I like that photo of David. Underneath his weird bangs and scruffy beard, he's really a good looking guy. He has a killer smile.

David Cook to Perform at NBA FinalsWill his vocal display be a slam dunk? ET confirms that "American Idol" champ DAVID COOK will commence his reign with an appropriately larger-than-life gig: He'll perform the National Anthem at game three of the NBA Finals next Tuesday in L.A. The 25-year-old rocker will command the Staples Center spotlight minutes before the Lakers' KOBE BRYANT and the Celtics' KEVIN GARNETT take center stage, continuing their teams' duel for the biggest prize in all of pro basketball. Tune in to ABC Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. EST to watch. This will be Cook's first appearance at a major sports event since being crowned the winner of "Idol"'s seventh season. His live performance continues the tradition of former "Idol" winners singing the National Anthem at the NBA Finals. www.etonline.com/news/2008/06/62444/index.html

Here are some of the best parts of the long Kansas City Star interview with David: What can you tell us about the record? It'll be a jazz calypso record. No, I'm lying [kidding]. It'll be a rock record. The goal is to put some twists and turns in it and make it a little interesting. We're actually in the writing process now. I have songs that I've done in the past that have been submitted. Nothing as of yet.
Have you selected a producer? We're in the midst of figuring that out. A few names have been thrown out but nothing solid. Hopefully we'll get that mapped out here in the next week or two.
When do you hope to release it? The goal is mid-fall, mid- to late fall. [Mid-fall would be the middle of November.]
Will you be part of a band or will you be a solo artist? I like the idea of the band atmosphere. Being out on the road you should to be able to have a "band of brothers" to kind of ease the transition. We're bouncing around a lot of ideas. Nothing is set in stone but I'm of the mind a band woudn't be such a bad idea.
So now it’s full steam ahead on the album? We started the writing process yesterday. Once we get the producer mapped out, its gonna be kind of full steam ahead. We’re gonna be tracking this record while I’m on tour, which is a little bit of an interesting process. … I want to get this record out tomorrow, if possible. Obviously that’s not. So the goal now is to get this record done as fast as possible and trust your instincts and trust your guts and let the record speak for itself. I want it to be a snapshot of where I’m at.
Will you release anything digitally? Your “Idol” songs went crazy on iTunes. I still have not wrapped my head around that, to see the single doing as well as it is and to have that many people spend their hard-earned money on these songs is amazing. For me, I want this record to do well because obviously if it does well then I get to do another one. So for me the goal is to get the record out in a fashion that keeps people invested and makes this whole thing feel successful. I said after the finale that this is hopefully the next phase in the relationship between me and the people who support me, and I want them to feel as much a part of the process as I do. However we do that, if it means putting these songs out digitally a little early, or do a little extra touring, I’m down for all of it. I’m certainly in the position I’m at based on people investing not only themselves but their phone bills in me.

The first clue was the producer thing because I was like "wait, I though she already knew who she was working with." Then I read the part about the band and I was like WHAT? Kelly making a band? lol. And then the stuff about whether or not she would be releasing anything digitally just seemed like the dumbest question ever. lol. Anyway, back to David. Sorry guys.

Let's hope the band's name isn't COOK and we see him heading to the tattoo shop.

Thanks for the link. He started out like his nerves were getting to him a bit, but he picked it up and did a nice job.

This is "the" American Idol. ??? I just don't see the appeal. I'm sure he'll have one or two decent hits on his record.

Don't shoot but IMO he was way off key at the first half. It was almost painful. The second half was decent but still not that spectacular IMO. He looks scared out his mind. What the heck happened to him? Was he sick? ??? Oh well, it's not the end of the world! :)

Really off night for Cook on the NA. Youtube Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry, Jordin and Elliott if you want to hear it done better. It's no big deal though.

The "Cookie" didn't get baked all the way through, obviously. I don't see how this guy beat a vocal masterclass like David Archuleta.

Actually, the middle of that was really good. He has a crazy range. Not sure what was up with the beginning though.

He's a great singer- no one is perfect all the time. He shouldn't be doing "national anthems" anyway, he's the rock winner- that should be for the also-ran's.

Actually, the middle of that was really good. He has a crazy range. Not sure what was up with the beginning though. It's obvious he was nervous at first. It also could be that he's less comfortable singing a capella. He went with a classic straightforward version of the anthem instead of anything fancy.

Not to get into a fan war kind of thingy here, but I have no clue what genre Archuleta will fit into except maybe Disney faux pop schtick. He's boring and has zero musical identity.

He's signed to Jive records and he is going for a pop/R&B John Mayor-esque sound. I think that will work out well for him. z100 will def. spin his songs. I can't say the same for Cook, they won't even play his winning song. (They played Jordin's song)

(They played Jordin's song) Cook's winning song is the worst of all the winners' songs in my opinion, through no fault of his own. Those things are forced on the winners. As for Archuleta, pop/R&B? I'm skeptical. Anway, that's off topic for this thread. Maybe I'll catch up with you on the Archuleta thread after his record comes out.
