I certainly wasn't expecting them to release back-to-back Troy heavy songs (although Troy is definetly featured more on their new cd), but I guess this is an ok choice. I like the sort of stripped down feel of the song, although the backup singer on the chorus is a bit distracting (the first chorus especially). On first listen I thought this was a good song with a lousy hook to hold it together, but after a few listens, the hook is growing on me a bit. If they were going to release a slower song, I wish they would've released Long Line Of Losers. That's far from their best song, but at least it had a hint of thier pre-GH "edge" that I've found sorely lacking on thier last two cd's. Overall, I guess this is a good choice, and it's better than the half dozen drinking/partying/womanizing songs they could've went with.

Is this CD any good? I've been wanting to get it but just haven't had the incentive to buy it. "Back When I Knew It All" is a good song and all, but just not enough to get me to buy the album. I'll probably end up getting it, but I keep putting it off.

If you like the partying and drinking type songs, you'll probably like the album (one of them is even a duet with Toby), because it has several of those songs. I think the album is pretty decent, although it lacks the distinctiveness of their pre-GH albums. My favorites are One Trip and One In Every Crowd.

awesome, i would have released "I pick my Parties" with toby or "It Ain't About Easy" before this song to keep up the tempo following "Back When" but this should do well. It seems like i've heard this song before though...is this a remake? And To answer your question, definitly buy this album because its troy and eddies best so far!

I think this is a great album. I don't dislike Montgomery Gentry, but they aren't my favorites either. But this album really stands out, IMHO. Most of the songs are uptempo, and there are certainly several strong choices for future singles. There's nothing fancy with this album, and nothing "out of the ordinary" from past MG albums... this one just seems to draw me in a little more.
"One In Every Crowd" is probably my favorite off this album and I'll be shocked if it's not released as a single.

I'll probably end up getting it, but I keep putting it off. Yes, it is superb. I was very disappointed with their previous album but this one is extremely impressive. I'm not sure about the contention that there is a vast slew of drinking/womanizing songs; the album seems to be a nice balance of the grit and polish that makes Montgomery Gentry fairly unique. The themes are typical Montgomery Gentry too - the toughness of life, realization and personal growth, simple pleasures and (yes) women and alcohol. The duet with Toby - I Pick My Parties - is actually very good (more of a Toby song than an MG one, I think, but it would certainly be Toby's best rowdy song in a while had it been a solo recording) There are two songs that I think are fairly weak (Now You're Talking and God Knows Who I Am), but aside from that, all are very good or better. There's a good range of tempos, themes, sounds, and Troy-Eddie balances, and overall it works superbly as an album. Montgomery Gentry are currently opening for Toby Keith on his Biggest Baddest Tour - a very good fit, I think - and I'm lucky enough to be headed to Phoenix, AZ to see them tomorrow night. Further off-topic: I heard on the local radio station here that Montgomery Gentry is giving away ten full scholarships to the University Of Phoenix as part of a Back When I Knew It All promotion which was very impressive to me. So Roll With Me is not the best song on this album by any means; Long Line Of Losers struck me as the obvious second release, and One In Every Crowd should still be an inevitable single. The Troy-heaviness is fine and the production isn't offensive to me. By no means is this the best song, or single choice, in my opinion but it is solid - and look forward to the third single being even better. Or just buy the CD already ;)

Didn't Del Amitri already sing this song?
Oh yeah, that was 'Roll To Me'.
And I still think the Toby/MG duet would be so much more funnier (and disturbing) if they had changed that "r" in the song title to an "n".....

Thanks for all the comments yall. I have each of MG's albums, but felt a HUGE decline in quality with their previous attempt "Some People Change" that I became uninterested in them, although still a fan.
This album sounds good from the comments. And I keep forgetting about that Toby duet, I really want to hear it.

I really like this one. I would've preferred Long Line of Losers as a second single, but I know that'd be kinda odd since it's a cover (then again, that didn't stop them with Some People Change lol). Hopefully it'll be another number 1 for these guys.

