I adore the woman. I think I'm one of the 42 people who actually bought her latest album, Backwoods Barbie. I think she's an absolutely amazing singer and songwriter. She's SO expressive when she sings. You can just tell what she's feeling. And her songwriting is so simple, but it's got such immense emotional depth to it. And a great example are two songs from her Burlap And Satin album originally written for The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas called "A Gamble Either Way" and "A Cowboy's Ways." Anyhoo, enough about MY thoughts. What about y'all's thoughts?

I got interested in Dolly Parton back in 1997 after she recorded that cover of "Peace Train" by Cat Stevens. I actually heard the dance remix of it by Junior Vasquez which actually was at the same tempo as the original (more or less). Then I heard other songs like "9 To 5", "Jolene", her original of "I Will Always Love You" and more. I really like her voice.

She - among a lot of other things - is one of the main reasons why country music is regarded as a circus joke outside the US.

She - among a lot of other things - is one of the main reasons why country music is regarded as a circus joke outside the US. That's harsh. Her public persona is pretty over-the-top (and a little embarrassing at times), but she's still an extremely talented singer and songwriter.

I bet she's amazing when she's with Emmylou and those country types! I don't know much Dolly but she seems great! I grew up on her Christmas album with Kenny tho. LOL!

On a semi-related note... have any of you heard of Dick's Last Resort? I'm not sure if it's a chain or not. There's one in Boston. Basically, the entire restaurant is a joke. The waiters are mean to you intentionally. Your place mat is a paper towel. They give you bibs. It's just a huge gimmick and is really popular for birthday parties.
Well, their menu also offers some creative names. And well... if you want two chicken breasts, you order a "Dolly Parton".

agrees........ she just seems like a joke to me and not a real artists, almost cartoonish I'm just a backwoods Barbie, too much makeup, too much hair. Don't be fooled by thinkin' that the goods are not all there. Don't let these false eyelashes lead you to believe that I'm as shallow as I look 'cause I run true and deep.
I've always been misunderstood because of how I look. Don't judge me by the cover 'cause I'm a real good book. So read into it what you will, but see me as I am. The way I look is just a country girl's idea of glam.
I'm just a backwoods Barbie in a push-up bra and heels. I might look artificial, but where it counts I'm real. And I'm all dolled up and hopin' for a chance to prove my worth, And even backwoods Barbie's get their feelings hurt.

While I agree that Parton definitely has an image and has at various points successfully marketed that image, her work as a songwriter (and singer) is quite impressive. I definitely think her image overshadows that sometimes, but I don't believe that it should. I would submit songs like "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" as some good examples of what Parton is capable when she's on top of her game.

Yeah, those "Peace Train" remixes were excellent. I love Dolly- great songwriter and she's a survivor- she's still selling after 40 years and still putting out albums - she's an Icon and she's sweet and likeable and still influencial- Pickler is trying to "be" her- you can't argue with success- she's made a dent almost everywhere and I still think she's got awhile to go. Young people are into her, which is always a compliment. She has an incredible legacy.
