The only people I see on this board comparing it to pop tarts are the Shakira fans. This sounds nothing like a pop tart song to me. It doesn't even sound like something a female would typically do. It sounds like a female version of "Just Like Heaven". That’s because Shakira fans have very high expectations for Shakira. I love the song, but most fans expected more. I've noticed that casual fans seem to love the song, but hardcore fans seem to be the ones expecting more from Shaki. I think this was the safe choice for the first single. Its catchy and radio friendly.

I can never understand Shakira's lyrics anyway. It really doesn't matter what language she's singing in.. it still sounds the same to me. Exactly. I don't care about the lyrics cuz I can't understand her english so it doesn't matter. All I want to hear is a fresh song from Shakira with a hot video.

But, I dont condemn her for releasing an easy breezy more safe song to radio first. It will please the casual or even nonfans.

I like it but "How do you do" is much better IMO. Anyway the LS singles were better, she's the most successful when she sings latin songs (WW, LT, Objection). Just because the songs were upbeat doesnt make them latin. Those songs are a fusion of different rythms and it just happen that the singer/composer was latin. Once this song hits the street we will get used to Shakira singing a more rock/pop kind of music.

From the clip I heard, I really liked "Don't Bother".
Is this confirmed yet as the lead single?

I don't think it's "officially" confirmed, but it practically is.
I heard it's gonna start getting aired this week? Is that right?
I really like Don't Bother. I cannot wait to hear the full version.

Wow, that seems kind of late. Only a month away from the album debuting? Or is that about normal nowadays?

I would say that a month to a month and a half before the album debut is a normal time for the first single to go for adds, unless the plan is to release the second single right before or right after the album's release date.

I've been listening to it non-stop also, trying to like it better. I finally decided to just ignore the lyrics and listen to the music and I am liking the song a lot more. The song is really catchy. I think I'll like the final version of the song even more. I agree about not disliking a Shakira single. I can't do it.

It will let people see Shakira's rocker side. Its catchy and radio friendly. Besides, most people don't pay much attention to the lyrics of songs.

Surprisingly, I dont even think that this is that catchy...I can barely remember what it sounds like even after trying to listen to it repeatedly. I hope its wildly successful anyways just because I love her and I know the rest of the cd is bound to be a lot better.

After listening to both Don't Bother and How Do You Do quite a bit, I think How Do You Do would make a great 1st single. It sounds like a smash to me. Don't Bother on the other hand, is a total flop and should never be released. Just because she's copying The Cure is it good? No, not at all. HDYD sounds a lot more original to me.

How Do You Do is definitely much more original and unique. I hope it's the second single off the album. I don't think anyone is arguing that Don't Bother is paving any new ground. It's just a catchy pop/rock song.

Most nonfans and casual fans seem to either love or like "Don't Bother." Its only the hardcore fans that seem to not like the song, and that's only because they had very high expectations for Shakira. I also don't think its the best song Shakira has ever made, but I do still love the song. Its fun and catchy. I think radio will play this song and it will become a hit. Lots of people hated "La Tortura" when they barely heard it also. The lyrics to "How Do You Do" are too controversial for the song to be a single. Shakira - How Do You DoWhat language do you speak? If you speak at all? Are you some kind of freak Who lives to raise the ones who fall? Hey, would you tell me why The cat fights the dog? Do you go to the mosque or the synagog? And if our fates have all been wrapped around your fingers And if you wrote the script, then why the troublemakers? How do you do How does it feel to be so high and are you happy? Do you ever cry? I sometimes cryYou’ve made mistakes well that’s ok Cuz we all have, and if i forgive yours, would you forgive mine? Forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those who trespass against us Give us this day our daily bread Daily bread Daily bread Thine is the kingdom And the power And the glory Amen

I can understand not wanting to release How Do You Do as a first single, but I think she could release it further down the line. Outside the U.S. I don't think the song will be all that controversial and I agree that controversy isn't necessarily negative. Shakira hasn't had a problem with controversy before, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was released.

Why is it controversy? Because of the praying part? I don't understand why people making themselves love this song base on the LITTLE PART. You need to wait for the whole song to leak.

How Do You Do isn't controversial. People are deluding themselves if they think that's controversial.
I can't understand people slagging off Don't Bother!!! I think it's a really great song. I consider myself a hard core fan and I really really like what I've heard. It's cool and rocky and I'm sure radio will love it. It's a bit generic I s'pose, but we've had La Tortura and if you think of the Fixation albums as one then this is like the third single in a year which means Shakira is giving us a lot so there's no way anyone should be disappointed.

Releasing "How Do You Do" would be a gamble, those lyrics could backfire on Shakira. Couldn't disagree with you more. Remember "Octavo Dia"? That has got to be arguably the most controversial Latin single release of her generation, which also served as the political centerpiece of her Tour of the Mongoose, but it earned her a Grammy and won her even greater respect. Shakira didn't make it big because of her sex appeal; she made it big to begin with because of her songwriting talent. "Pies Descalzos" and "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?" are poetry, with controversial themes in a number of songs ranging from abortion to philosophy, and I think more of her international listeners are finally beginning to understand that. The song's going to do anything but backfire on her. Real fans would know by now she has always leaned liberally in her beliefs and has always been opinionated. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I really dont mind havind "How Do You Do ?" as the second single, I think releasing it later will give the whole album more longevity. As good as "Octavo Dia" was, it was not released as the first single of that album. Mariah will be remembered more by her second single "We Belong Together" than by her first comeback single "It's Like That" . Juanes third single "La Camisa Negra" has catapulted him to international fame. Gwen Stefani's third single "Hollaback Girl " was the one who made her album a sales hits. Most of these albums had a strong first single but the second or third singles made the album worthwhile.

How Do You Do isn't controversial though. It's a personal song where Shakira is questioning her own religion, not slagging religion off. It's really indirect as well, it's only obvious what it's about untill you really read the lyrics.
And I still can't help feeling that the prayer bits in How Do You Do sound a bit cheesy, like a bit over produced.
And How Do You Do, if it was released 2nd or 3rd wouldn't be the big hit because it's just as generic as Don't Bother except that it has some monks in it. La Camisa Negra and Hollaback Girl were really unique.