So I finally bought this album and have listened to it a few times the past couple days. I'll write my comments here.
First, I have to say that this is my favorite album from them BY FAR!
But right off the bat, I REALLY don't like the first song. And when I first heard the album, I was disappointed and wasn't expecting anything better from the rest of the album. I've only listened to it twice (and the rest of the album at least 4 more times) so I really don't remember why I don't like it.
I also don't like "Long Line Of Losers". I heard it twice as well and really don't like the lyrics. I have a problem calling family "Losers". It seems to me that he's bad mouthing his whole family. Whether or not that's what the singer is trying to convey, that's how I take it and I really have a problem with that.
Ok, so two songs that I don't like, that quick.
Then I liked the next song, then the next, then the next, then the next, and the next thing I know, the album was over and I was highly disappointed. lol, seriously.
I LOVE "Now You're Talkin". I like the lyrics, love the sound, and the way Troy sings it, his southern accent really stands out to me.
I never really cared too much for the song "Back When I Knew It All" until I heard it all the way through after I bought this CD. Now I see why it did so well on country radio, it's VERY radio friendly. I just never could get through the whole song when I heard it on radio. I thought it was too boring and generic sounding. But I gave it a fair listen finally and really do like it. The lyrics are great and I love the way the two sing together.
"Roll With Me" is a GREAT choice for the next single. It's an excellent midtempo song. Great sound and lyrics.
Ah, I love the lyrics of "One In Every Crowd". When I first heard it, I laughed. I like the rowdyness of it and the instrumentation.
"Look Some More" has a good melody to it and I like the instrumentation.
Come on now. I'm a Toby fan. You KNOW that I like "I Pick My Parties". FUN song! Love their voices singing this rockin tune.
I really like the lyrics of "It Ain't About Easy" along with the instrumentation.
What I've really noticed is that not every song is a "rowdy, bar, drinking, hanging out, getting wasted" type song. While there are songs with other topics on here, most of them SOUND like "rowdy, bar...ect" songs. Maybe it's their southern rock type thing?
Also, it seems that their utilizing their "DUO" role. Yes MG, you are a DUO. Maybe Brooks & Dunn and Sugarland should learn from yall. Anyways, I like that I hear both guys on most of the songs.

I wonder if something went wrong in the download... I actually looked up the lyrics to make sure I had a Montgomery Gentry song. The lead singer on this song (Troy??) doesn't sound like MG, IMO...

Except for on this song, which is pretty much 100% Troy, lol. I get what you mean about the album as a whole though. And I think you may be right about the songs all sounding like parying/drinking songs, but not all of them actually were.

You know, I was just in the album sales thread and saw the sales for this album so far. It's very disappointing.
I wonder if "Roll With Me" is the song to boost album sales?

Is there a video planned for this? I remember reading about MG's partnership with reactor watches and how Reactor provided their entire band with watches during a video shoot. At the time I assumed that the video shoot in question was for Back When but now that that single is done now I'm guessing it was for Roll With Me. Anyone have any info supporting or disputing this?

You know, I was just in the album sales thread and saw the sales for this album so far. It's very disappointing. I still can't figure that out. Most artists can go gold with just two Top 10 hits. Some People Change had a #7, a #1, and a #3 and yet almost nobody bought the album. "Back When I Knew It All" was MG's fastest-rising single by far and yet nobody is buying their albums. In the words of Scotty Emerick, what's up with that?

(Mongtomery Gentry, Craig Morgan, Phil Vassar, Joe Nichols, etc.) Don't understand why. ???

Since you bring up Craig Morgan (well, you sort of brought up Craig), I'm going to be very anxious to see how well his new album on BNA sells. I always assumed that being on BBR, an independent label, was the reason he had trouble selling albums, because of the smaller promotional budget. Now that he's on BNA, we'll see if people buy a few more albums (his last 3 have all been very stellar).
Getting back to MG, the problem selling records has really only been with thier last two albums. 3 of thier first 4 studio albums went platinum (Carrying On only went Gold), and even thier GH went Gold. Some People Change was one of the most disappointing albums I've ever purchased, and I think that was echoed in the lack of sales. Despite a very successful lead single, I guess people are a little weary to buy this record for fear it's another SPC (although I think it's much, much better than SPC). That's just my theory though.

Good point. I agree their last album certainly wasn't their best.

My brother bought the album and I've listened to it. I actually think it's pretty good. "Roll With Me" was the best choice for next single, IMO.

There's not a Montgomery Gentry single I don't like. If my station didn't overplay 'Back When I Knew it all" it would be my favorite song on the radio right now. As for the newest single, it's kinda growing on me. Good stuff.

I too have loved most of their singles (Hillbilly Shoes, Cold One Comin' On, Lonely and Gone, Daddy Won't Sell the Farm, My Town, Speed, Hell Yeah, What Do You Think About That, Back When I Knew It All, etc.) I was an instant fan when I heard their first single.

YDYT was awful, and What Do You Think About That was too preachy for me, but I'm a fan, and this song is really growing on me. I wasn't very optimistic to start, but now I'm think this song should easily make the T10, and T5 shouldn't be too tough (although I doubt it's strong enough to go #1).

I agree with the top 5 assessment. I think it has a chance to hit #1 though. And if it does, I think they'll start seeing more consistent success. I'm REALLY excited at how their past few singles have done.
I just looked at wikipedia at how well each of their singles have done and I'm shocked. I know wikipedia isn't always 100% correct, but it's close enough for me. Their past SEVEN singles have hit top 10. I had NO idea. But still, for some reason, they're just not that big yet. I'm hoping with a few more successes and some hype, they'll hit that next level in their career.
