You don't see that many six-notch leaps within the Billboard top 10, but that's what Blake pulled off this week, going from #9 to #3. He kind of got lost in the shuffle on the way up the chart during the last three months, between the big AJ-Dierks-Billy C group and the powerhouse Toby-Kenny-Keith-B&D group, but he now looks to have a solid chance at #1. Didn't think he'd ever be capable of pulling off back-to-back #1s in his career, but I suppose with the quick changeover at #1 the last year, everyone has a chance to put together a streak.

If this does make it Blake continues to have at least one NUMBER ONE song on every album. Assuming we count "Home" from PURE BS even though it wasn't on the origional album.

This also marks the first time that Blake has followed up a #1 hit with a T5 hit, let alone a possible #1. Blake's previous best follow-up was Goodbye Time, which reached #10 on the heels of Blake's #1 hit, Some Beach.

He's mentioned how his career has kinda ebbed and flowed and how the whole goal with this album was to kinda keep everything going along and to finally not lose momentum. He's likely doing that.

Blake may be succeeding in keeping up his radio momentum, but this particular song doesn't seem to be doing much for his album sales at the moment. Startin' Fires just cleared the 100K in sales mark on the current chart, in its ninth week of release. That is especially concerning when you consider that the first six weeks of the album release were during holiday shopping. This is my least favorite single from Blake in a long time; I think the melody is generic and that Blake doesn't distinguish himself with his vocal. I think the (sort of) title track would have made a much better lead single, and hope that it gets released.

Although this song has really grown on me, I still don't think it should've been the lead single. Good At Startin' Fires would've worked, or even Here I Am or 100 Miles. Any of those songs would've done a better job representing the album, and probably helped to sell more records. A solid string of T5 hits from this album should help pick up sales though, and there are plenty of hit-worthy songs, including Pure BS carryover I Don't Care, which has #1 written all over it.

They have to release "I Don't Care" at some point. I mean, why would they stick it on the new album if they didn't plan to release it?
And I agree, that track has #1 written all over it.

I really like the song I Don't Care, but not at the expense of 100 Miles, Good at Startin Fires, and Never Lovin You, all of which I would love to see be singles. I might be totally wrong, but I just feel like I Don't Care is too slow moving to be a success on today's country radio. I would love to be proven wrong though ;)

Does anyone happen to know where 'Austin' wound up on the year-end charts in whatever year it was released?
Bob Kingsley recently stated that it spent five weeks at #1, and I was trying to figure out who was the last artist whose debut single wound up #1 for the year before James Otto did it last year?
I know that Clint Black finished #1 and #2 for the year in 1989 with 'A Better Man', and 'Killin' Time'. but I can't remember if anyone managed to duplicate that during the nineties, or if Shelton did so with 'Austin'?
If this CD is half as good as his previous one, I'm gonna be really looking forward to buying it in the next couple of days.

^ Not to be picky or anything, but JGSLY wasn't Otto's debut single. He charted 3 singles off of his debut album in 2003, the highest being the highly underrated Days Of Our Lives (#33). Otto's success with JGSLY was very similar to Rodney Atkins' success with Going Thru Hell, the YE #1 from 2006.
As for your question about Shelton, I think it came in somewhere around #3 or #4 on the YE chart (B&D's "Ain't Nothin' 'Bout You was the YE-#1).

The label is testing "Green," "I'll Just Hold On," "This is Gonna Take All Night" and "I Don't Care." I'd bet on "Green" or "This Is Gonna Take All Night" as the likely next singles.

James Otto's first ever single was "The Ball."

They've listened to the cd and those are their 4 choices? Ugh. I Don't Care is an obvious single choice, but it makes no sense to release it 2nd. If you're trying to entice more people to buy the new album, releasing a song from the old album probably isn't the best way to accomplish that. Green and This Is Gonna Take All Night are decent songs, but are hardly single material IMO (I don't think either would make the T10). I'll Just Hold On is a good song, and I guess I wouldn't be too upset if it were released, but I still think that Here I Am, 100 Miles, and even Never Lovin' You make for better singles choices at the moment.

