i like this band but it disappoints me how songs make their way around Nashville. Its just as bogus as the pop industry (bigger acts getting offered songs first, smaller acts getting leftovers). :( oh well, its good for the songwriters

Pipi, nice to see your neagativity back. It's been a few weeks since I have been enlightened by your post.
I know that songs are written everyday in Nashville and 99% of them will never see the light of day. The good ones are recorded by an artist and there are many reasons why they don't put it on an album.
1. Not enough room. 2. Didn't like the way it flowed with the album. 3. Someone else asked the artist not to put it on an album so they can release it as a single. 4. etc.
Jimmy Wayne recorded this song. So what? It was never on any of his albums, nor was it released as a single by him. I have heard stories where songs were recorded by three or four artists before finding their way to the airwaves. I just don't get your rant.

^ of course you don't. because you are on some unknown defensive. I just dislike to see that any song was 'previously recorded by...' unless its an old cover version. Is it too much to ask that people write their own records? or at least get songs that have not been doing the rounds for months already?

I was waiting for this one to come up! I remember Jimmy singing a song called "Belongs To You" but I don't remember the song being familiar when I heard Emerson Drive do it for the first time. They have had this song in their setlist since March or April, I believe. It's a Dave Berg co-written song (as was "Moments")--- and its possible he tossed it over to them. I know someone mentioned before that Emerson Drive was one of those bands that got their songs taken by other artists and turned into hits, but they've only had two---both taken by Lonestar and both on the "Coming Home" CD. Richie McDonald had said they had listened to a bunch of CDs to find out what other producers were doing, so I'm pretty sure "What If" was in their collection. I think its a crappy thing to do, but in Lonestar's defense, Emerson Drive always said "Coming Home" was one of their favorites but never going to be a single. DreamWorks dropped them before "I'll Die Trying" became a single (it was supposed to be the second single, instead of "November" but they changed it at the last minute). And Lonestar did well with one and bombed with the other. As for "Belongs To You," I really hope this is the shot in the arm that Emerson Drive needs and the video looks great. It's going to be a long wait until both hit the air/video waves. It sounds great live-- just heard it last Friday. :) There's a video of most of the song on youtube--not that great of quality-- but you get the idea. I like how they give it more of an acoustic like flavor and I really like the keyboards too. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2xqDKN-fBw

Honestly this is an awesome song and it deserves to be recorded and released as a single. Emerson Drive write some songs but that isn't their strength while singing may not be some writers strength.
Dave Berg is the ASCAP Songwriter Of The Year!!! Getting another song written by him is a huge plus for its chances at radio because Dave Berg writes #1 hits!!!

George Strait, Tim McGraw are just a couple of the HUGE artist who don't write their own music. I feel that there are plenty of songwriters in Nashville. Not every artist has to wirte there own music to be successful. On top of that, there're dozens of songs that were album cuts for one artist before becoming a single for another. Mark Wills recorded "Somebody" and "What Hurts the Most" before they became #1's for Reba and Rascal Flatts, respectively. And plenty of acts have had success with multiple cover songs, such as The Kentucky Headhunters (who have covered Bill Monroe, Don Gibson, The Beatles, The Lovin' Spoonful, Norman Greenbaum…) Personally, I don't care if an artist writes their own material or not, nor do I care if someone records a cover. There are plenty of existing songs that I, as an aspiring singer, would like to cover for myself. Of course, if anyone's going to cover anything, it would be nicer to hear the new artist's own spin whenever possible, but I digress. And as pipi pointed out, you don't have to write a song to be a successful artist.

They should have nixed "You Still Own Me' and released "Countrified Soul," which I think might have had a better shot. That was a Brad Mates co-write. Canadian radio has more of those Emerson Drive written singles. We haven't had any in the states as of yet.
There are a couple of singles that Brad Mates and Danick Dupelle co-wrote---maybe even more on the actual CD, but I do know they have two in the current show lineup---that probably wouldn't do well at radio, but both are good live songs.

I'm just curious, how are they getting around the death of their bass player in concert? Do just they do their concerts sans bass, or has Brad learned to play bass, or what?

A little late to the discussion of recording a song someone else has recorded but I have no problem with it. If it's a good song, I say go for it. If someone can get Chalee Tennison's I Can Feel You Drifting on the radio, I'd be elated. There are a ton of hits that would not have been hits if the artists avoided them because a lesser known artist recorded them.

She had tons of songs I thought were good for radio. I still have yet to hear this ED song though but I'm wanting to from the ad I have seen on Aircheck.

This is good but it didn't jump out at me like Moments did and like I was expecting.

Thanks for the link. I checked AAC yesterday and there was nothing as of yet.
Oh wow-- this is NOTHING like their live version. Wow--- its very pretty and I LOVE the keyboards-- but has a huge production. I hope this doesn't bite them...and leave it to Brad to change up the lyrics, lol.
Arlo Gilliam is the "back-up" bassist for Emerson Drive, and yes, he did play on the new CD and no, he's not an "official" member. He's from Tennessee. I don't think Brad can play bass but keyboardist Dale Wallace can. Brad does play guitar a couple times in concert though.

I believe he passed away a month or so after leaving the band. I think his official last day as a member of the band was July 30th. That was when they held their #1 party for "Moments" and he died on September 26th.

Emerson Drive - " Belongs To You" NOTE: I knew this song sounded familiar Jimmy Wayne (Valory Music Co.) actually recorded this song in the past and had it on his myspace for a bit. Listen to Jimmy's Version www.youtube.com/watch?v=4t5f_K7EeXgOoh, I like this version a LOT! And there's a little lyric change from Emerson Drive's version too-- so that's nice. I wish I had a copy of this version too! :) It's too bad he didn't put it on his CD. The song is just great no matter who sings it and I love Jimmy's music as much as I do Emerson Drive's.

Wow, this isn't what I was expecting at all. The production is awful, but aside from that I like it. It doesn't sound like a ED song with that watered down production. This is neck and neck with Moments for my least favorite ED single yet (so maybe it's a good sign that I don't love it), but I'm still really looking forward to their new cd.

I've liked all of ED's singles thus far, Moments is just my least favorite. I've loved 6 of their singles, and liked the other 2 (Only God and Moments). That's why I'm really looking forward to their new cd.

It might be a little too produced for some but I love the soaring production in the song. I think if any top country artist did this it would be top 5 guaranteed. It will be interesting to see if it can go top 5 for Emerson Drive. It must go top 10 though if they are ever going to have a chance to break out and make a bigger name for themselves.

I just don't find it as distinctive as their past music. It sounds like something any other country act would do. Lyrically I think it's plenty strong, and I don't think the production is going to hurt its success , so I'm expecting this to do well

I hope you are right. They really need to do well. Guess only time will tell. The video looks to be good though.
Its kind of a let down for the "diehard" E-drive fans anyway. They do a much stripped down version in concert--to where it's almost acoustic, but I guess they are doing a more "full band" version now. I loved "Only God" but this is the single where Emerson Drive started to struggle at radio, so I hope "Belongs" doesn't have the same result.
And its official radio date is also the same day as the new Urban and Strait singles, so I don't see this one having huge add numbers if radio only has so many slots to add new stuff. This might be a wait and see game.

Oh man, leave it to Brad...scary interview. But yeah, that is what it's like to interview Brad Mates...he keeps you on your toes. The video debuts on Yahoo! Music on November 11th. Brad did post on their myspace page --- www.myspace.com/emersondrive and mentioned the song went to radio today and they did post the song to their myspace page as well. They must have done their photo shoot the same day as their video shoot.
