Part of what makes a band special is whether I'm intrigued enough by them to listen to an entire album. With their groundbreaking sound, MGMT certainly fell under this category of artist. Their most recent CD, Oracular Spectacular, spurred an electro-dance sound with elements of Pink Floyd and other '70s or early '80s rock sounds. Simply defined, this is what an alternative band, ultimately, should strive to be. Constantly pushing the boundaries. Uncompromising. "Time To Pretend" was a quirky hit for this duo, but the entire album is probably quirkier. The bands may sound nothing alike, but for some reason this album reminded me of recent CD's from Seattle group My Morning Jacket. Also, its "space rock" sound - as Rolling Stone once defined it, sort of reminds me of Make Yourself, Incubus' commercial breakthrough and 1999 release. It truly stands in a category by itself, though, despite its obvious influences. As mentioned above, Pink Floyd come to mind. Oracular Spectacular featured only one prominent hit on the jdmasta289 chart, but "Electric Feel" and "Kids" dented the top 30, respectively. Look for a fourth "single" to reach the top 20 or higher in 2009. Oracular Spectacular is the Album of the Year for 2008.

***These members have been eliminated from winning first place in this contest, as of *before* scoring for this batch took place***
oscillations Innocent crve105 fran.185 (can still tie first place) Cody (can still tie first place)
Second and third place wins are still up in the air! This batch is much more difficult. 20. The first single from this 2006 emo-punk breakthrough is an oxymoron in and of itself.Panic At The Disco - Nine In The Afternoon (P(A)=0) 19. This first single comes from a band that formed out of the ashes of a 1990s/2000s progressive rock quartet (which, technically, is still intact).Ashes Divide - The Stone (PHOBIA) 18. Certain examples of this song title are pet rocks, Rubix cubes, and disco. It's a third single from a 2000s trio.Chevelle - The Fad (P(A)=0) 17. The lead singer of this band doesn't need this important element (the song title) in a completely fuel-efficient mode of transportation.Flobots - Handlebars (P(A)=0) 16. Work violations in China spurred this successful first single.Rise Against - Re-Education (P(A)=0) 15. Mentions of "December" and "snow" in this first single remind me of winter, and cold weather.Coldplay - Violet Hill (fran.182) 14. This song was rumored to plagiarize the 2004 song "If I Could Fly" by guitarist Joe Satriani. It was a massive Alternative and semi-massive CHR/Pop hit. (Listen to the chorus of the song for a hint!)Coldplay - Viva La Vida (P(A)=0) 13. The two singles from this emo-punk band's previous album did virtually nothing, commercially. However, this song peaked at #24 (or so) on Mediabase Alternative this fall. The band name is the name of a beanstalk-grower holding a plastic figure commonly found in clothing stores.Jack's Mannequin - The Resolution (fran.182) 12. The second single from my Breakthrough Artist of 2008's most recent album.Band Of Horses - No One's Gonna Love You (P(A)=0) 11. A type of shark shares the same name as this first single.Offspring - Hammerhead (P(A)=0) ScoreboardPHOBIA - 26 P(A)=0 - 16 Made of Steel - 13 Matt4319 - 9 fran.182 - 7 halo19 - 7 Cody - 5 crve105 - 4 Innocent - 2 oscillations - 1
