A rather obvious choice, as there weren't that many single possibilities on the album. And it definitely ranks in the bottom third of the songs on the album, in the order of which I like the most. Kind of boring.
It should peak a little better than Troubadour's #7, at least top five. Outside chance at #3, if the competition isn't too fierce, and if it's able to strike a chord. If it debuts on the 11/29 chart, that would have it in its 14th week on the chart when the 2/28/09 chart is released, which comes out the Monday after Valentine's Day weekend. It might catch on as one of the radio-favorite love songs during that month, as it should be peaking at about the right time.
At the very least, say hello to top ten number 80, and soon to be a cool dozen behind Eddy Arnold's all-time leading total.

Yeah, not a very surprising release, although I was still hoping for something better. I actually think that George sounds pretty good on this - the style fits his voice surprisingly well, but it's still just a mediocre song. The lyrics are awkward at times and seem a little childish for someone of George's age and stature, but I guess MCA is hoping this gets a younger audience to go buy Troubadour. Should make the T10, but I don't know about the T5.

Also hope that he performs this at the CMAs, rather than the already-recurrent Troubadour. It always irks me when the artists I like play their past singles, rather than the current one, as it's a prime opportunity to get a lot of exposure. With River being a lot more uptempo than Troub, I would think the CMA producers would be hoping for the new single as well.

Ugh. Those lyrics don't look so good. Do we really need the hook FOUR times in the chorus, then 187 more times at the end? Is someone figuring that taking the same approach as a HeadOn commercial will work in a song? This is the second time in his career that George has put out two not-so-good songs in a row (the last time being "Cowboys Like Us" and "Desperately").
Of course, no matter what he sings at the CMA's, he's going to sound sick half the time, like he ALWAYS does at the award shows.

Wow. Calling "Desperately" and especially "Cowboys Like Us" "not-so-good" songs.... Maybe I'm thinking of two different songs with the same title?!

Those are my two favorite Strait singles of the past decade. I've said it before. "Cowboys Like Us" felt contrived ("Steel horses with wheels"?) and the production is just meh. Also, why write a song about motorcycles and set it at a slow pace? Heck, I didn't even know it was about motorcycles until I read that in Country Weekly. "Desperately" was just plain mediocre, nothing special in the lyrics (your adverbs are backed up into your chorus!) or production, but it at least had a slightly different melody, I'll give it that. Plus, it just bugged me that they were trying to use something as uninspired as "I still love you desperately" as a hook.

For all its worth , I never cared for Desperately much but Cowboys Like Us did grow on me after awhile. Though I didn't realize it was about motorcycles either til deep in its chart life. I still stand by remark in the other thread. I think were about to see Mr. Straits first real bomb in about a decade. And to be honest...I kinda hope it does.

The song is not one of my favorites from the album... However its certainly no worse then Alan's Good Time or a few other songs I could name that even went to number one. I do think radio will play this a heck of a lot more then it would say. House With No Doors or Brothers of the Highway. Both of which I would have been very happy with.

Ah well, all writers can't mach the maturity and depth of a Taylor Swift or can all singers reach her incredible range.... Cough.. I'm not saying King George is perfect (and Taylor sure as hell isn't). I don't mind that he's put out a couple mediocre songs; his track record is insanely good considering how many songs he's put out. Besides the highly overrated "I Cross My Heart" and a couple not so good mid-1990s songs ("I Know She Still Loves Me", "The Man in Love with You", etc.) there isn't much of his that I don't care for. I think were about to see Mr. Straits first real bomb in about a decade. And to be honest...I kinda hope it does. So you're saying this will bomb at #24ish á la "Lovesick Blues"? (Why did that cover fail so miserably anyway? Too old-school? Lack of promotion due to Pure Country?)

I remember reading a comment that radio complained that he "yodeled" in it... Heaven forbid... Imagine the nerve of of sending a yodeling song to Country radio. Whatever was he thinking.......... I loved the song. But then I loved King of the Mountain too and that didn't break at records with radio either.

I think the label may have pulled the rug out from under it actually. It wasnt burning up the charts by anymeans ,but it seems like it was kind of a throw away single til the 1st single from Pure Country was ready.

And I hope the state of country music isn't to the point where we should tolerate songs because they're not as bad as other songs. So does anyone know who wrote this lyrical masterpiece? I'm trying to update the first post but I can't find this info.

I think the reason for Lovesick Blues not getting a warm reception was a combination of the yodeling and the fact that the song was 40 years old. It was just too different for radio folks. It really had nothing to do with Pure Country, as George had another album, Holding My Own, between Lovesick and Pure Country.
I agree with a lot of the sentiments expressed here, that this new song is not one of George's best. There are several others on the album that I think would have been a breath of fresh air. He's my favorite singer, but I haven't liked a lot of his singles this decade. As always, I'm just one man with one opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Sorry. I wasn't referring to fans accepting bad songs so much as radio playing or accepting "not so good songs "... ... There seems to be a big difference between what fans want or believe is a good song and what radio pushes on us.

I knew this would be the 3rd single (since the sticker on my Troubador cd says so ) but I really dont love this song. I love old fashioned straight up country but this does not do it for me. Its just lacking for some reason. :(

I don't like this one at all. Maybe it will grow on me, but I agree that it does seem very childish. I wouldn't be surprised if this one missed the top 10.

He's only missed the top ten three times in the past seven years IIRC (Don't Make Me Come Over There And Love You/Seashores Of Old Mexico/Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa), so I'd expect this to breeze into the top ten rather easily, based on his track record.
Kenny Chesney & Keith Urban are well ahead of him, and the current top ten is jammed with format stars and/megastars, so this definitely has clear sailing into the top ten.

Right on the money. Of course, this could end up zooming then freefalling, not unlike "Meanwhile" but not quite as extremely. Whatever happens, I don't think we'll ever see another chart run like "King of the Mountain": 38-27-26-25-24-19-22-24-35 . Just how did THAT one die such a quick death anyway?

If you'd refresh my memory and tell me when 'KOTM' hit radio, as well as the single it followed and the single which followed it, I'll take a shot at answering your question.
I can't even recall which CD it was on---yikes!

I can't even recall which CD it was on---yikes! "King of the Mountain" came between "I Can Still Make Cheyenne" and "One Night at a Time", as the fourth single from Blue Clear Sky. I can't imagine it having been pulled, as he'd had several albums go four deep before. Maybe it was a case similar to "Rock You Baby"/"Beer for My Horses"? For the record, George seems to get really weird recurrent play around here. Most of his #1's are shunned except for "Love Without End, Amen", "Heartland", "Check Yes or No", "Carrying Your Love with Me" and "Give It Away", and yet most of his recent non-#1's seem to stay in recurrent rotation longer. I know I heard "You'll Be There" a lot when "The Seashores of Old Mexico" was current, and heard that song a lot when "It Just Comes Natural" was current.

It's interesting to hear about George's airplay in other cities.
One country station here guarantees a George song every hour (remember, San Antonio is basically his hometown). The other country station just plays him every hour, without verbally saying the guarantee.
So I'm used to hearing a wide variety of George songs. It's nice to see what the other country stations are playing.

This one still hasn't grown on me. As a matter of fact, I find it almost "cheesey" (for lack of better words).
On a more comical note, does anyone else think he practically says "b-tch" when he's actually saying "beach" in the third verse? :)
