned "American Idol" David Cook, already topping the iTunes music download charts, said on Friday he hopes to put out a rock album that will "make the hair on your neck stand up."
Cook, 25, a Missouri guitarist who was tending bar before auditioning for the most watched show on television, also said his best musical advice came from Frank Sinatra.
Cook won the seventh season of the singing competition and a recording contract on Wednesday, beating 17-year-old crooner David Archuleta by a 12 million-vote margin in the record 97.5 million votes cast by viewers by telephone and text message.
Cook's first single "The Time of My Life" and the three songs he sang in this week's "American Idol" finale were the top four downloads on Apple Inc's iTunes music store on Friday.
Cook said he would not be putting out an album of standards even though he won fans on the show, which is broadcast on the Fox network, a unit of News Corp, with alternative versions of pop classics such as "Billie Jean" and Lionel Richie's "Hello."
"I think it's going to be a mixture of my writing and hopefully writing with other people. I just want to come out of the gate with a solid record," he told reporters in a telephone conference call.
"It'll probably be a rock record. I just want to make a record that's going to make the hair on your neck stand up ... Even if it doesn't do well commercially, as long as I can put out a record I am proud of -- that's the goal right now. And hopefully the success will follow."
Cook is not likely to start work on the first album until the Top 10 Idols finish a three-month U.S. tour starting in July.
Cook, who played in bands for 10 years trying to make it in the music business, said his biggest lesson came from an article he read during the show on how the late Frank Sinatra focused first on the lyrics of his records.
"It made me think I needed to step back and before I even tried to learn the song, I needed to read the lyrics," he said. "That really helped as far as trying to find the vibe."
Despite a new haircut and losing about 15 pounds during the hectic "Idol" schedule, Cook said he had changed little else.
"I didn't have any expectations of what the show was going to do for me or what I was going to do for the show," he said. "I just went into it as an opportunity to expose myself to a large audience."
"American Idol," has become a pop culture phenomenon, drawing an average 28 million viewers this year and producing stars such as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie

I keep hearing that they want to put out album for the Davids rather fast...not sure if that is a good idea or not. Good part is they'll be fresher in the memories of the people. Bad part is that they won't be able to capitalize the Thanksgiving and Holiday sales. I won't be surprised if the labels already have songs ready for them to be recorded anyway. So, is Cook with J or RCA? ??? I guess the good part is fast sales, but the negs are way high. Like the material being bad...

I'm looking forward to David's first album, and am glad he's going in a rock direction.

Congrats to David Cook. I love this guy so far, he seems very grounded and in on the joke so to speak, as far as not believing your hype and how to play this little Idol game. I hope that he stays that way and I can't wait for his album. Hope it is good and stays true to him as an artist.
I think I saw on HDD that David was going to be on J Records. Don't know for sure though.

I really like David Cook and I can't stand Daughtry. He seems like a cool guy and isn't buying into all the hype that is AI. He doesn't seem to have the overblown ego problems.
I actually like the Coronation song. It's cheesy, but less so then the cornonation songs of others winners. I think he's going to be very successful.
I sure hope Clive doesn't get his hands on him.
I don't think he's be a band either, but then Chris's Band is pretty fake.

but then Chris's Band is pretty fake. I dunno, playing your butts out on tour for almost 2 years and then writing and recording songs together for the new album doesn't sound fake to me anymore. ;) Why don't you guys like Chris? He is a pretty down to earth guy imo. Same here. I love him and I think he's an extremely nice guy who always ends up being played by the media! Oh well, it's hard to change people's minds. Chris can be very polarizing sometimes - either you get him or you don't. ;) Anyway, back to David, kcchica, I think he's going to RCA. I read that All Access listed "Time of My Life" as from RCA Records. But David said he's still working on the details with the record company unlike Archie who already said on Larry King that he's going to Jive.

Time of My Life is being played right now on WDOK in Cleveland. They are usually slow adding stuff!