"Green" is my least favorite track on this excellent album, followed by "This Is Gonna Take All Night". I'm ok with ANY other song but these two.

no way that "Good At Startin' Fires" is not even being tested. Blake had said on a Sirius/XM radio interview that this song was the title track for the album and that it would definitely be a single at some point, and possibly even the next single.
but out of those choices it better be "I Don't Care". "Green" and "This Is Gonna Take All Night" are horrible songs.

www.countryweekly.com/blake_shelton/feature/1402CW What will be the next single? BS I don’t have a damn clue. (laughs) The good thing about it is that I think we’ve got about three obvious choices. It’s scary to me, because for the first time in my career I really feel like I have some real momentum going here. I’ve never had that. I’ve always been the guy that’s making a comeback every time. Right now I’m on top of that wave. I don’t know how I got here, but I don’t want to fall off, and this next single selection is probably going to be the most important decision I’ve made yet. That’s the pros and cons that I’m dealing with right now. It’s tough. You almost wish you could go into a coma and wake up three months later, after all the decision-making has happened, and see what the result was. It’s just agonizing. I’ll change my mind 50 times. I’ll change my mind the day the song goes to radio. I’ll just have a sick feeling, because I’m not that confident in my ability to pick hit singles. My record label, Warner Bros., has always been very good about letting me make whatever decision I want to make, and they get behind me 100 percent. But because of that, look at my career: “Austin” was this huge record, then my follow-up to it [“All Over Me”] was this huge failure. Then my follow-up to that was “Ol’ Red,” which was this huge song. It’s No. 1, No. 30, No. 8, No. 50, it’s this up-and-down pattern because I don’t really have a damn clue what I’m doing. (laughs) All I can do is pick my favorites. Sometimes my favorites are right in there with the masses and sometimes people are going, “What the hell was he thinking?” But I’ll tell you this, I think it’s kept people interested in me. This will sound stupid, but I think it’s made my career last as long as it has. Even though I’ve been in this for close to 10 years, I think a lot of people still think of me as one of the new guys because I’ve not been one of those over-the-top big breakout superstars. I’ve always been on the radar, and every once in a while I’ll have a big hit. It’s kept me in the game. I wouldn’t trade any of that, because I’ve learned a lot. And I love being the underdog, I really do.

Cool comments from Blake. It's interesting to hear an artist speak about their not-so-big career. I kind of have to agree with his reasoning as to how he's lasted so long. I really appreciate and respect the fact that he chooses his own singles and WB backs him up. As long as that's completely true, I think he's more than lucky because most artists don't have that power.

It looks like the revolving door at #1 will continue. Blake will hit #1 this week (he was on top of the RTT last night at midnight), but Dierks Bentley leads as of this morning. I have to admit that I'm surprised this song made it all the way. I thought for a little while that it would stall just below the top 10, or just barely scrape it, but Blake's had a few weeks of solid gains in a row.

Congrats to Blake on 2 #1s in a row. I hope this puts some fire under his becoming more visible as a hit maker. Can't wait to find out what the next single will be.

5 number one hits on Billboard now. That is quite a lot for someone that goes under the radar.

Shelton's chart history is kind of like Ty Herndon's in that Ty got a big hit, a lesser hit, and then a dud from pretty much all of his Epic albums. His first album had 1, 7, 21, 63 (!); second had 1, 21, 2, 17; third had 5, 1, 5 (no duds there, although I don't recall the #1 getting any airplay around here); fourth had 18, 26, 58. Then he ran smack into Heather's Wall.
It's nice to see Blake finally string two #1's together. Hopefully whatever comes next will also reach the single digits, and finally get his career on track. Pure BS came dangerously close to derailing him until the rerelease.

Thanks for correcting me regarding James Otto's debut single; I was corrected on this board a while back about Steve Holy, whose 'Good Morning Beautiful' replaced 'Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning?) at #1 seven years ago this week @ R&R, and stayed #1 for five weeks.
As was the case with Mr. Otto, I'd never heard of Mr. Holy until 'GMB' started soaring up the charts in Dec. of 2001, as I was under the impression that 'GMB' was his debut single, which wasn't the case.
Congratulations to Blake on back-to-back #1 singles; it's conceivable that he could become the format's next superstar, but we'll have to wait and see if that's the case.

So far in the new week, this song's gained more on MB than Dierks' song has, and it remains #1 on the RTT. Might not be able to hold Dierks off this weekend if it starts falling, but maybe it will manage a two-week run.

Thanks for the news of the next single. I am totally bummed by this. There are tons better songs on this CD. I just find this one really really boring and I really like Blake. I sure hope it grows on me some.

BOO! *throws tomato*
"Here I Am", "I Don't Care", and "Good At Startin' Fires" need to be singles! and i dont think he will go 5 singles deep. so that means one of my favorites will remain an album track :'(

"I Don't Care" is my favorite cut. I loved it on Pure BS and have to believe that the reason Blake put it on Startin' Fires is that he hopes to release it as a single. I think it is cleverly written and he does a great job on it.
It took a while for "She Wouldn't Be Gone" to grow on me. In fact, the first time I heard it on the radio I was channel surfing and about to change the channel for something familiar when I recognized Blake's voice. Now I like it and am very happy for Blake to have his fifth #1, especially since that makes two back-to-back.
I think Blake is incredibly talented. He has one of the best voices in country music. He just hasn't found whatever it is he needs to launch him to the next level.
