How come this is doing so well in the US when its mostly flopped everywhere else? That's not entirely accurate. It performed about the same in Canada, Australia, Ireland, and NZ as it has in the states. Unfortunately though, Capitol hasn't backed it up financially the way it did with her first two singles. I really think it could have reached the top ten in another 20 countries but by their logic, WUIV won't make much of a difference in her album sales at this point and that's why they're not pushing it nearly as hard.

^And maybe because the whole song has a very American theme? I mean, I doubt a song about Hanging Out in Liverpool would do too well in the US, either.

Maybe it didn't do well worldwide bc the song is about an American city?? I mean get real. Would American radio play a song here called "Waking Up in Tokyo"?

Yeah, the fact that it's called Waking Up In Vegas should make it totally obvious to everyone why this wasn't a worldwide smash ala IKAG and HNC.

Most of the world knows Vegas. Especially those who already like Katy Perry.
No, the reason this song did poorly worldwide is because it's not catchy enough.

They may have heard of it, but I doubt they relate to it or really know it. I just think it has a theme that only Americans would really relate to. If it wasn't catchy enough to be a hit I don't know why it would be #1 on CHR. Payola definitely wouldn't have taken it that far.

A few hits I could name of the top of my head Leaving Las Vegas - Sheryl Crow Fairytale of New York - Pogues Galveston - Glen Campbell I Left My Heart in San Francisco - Tony Bennett Philadelphia Freedom - Elton John Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen Viva Las Vegas - Elvis Presley Walking in Memphis - Marc Cohen

i dont think vegas is the reason.this song is catchy but i think hot n cold is 100 percent catchy.i kissed a girl is catchy but i guess this song does not have the lyrics that people want to sing along.

I still think the theme of this song is something that would go over the heads of a lot of people outside the U.S. Also it's not like this song was a complete bomb outside of the U.S., it still fared decently. Just not on the level of her first 2 singles.

On the reverse side, Jennifer Hudsons "Spotlight" single was a big hit in Europe and it went largely unnoticed on CHR in the US.
Its a bit weird and just shows that its radio programmers who decide what is going to be a hit.

Only a -21 on BEP, 'cause they had a <100 update! With two more of these, Katy should be well and truly safe!

Just not on the level of her first 2 singles. I think the vegas theme is pretty well known everywhere so it's not theme related. I honestly think this song only reached this level of success in USA because of American Idol... Just Like Pocket Full of Sunshine. Because fo the strong dl (and people really linking it) radio was unable to ignore it... I think both this and natasha's song could've been ignored and peaking in the 30's without much dls and people knowing about it. Did I make sense? I thought I did when I started the post

Ok, I don't think I understand the charts....
Isn't this officially #1 on the "Pop Songs" chart already?

Yeah, but on the Mediabase Charts, the official update is the Sunday night update. If WUIV is able to be #1 during that update, then it's going to be an official #1.

I see. So what's the difference from the media base charts and the Pop songs chart?

And who, btw, says the sunday chart is the one that counts? Mediabase is a rolling chart, right? And do they even keep a record of peaks and all that themselves? If not, how can one day's chart be considered more official than the next?
I've been following mediabase for a long time, but I've never really seen any official indication of this "sunday only counts" rule. Sunday's is the chart that other companies use to make their weekly charts and countdowns, but that to me doesn't make a tuesday peak any less official for mediabase.
