The full studio version is great, I have listened to the song like crazy this morning, just can't get enough! This is such a well-written song and it's a good story song as well (which is what I like).

I heard the song on the radio this morning and I have to say, I don't care for it at all. It sounded like a straight up pop song to me. From the lyrics, to the production, even the way that Taylor sang it, all sounded way too pop for me. I really, really enjoyed her debut album, but if this song is any indication, I may just want to save my money on her sophomore project.

He kneels to the ground and pulled out a ring and said Marry me Juliet, you never have to be alone I love you and thats all I really know I talked to your dad girl, pick out a white dress It's a love story, baby just say yes.
More similar to Oh My My My than I would have thought!

just heard the song... my unbiased opinion is that the song is not bad, but def. not great... i miss the raw elements that "Tim Mcgraw" and "Teardrops on My Guitar" had, i do think that she sounds better on this than her last 2 singles. sure this is going to be a hit because it is Taylor and etc, but there are much better country songs on the chart, i hate the fact that they played safe after the release of "Our Song", i still think that if they had released "Tied Together With A Smile", "The Outside", "A Place In This World" or "Mary's Song (Oh My My My)" she would have more respect than she already has, i know that some people are already starting to think that she only knows how to sing one kind of song and that is not true.

Can't wait to start hearing this awesome song on the radio!

This doesn't sound Country at all... I really liked all of Taylor's singles from TS so this song is a real disapointment...

This is mediocre at best, even slightly worse than her previous releases. It's the very definition of bland. I thought Romeo and Juliet were supposed to be dead heartbroken in the end? She could've at least picked a different reference.

I mean I guess i do hear some similarities on the verses, but this is still alot more watered down in the production. The real difference is the chorus and the way sings this song. The song comes across to me as kind of choppy and very beat dependent. If they slowed the song down a little and allowed her to really use her voice, it would 10x better IMO. I think she sounds more grown up and mature on TM than on this song.

I wasn't feeling this at all at the beginning of the song and actually felt a little disappointed because I love every song off of her debut CD, but by the end of the song I was hooked... I hope it does well!

What a crazy good song. I haven't even stopped to pay attention to the words yet and I'm already hooked.

I thought Romeo and Juliet were supposed to be dead heartbroken in the end? She could've at least picked a different reference. I agree. That's not the only thing about the lyrics that doesn't make sense. Taylor throws in a "You were Romeo/I was a scarlet letter," in the second verse, I believe, and that makes absolutely no sense. If "Juliet" is a "scarlet letter," either that makes her Hester Prynne, a tragic heroine branded with an "A" for adultery or it says that by being with her, Romeo/Arthur Dimmesdale will be branded by that "A" for being an adulterer himself. If either were the intended interpretation, the song would be a lot more interesting (and blasphemous) than it is, but I suspect this is actually a case of literary allusions gone awry. And the love story in The Scarlet Letter doesn't exactly end happily, either. [/end spoiler] Oh, and none of the characters named were princes or princesses, either.
Moreover, the passivity of the protagonist in this "Love Story" bothers me. It feels very un-21st century for a female's life to be so completely dependent on the decisions of the men/boys in her life. I know it's teenage fantasy but I don't have it in me to find this quaint.
The music in the song does a good job of conveying a soaring moment of triumph when Romeo comes along to propose, but since the song gives neither any indication why "Daddy" first wanted "Romeo" to stay away from Juliet nor any indication what made "Daddy" change his mind, it falls a bit flat for me.
I do think this song is catchy, which is interesting because it doesn't have a great melody. And it is entirely within Taylor's achievable vocal range. There are, as a consequence, moments in the verses where I quite like Taylor's phrasing and tone. For instance, the way she sings "I'm standing there" and "Say hello" in the first verse is quite pretty -- she does a good job singing a soft "r" on "there" and has a pleasingly light but resonant touch on those phrases. They may not last long but this is still more than I could say about "Our Song," Picture to Burn," "Should've Said No," and "Change."
Incidentally, the banjo melody sounds a whole heck of a lot like the instrumental hook of the Police's "Every Breath You Take," no? And with each passing recording, the tone of Taylor's voice bears a stronger and stronger resemblance to that of Avril Lavigne's.

Honestly Taylor may call herself a "country artist" but all her songs are Pop Songs they just add country instruments. Pretty pathetic that country will make this go #1.

Her vocals actually reminded me of Vanessa Carlton at the beginning. This is exactly what I would expect from Taylor Swift...

I just want to throw this out there, why are yal so hard on Taylor and her singles for being "pop"? Look around the country genre at MOST of the music by females and tell me Taylor is the only one guilty of this. That's where the genre's headed and gone. It would be an incredible list if we listed all the songs released in the past year by females only that were 'pop' sounding.

I don't notice that at all. I notice, like Zach said, very comparable music to most other females in the genre. The only difference is that Taylor has had more success on the pop front, and with that brings a backlash for certain reasons I won't go into.

The only difference is that Taylor has had more success on the pop front, and with that brings a backlash for certain reasons I won't go into. I am certain there is a reason that this has been brought up but if I stated that it would only start a big commotion and that's not needed here. Yes, because alluding to "certain reason " without actually naming them is both a productive way to have a conversation and non-passive-aggressive way of taking a swipe at fellow posters. DCXfan and Zach, you should know better. Coyly trying to skirt board rules is not going to impress the Pulse staff. And, of course, we have a warning system for anyone who acts like they don't know better.
Anyway...maybe Taylor was heeding those complaints that she has remixed her songs for pop and trying to make sure she won't have to do that now to cross over! ;)
In seriousness, the sound of the song is not an issue for me, because I think artists should be able to make the music that best reflects them, without regard for genre boundaries. It's just that this song strikes me as sloppily written.

Most of those female vocalists sound country though. Taylor has a pure pop voice.
