What is up with the cardboard CD covers? I've seen A LOT of them lately. Jesse McCartney, Rihanna's Reloaded, Colbie Caillat, iCarly soundtrack, etc. What's wrong with the Jewel case? I hate the cardboard covers.

You mean the digipack cases? I have liked them sometimes. They look nice for a couple of days, but when they get dusty, the dust gets stuck and it gets ruined. The cases scuff, scratch and get ruined easily. These are supposedly "green cases" and are supposed to be better for the environment.
The cases are thinner, however, I have to store them in another location since they don't fit right in my storage racks. I prefer the jewel cases too.

And the CD's are hard to get out so you have to fight with the case and might get fingerprints on the CD!

yeah not really into them. I just like a proper case, maybe with a slipcover over a jewel case if its some special edition or something

Are they the ones that don't contain a booklet? I own one of those. I notice that a lot of recently released GHs albums (Britney, Bruce Springsteen, BSB, Destiny's Child, etc) are out in the cardboard cases. I own Bruce's GHs but it came with no booklet or anything. I've never seen a new-release out in that form unless that's the way it was (ie. Imogen Heap's digipack case or the new Jason Mraz album that both contained a booklet inside.)

I ABSOLUTELY HATE THEM!!!
So I went to buy Coldplay's new CD at BestBuy and it was in one of these cheap cases. Well, the next day, I went to WalMart, saw the same CD in a real jewel case. I was so mad.
I think it's a way for record labels to save money. I mean, it has to be cheaper to manufacture junk paper than plastic cases. There's a few CD's out there that I want, but I REFUSE to buy them because they only come in this cheap paper crap.
The CD's are a pain in the butt to get out, I'm always afraid I'm going to scratch it. And the whole thing is ruined if it gets wet. It's not sturdy like real CD cases. It makes it harder to to store the dang things.
Ugh, I just REALLY hate these cheap cardboarad cases. I'm glad someone started this topic, gave me a chance to rant about it to someone who understands (because my girlfriend can careless).

I don't mind them because they ARE better for the environment. But I do ruin them after a week.

Sometimes they do include the booklets inside. Most of the albums I have bought that were in these cases had the booklets included. For the Britney one you mentioned, there were two editions, a regular one in a jewel case and a limited one in this shiny cardboard case. I bought the limited one since it came with a bonus CD with some remixes and a megamix.

I think Max is referring to the DBS (disc box slider) editions of greatest hits discs from Sony-BMG (for example Britney, Destiny's Child, Bruce Springsteen and R. Kelly) that started appearing last year. Those never have the booklets inside, but you can retrieve the info from a website: www.sonybmg.com/musicmadesimple/It's annoying, but they're very cheap, at least here in Europe.

Yah, those are the ones.
I like the box cases most times. They're neat. Not a fan of the DBS ones though.

And the CD's are hard to get out so you have to fight with the case and might get fingerprints on the CD! Don't like them for the most part either... the lone exception amongst the CD's I own being Colbie Caillat's Coco which opens into 3 sections and the CD is housed in the normal jewel case type thing on the section on the right... you just pop it out like normal. It's the best of both worlds IMHO.

They're the cardbox cases with the plastic CD holder thing glued in the middle and then a booklet thing inside the cover.

Faith Hill's "The Hits" is of the old style... that's the only other CD I've purchased the past year with the cardboard cover...

There's all kinds of crap cardboard packaging these days. Actually, I like digipaks.
SonyBMG hits titles are coming in new slider boxes. Then there's digipaks, like what Dolly Parton's Backwoods Barbie CD came in, and I don't mind those. Sometimes they're even attractive. And then there's the eco-wallet crap that more and more CDs are coming in these days. Ugh. Fortunately, I've yet to buy more than one eco-wallet - Celine Dion's Taking Chances CD.

Jewel cases wouldn't be an issue, if people didn't get rid of their cds

I will buy the Coldplay album again. I also saw the Jewel Cased Coldplay CD at Wal-mart. Might have to buy that one. Anyway, that's what they SHOULD do. Make half cheap cardboards, make half jewel cases.

I was wondering why there was this new trend. I guess it makes sense about the environment though it's not like people throw out their CD cases on a regular basis. The "Prince Caspian" soundtrack was in a cardboard case too with a booklet inside.

though it's not like people throw out their CD cases on a regular basis. Awe, I remember the days when record stores would sell single jewel cases. Oh how times have changed.

I hate them. I also really hate that they are rectangular covers, instead of the ordinary square ones. That just annoys the hell out of me. Also, I can't stand how easily they can get ruined. Jewel cases are much better.
