Maybe it's because this album is horrible (apart from GBS and ITDWYLD) compared to their previous effort, imo. Horrible is a stretch for me. Not the direction I would've liked to see them go, but not horrible by any means.

Not the direction I would've liked to see them go, but not horrible by any means. I actually think "Dark Horse", while a weaker album lyrically than "All The Right Reasons", is nonetheless stronger musically than "All The Right Reasons" in that there are solos on three tracks, more meat to the heavier-sounding songs production-wise and you can sense them beginning to unravel their Country aspirations on "This Afternoon". Thus, I think "Dark Horse" is neither better, nor worse, than "All The Right Reasons", and while neither are by any stretch of the imagination great albums, I nonetheless like them. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

So they have a song called "Something In Your Mouth" and then another song called "I'd Come For You" that has a video directed by Nigel Dick? Something tells me these guys need to get laid. I'll have to check this out though. I liked Gotta Be Somebody and Something in Your Mouth.

They seem to revolve around 1 or 2 subjects and it seems kind of sophomoric. Oh well.

This video will certainly shift the general interpretation of the song, into not solely being an agape type of love song, but more a song about sentimental bonds between family members and loved ones. Makes the song have more of a saudade feel to it as well. This video will definitely be an asset for the single. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Probably the best story they've come up with for one of their videos. Usually their "storyline" videos kinda suck.

Wow, great video. This is destined to be a HUGE hit. Provided that this sound can still hold up on pop radio. It does sound awfully similar to some of their others, but that hasn't stopped them before.

All Access added "If Today Was Your Last Day," and it goes for Hot AC adds on March 17. So I'd assume this will be the third single.

Yeah I was wonderin about the fact that all the hype around this track just involves a video shoot (i. e. no adds date on any format)...IMO If Today Was Your Last Day and Never Gonna Be Alone both seem like much stronger picks than this (plus seems like the whole idea for the hook might've been taken from Matt Nathanson cause his CDs been out for over a year now)

Well "Id Come For You" has a March 23rd release date for the UK. They dont have a video done for ITWYLD so releasing that next in the US seems wierd.

"If Today Was Your Last Day" is currently climbing the charts here in Canada thanks to massive radio airplay. I'm thinking that the US will follow up with this single sometime next month, which by that time, they'll shoot a video to go with the release, as "Gotta Be Somebody" will have phased out. In that case, it would appear more that "I'd Come For You" would be released in the UK first before North America.

They released "Far Away" in the UK first. Not sure if I like the different singles in different countries but I guess its done no harm in the past.

I just hope they also have planned a follow-up for "Something In Your Mouth" on Active Rock, regardless of what the next intended mainstream single will be.
They should launch "Just To Get High" there next, followed by another one of their raunchy rockers.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Yeah, what Noah said. Exactly. Because I think they run a risk of releasing too many consecutive tracks of the same topical vein (in this case sex) and generating moderate burnout among listeners in result. I think "Shakin' Hands" is more catchy than "Just To Get High" actually, but it would be wise they release the latter first, THEN something like "Shakin' Hands" to make themselves sound fresh topically to listeners. Then, if the album demonstrates longevity like that of "All The Right Reasons", "Burn It To The Ground" would be a great final release to push on Active Rock, since it's not specifically about sex but rather about late-night drinking and extreme behavior. One could also argue "Burn It To The Ground" should be released next on that premise, but I think the tone/mood of each release is important to consider too. "Something In Your Mouth" is downright mischievous, while "Just To Get High" provides a deeply serious contrast. Then "Shakin' Hands" returns to utmost silliness, and "Burn It To The Ground", while a decidedly upbeat track, also sounds serious in some respects, in how Kroeger sings the chorus with the "Yeah!" chorus complementing him. I really think "Next Go Round" is the ONLY track on "Dark Horse" that doesn't sound like a single. "S.E.X." sounds somewhat like one, but I also think it sounds too nostalgic of 80's hair metal like Def Leppard to be a smash now. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Anyone else think that "Just To Get High" has a shot at the Top 40/HAC?
Personally, I'd love "Burn It To The Ground" as the 2nd single on Rock.
As for the Top 40 ballads IMO it's like this: ITWYLD < ICFY <NGBA

As for the Top 40 ballads IMO it's like this: ITWYLD < ICFY <NGBA I think "Shakin' Hands" is the rock song most likely to cross over onto Top 40, because it taps into a familiar thematic vein as "Rockstar" essentially. I think "Just To Get High" will be a smash on Active Rock, but I see minimal crossover potential in that track. Primarily because the production of the track sounds too much of a throwback to 80's Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, and they'd certainly have to cut out the solo in a radio edit, which I find the standout moment in the song. "Shakin' Hands", to be fair, also has a sort of throwback sound to it, but not in a way where it permeates the entirety of it. The guitar crunches are still unmistakably Nickelback as we know them, and lyrically it'll click to those who loved "Rockstar" too. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

Interesting thoughts about Shakin' Hands! I actually would love it if it can cross over. That song cracks me up. I do think though that among all the songs, it's "This Afternoon" that screams "Rockstar" to me from this era. I think if they try it can even get some Country airplay. It's like "All Summer Long" meets "Rockstar".
