Why would we even need a pop/rhythmic station? Why can't we have pop stations and rhythmic stations like we have pop stations and country stations? If you feel like rhythmic, turn to one of the bazillion rhythmic stations. If this station winds up being monitored, and it succeeds, it'll further screw up an already screwed up CHR chart Yeah just can't see any reason not to classify this station as Rhythmic (if Rhythmic stations are ignoring Britney and Lady GaGa, IMO that's a prob. with Rhythmic stations that I guess should be classified as Urban) - if station isn't even playin Kelly Clarkson and Love Story, and its listeners don't like the Fray just cause they don't have a dance beat, how could it possibly be considered CHR? Just wonderin...

Not playing Kelly Clarkson seems like an attempt to differentiate themselves from Z100

Seems like Z100 has already turned more rhythmic in response to 92.3.
I notice "Halo", "The Climb" and "I Will Be" have pretty much been dropped by Z100 already (they're only planning those songs maybe 0x-2x per day instead of 5x-7x)! Meanwhile, they're bumping up spins for more rhythmic songs like "Boom Boom Pow", "Blame It" and "Beautiful". This is what I dreaded!!

I don't know if it's just me, but doesn't the altered pitch drive anyone else crazy? It just makes me feel uneasy.

It's out of the top 50 now I think or close. I think the CHR chart is just kind of rhythmic-leaning in general right now, but the more-or-less dropping of Halo and The Climb is pretty worrysome considering even KIIS is still playing those songs

I think leaning rhythmic would be an extremely bad move for z100. A large portion of their audience seems to be tweens and if they refuse to play the teen pop they've played in the past that appeals to them they'll lose a big part of their audience. They've done well with the "all pop" format so I hope they don't decide to turn into another KIIS.

^Yeah no doubt they'll keep the teen pop...but not sure about the Alternative/Hot AC-leaning stuff (esp. new untested songs) - if they drop 'em (or lower their rotation), IMO PLJ's gonna pick up a lot of listeners

What I don't like about Now 92 is that I feel they don't have enough songs in rotation, and I keep hearing the same songs over and over and over again. They could also use a few more recurrents in their mix.

Yeah same philosophy as "Now Indianapolis radio" (WNOU I think) when it came out in late '99 (I think)...was afraid the "now" slogan meant songs from right now (no recurrents) - the thinkin was (in Indianapolis) that teens listen to the radio infrequently, but when they do they wanna hear their fav. song...def. not designed for people who wanna listen for extended periods of time...

CHR/Pop has been a 'rhythmic-leaning' format for several years and for large swaths of the past twenty years, so being surprised makes no sense whatsoever.
I don't expect Z100 to load up on rhythmic stuff either; that strategy is working for KIIS very well, even if the station is unlistenable to many of us.
You couldn't get away from Usher, Nelly, JLo, Eminem and tons of others at top 40 radio in the early part of this decade as the format cranked up pursuing teens & young females at the expense of adults who had started bailing from top 40 radio by the millions starting in the late eighties.
Fast forward to 2008/09 and you've got Kanye West, Akon, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Flo Rida and others who have the same stranglehold on top 40 playlists and those 12-17 and 18-24 year olds that those other artists did.
Country, Hot AC, Smooth Jazz & other formats were only too happy to snag those adults.
Look at the year-end charts and notice the dominance of rap & rhythmic material over the past several years, another dead giveaway.
Check out also the very high percentage of hard-core rap/rhythmic songs which have breezed to the top of the charts at CHR/Pop, CHR/Rhythmic & Urban stations throughout this decade as top 40 radio continued its obssession with the 18-24 and 18-34 demos and females in particular, that CHR/Rhythmic & certainly Urban stations have been fixated on since Britney Spears was in kindergarten.
You can start with that stupendous 25.0+ share for women 18-34 at Green Bay's WXSS as Kevin Carter points out in the newest issue of R&R as proof of top 40's addiction to that demo
I hope that CBS's Dan Mason has lots of patience in challenging WHTZ & KIIS; he's going to need it a lot!!!!!

I get Flo Rida in your example... but I wouldn't say that Rihanna is pure Urban or HipHop. In fact, Don't Stop the Music and Disturbia are Dance songs more than anything else, Shut Up and Drive was purely pop, SOS the same, and even Umbrella except for Jay-Z didn't have much of Urban IMO. Chris Brown had 2 Pop songs last year: No Air and Forever. Kanye is a bit of a rare bug. Love Lockdown was not entirely Urban, the dance remix helped a lot in Z100 and even in Hot99.

Actually read somewhere (awhile back, and think it still holds true) that year-end charts tend to be more Rhythmic cause January and February tend to have a lot of Rhythmic releases whereas more big pop/rock hits tend to come out in the summer (sure this isn't always true, but guess it tends to be the pattern)

This station is seriously pathetic. Everytime I turn it on I hear the same songs - either a Britney song, Poker Face, Right Round, So What, or Let it Rock. and the other day I was in the car with other people and I had it on and everyone commented on how badly sped-up the songs sounded. Also, they always seem to play a song that *just* played on z100. There's really no reason to listen to this station, they need to step it up if they wanna stick around.

I hope this helium effect stops when they're done with the 10,000 songs in a row. Things like this can drive people with perfect pitch crazy.

As far as big Rhythmic tracks racing up the CHR chart, that's in a large part cause stations that don't play the track get classified as Hot AC - whereas stations that don't play big pop/rock tracks are somehow allowed to stay classified as CHR Also WXSS/Green Bay is competin with WIXX (prob. the most Alternative/Rock-leaning CHR in the country), so it's def. gonna go after the younger teen/rhythmic demo

I didn't know that about WXSS---thanks.
A station in nearby Appleton, Wisc. & KMVQ/San Francisco have now been added to the Mediabase top 40 panel, FWIW.
Now 92.3 is not going to sound like a bread-and-butter top 40 station until the 10,000 song marathon concludes; they're merely trying to call attention to the station's launch by building cume in anyway possible, and KKHH/Houston did the same thing when it was launched.

^Yeah this classification of rhythmics as CHR is kinda startin to become ridiculous IMO...KMVQ/San Francisco is completely rhythmic (except for Gives You Hell by AAR), and it plays tons of gold singles like P. Y. T. by Michael Jackson - playin really old recurrents/gold is the critera the trade papers use to classify stations like WWMX and WKRQ as Hot AC instead of CHR, but for some reason now it's okay to play lots of recurrents/gold (and still be CHR) as long as they're rhythmic recurrents
Kinda givin up here lol...if everyone wants rhythmic to be CHR and CHR to be Hot AC, guess there's nothin anyone can do about it - and IMO no one should be surprised at a rhythmic-leaning CHR chart (especially after the new stations in NYC and LA start gettin monitored)

the other day I was in the car with other people and I had it on and everyone commented on how badly sped-up the songs sounded. My CHR station does that too with their songs. My station speeds up 'MLWSWY' and 'Circus' so much, that Kelly and Brit sound like chipmunks.

Yeah, that's how Now plays them. z100 doesn't speed their songs up at all so it's extremely weird to listen to them at normal speed on z100 and then turn on Now and hear them super sped-up.

How is this doing with ratings? Terrible, hopefully. :) I'm with Atlantaboy. All these rhythmic stations masquerading as Pop stations is getting ridiculous. They can all drop off the face of the Earth for all I care.

the next ratings dont come out for a about another month & even then it takes awhile for a new station to really impact.