If Archie's album is coming out in July (I don't know if this is still true? I just remember it being said somewhere), whats the point of winning lol? If the winner doesn't even get to have their album out first, what a pointless win.

And I'm almost positive they'd release Cook's first.

Cool, thanks for the info.
Let's hope not, but then again he did have a hand in Daughtry's album, and as much as I do not like Daughtry, that was a solid album and has gotten great promo and sold well.
I just think it is a matter of opinion and perception, I don't like him at all, to me he crosses that thin line of confident to cocky/arrogant. But to his credit, he does seem to really enjoy music, and stays out of the celeb BS.

I've met Chris and he's definitely serious, more into his music and likes to be chill.
With that said, I can't wait to see David Cook and the other idols live. I like most of them, so I can't wait to meet them.

He comes across as totally full of himself in his interviews. There are reports out there from from Venues he has played at that he acts like a real asshole. Even people that I know that are fans of his admit he is egotisical. But back to Cookie, he comes across as a total Class Act....even though he needs to have better taste in women. He is reportably dating Kim Caldwell. Cookie has posted a Video Blog thanking his fans. Aww I  him. Thank You Video

I think you're looking at a 4th quarter release for both David's albums. As they will be on tour all summer, it's unlikely they will be albe to dedicate the time to finish a record anytime before Sept. I sure hope David Cooke goes the route that Chris Daughtry did....I think he was at his best on Idol when he was singing the bombastic pop/rock songs. Song selection will be important...perhaps Daughtry could write for him..or Nickelback. I hope Diane Warren will be invovled as well....she could craft the big rock ballads he is sure to record. Maybe Luke G/Max Martin could be invovled.

We are never going to agree on Chris...and frankly I could care less about him.
This is the David Cook Thread...maybe we could focus our conversation on him.
David has put out multiple Independent albums on which he wrote his own material...and it is pretty good. From what I heard Tedder and Jesse McCarthy may be working with him on writing. I believe he would never put out a CD that he wasn't involved in writing.
I think they will go in a Pop-Rock direction. JMO

Yes, please keep the discussion to David Cook. If you want to discuss Chris Daughtry, there is an entire thread devoted to that.

These guys, especially Tedder, just seem to be the go to guys these days, don't they? I don't care who Cook works with, as long as it isn't manufactured/vanilla soundy, and he is able to do what he wants and is happy with the final product.
I HOPE to goddess that the whole Kim C/David C thing was just a joke. Not that it would really matter in my life, but that girl gets on my nerves! Besides, I think his schedule may be alittle full at the moment! JK around here, his dating like concerns me not, just his music.

If David and Kelly are both working with Tedder maybe there will be a duet.

I've enjoyed several of the interviews David had on TV over the past week. More and more, he's turning out to be my 2nd favorite AI winner after Kelly C. I'm really starting to get excited about David's forthcoming album.

David Cook Dating Past Idol Kimberly Caldwell
This season's American Idol champ, David Cook, is dating second season alum Kimberly Caldwell.
"She's great," Cook tells Extra. "So far, I've had a really good time with her."
Cook hasn't been shy about his interest in Caldwell. He even asked her out on the TV Guide Network.
"I'm just excited because I finally get to talk to you," he told her during an interview Wednesday night on the Idol Tonight show. "I've been hearing you say all these nice things about me all season, So I'm actually going to ask you to dinner right now."
Caldwell accepted, with a hug, telling the camera after Cook left, "I just got asked out on a date."
And while he's interested in her romantically, Cook admits he's not entirely familiar with Caldwell's music. "I knew who she was, but I can't remember a song that she sang," he told Extra. "I'm probably in the dog house now."

That pretty much kills his schedule through the end of the year, at least. But Kimberly is a hot chick, so it's understandable why he'd be interested in her.

You know, for a long time I've wondered why there hasn't been a male singer to make it big singing the sort of Pink/Kelly pop-rock that is so big right now. We have male rockers, but they are far more classic rock and less pop in the pop-rock combination. I think it sounds like David might be heading in this direction. I'm interested to see how the industry would react to a real POP-rock male artist.
