Wow, this sounds good. Kenny's voice still sounds flatter than Kansas, but it's less obvious since he's singing it softly. I honestly didn't think that his version would be even mellower than Mac's original.

In its four weeks on the chart, "Down The Road" has yet to achieve the most increased audience distinction (first week on was as an album cut, then got beat out by Keith, Toby, and George). However, that will end this week when it gains about 4 million AIs.

This the first Kenny Chesney song that I like in a very long time. Good stuff.

I agree. This is Kenny's best single in quite a while. However, I was a fan of "Better as a Memory."

I do like this song but I still can't get over how Kenny sings 'road'.

I still prefer Restless Heart's version of this song. :)

However, that will end this week when it gains about 4 million AIs. Umm...yeah, about that. Country *** No. 1 *** #1 Zac Brown Band Chicken Fried (Atlantic/Home Grown/Big Picture) Most Increased Audience #2 Tim McGraw Let It Go (Curb)Breaker #24 George Strait River Of Love (MCA Nashville) Breaker #33 Martina McBride Ride (RCA) Breaker #36 Joey + Rory Cheater Cheater (Vanguard/Sugar Hill/Nine North) Breaker #39 Lost Trailers How 'Bout You Don't (BNA) Re-Entry #47 Melissa Lawson What If It All Goes Right (Warner Bros./WRN) Debut #51 Jason Aldean She's Country (Broken Bow) Re-Entry #58 Adam Gregory What It Takes (Midas/Big Machine) Debut #60 Jason Michael Carroll Where I'm From (Arista Nashville) Guess I spoke too soon even though "Down The Road" was most increased on the Real Time Tracker nearly all of last week. Edit: I'm guessing the Real Time Tracker didn't take the panel changes into account?

Just to make it more confusing -- the R&R email I get Monday nights (which lists the top 5 for the previous week with audience totals, plus the greatest gainer) gives Kenny and Mac the nod at 4 mill. And the RTT at 11:30 last night had Keith Urban as GG with a little over 4 mill. Headaches for all of us.
I couldn't resist giving you a little more inconsistent data to puzzle over. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas! I still read your posts on occasion, and am glad to see them.

I'm no stranger than I ever was. Hey to you as well. And I enjoyed your comment elsewhere on Wichita -- by the way, that's a terrific song as was the second one (Think Like a Woman) on the Chesnutt MySpace.

It looks like Kenny put a little distance between himself and Toby/Keith/Brooks & Dunn this week. They're still all pretty tight, but I think Kenny will be the first from the group to hit #1, maybe in another 4 weeks?

Looks like he's only a week or two at the most from another #1 single.

Looks like he's only a week or two at the most from another #1 single. I think it would be interesting if this got Top 40 on the Hot 100, nearly 30 years after his last Top 40 pop hit. Would that be the longest gap between first and second Top 40 pop hit?

^ what was the last pop hit? He had "It's a Crazy World" and "Minimum Love" in 1977 and 1983 respectively. If "Down the Road" gets Top 40, that'll be 22 years between first and second Top 40 pop hit, as Minimum Love fell one space short.

Thanks...oh so what are the #1 odds on this now? it looks like toby passed him on mediabase 24/7...but lately it seems like everybody gets a week or 2 at the top. and then they're outta there...

Yeah, that's what I just said, those two singles were Mac's only Hot 100 entries until this song.

I would love this song to get #1 so Mac could get a #1 as an artist.

I would love this song to get #1 so Mac could get a #1 as an artist. Down the Road led Toby's song by half a mill through Thursday's Billboard tabulation. I don't see any way it can miss #1 this coming week. Mac will get his #1. Flushed with success, he'll then talk Nanci Griffith into releasing their duet on Gulf Coast Highway and take that to #1 as well.... Unstoppable.

Yeah there's no stopping Mac now. If he plays his cards right, he and Nanci will debut at #1 just like Garth.
With "Down The Road" hitting #1 this week, Kenny collects his 16th #1 single. Even though he has all those #2s (10 to be exact)*, 8 of his last 10 singles (not counting "Every Other Weekend") have hit #1, so he's making up lost ground in the race to collect the most #1s from this generation.
* edited to fix a stat error

I am quite surprised Kenny has not released a GH Vol. 2, by the time they do they are going t o have to leave off quite a few tracks...

Since Kenny and his #2 songs is an issue I've been closely following over the last several years, in his pursuit of catching Eddy Arnold and Conway Twitty with the most ever (12), I had to check on that one aspect of your post. I have Kenny with ten #2-peaking songs on Billboard: Me And You When I Close My Eyes That's Why I'm Here Young Big Star No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problems I Go Back The Woman With You Who You'd Be Today Shiftwork When you were quoting that "eight #2" total, were you not only counting Billboard, that two of these ten songs might have made it to #1 on one of the other major charts, and thus wasn't included on your list of eight? Just wondering...

I've heard that Kenny himself is quite strongly against releasing hits packages, so that's why there hasn't been another one. I don't remember the source offhand, but it was a quite awhile ago that I heard that. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised to see one come soon.

Just wondering... Nope, sorry just a mistake on my part. For some reason I hadn't added in his most recent #2s, even though I didn't count them as #1s either. Just an error on my part, I agree that he's had 10 #2s. I'll edit that earlier post now.

Looking forward to Toby Keith's God Love Her surging to the top next week, Toby claiming his 44th career Billboard #1, and thus passing George Strait's total!!!!
