Well, it's comin'... www.people.com/people/article/0,,20266265,00.html A career-spanning Madonna greatest hits (which is what it best be) is an event, and should be treated like Beatles' 1, Elvis' 30 #1 Hits, etc. And great news that she plans to record new tracks. In this digital age, a GH album won't be a blockbuster. But if handled properly, this could see decent success. But, will it be a single- or double-disc release? (The Hard Candy era is over, though maybe Sticky & Sweet items could be posted in that older thread) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Madonna's Greatest Hits Album to Include New Songs By K.C. Baker Originally posted Tuesday March 17, 2009 05:35 PM EDT Calling all Madonna fans! The Queen of Pop is coming out with a long-awaited greatest hits collection this fall. 'We're hoping to have a greatest hits package come out in September," the singer's longtime publicist, Liz Rosenberg, tells PEOPLE. "We're all very excited about it." With so many hit songs to choose from over her long career, the singer's manager, Guy Oseary, asked fans on Twitter Tuesday which tunes they think should be included. "Working on Madonna's greatest hits album," he wrote. "Any tracks that you think MUST be on?" Still, the new album won't only feature songs her fans know and love. "Madonna does have plans to go into the studio to record a few new songs for this album," says Rosenberg. The greatest hits album will be Madonna's last with Warner Records, with whom she sold more than 200 million albums. In October 2007, she ended her 27-year relationship with the label when she signed a reported $150 million deal with concert promoter Live Nation.

This had better be a double disc, and include her hits, not random ass "favorites".

I know it. That's the inevitable question.
Beatles' 1 and Elvis' 30 #1 Hits were single discs, and contained 27 and 31 tracks, respectively. Now, some of their songs are shorter than M's, but, still- if a CD houses 80 minutes of music, how'd they fit 31 tracks on Elvis'? Even if it's a 3-minute average per track, that's 90 minutes and change.

She doesn't need a greatest hits, she needs a singles collection IMO. There's just no way she is going to make everyone happy.

And they must include the popular single/radio versions instead of just the album versions. Some of those versions have never been released in a digital format. I didn't care for the edits/versions on the Immaculate Collection. That could fill about 3 discs if they include all of them. 2 if they are a bit more selective and skip the underperforming ones.

Even if she only includes Top 10 singles, she wouldn't be able to fit it on one disc. If you count her major UK hits, she could fill 3 discs. There's also the question of whether or not they're going to work with other labels to get some of her soundtrack cuts on here.
Here's what I came up with...
01. Holiday 02. Borderline 03. Lucky Star 04. Like A Virgin 05. Material Girl 06. Crazy For You 07. Angel 08. Into The Groove 09. Dress You Up 10. Live To Tell 11. Papa Don't Preach 12. Open Your Heart 13. La Isla Bonita 14. Who's That Girl 15. Like A Prayer 16. Express Yourself 17. Cherish
01. Vogue 02. Justify My Love 03. This Used To Be My Playground 04. Erotica 05. Deeper And Deeper 06. Rain 07. I'll Remember 08. Secret 09. Take A Bow 10. Frozen 11. Ray Of Light 12. Beautiful Stranger 13. Music 14. Don't Tell Me 15. Die Another Day 16. Hung Up 17. 4 Minutes

Probably wishful thinking, but it would be really nice if they released a video compilation as well with ALL of her videos (including the ones which have been left off previous sets like Erotica, Deeper And Deeper, You'll See, etc.).

And "Justify My Love". And of course the concert DVDs of the Blond Ambition and ReInvention tours. Whenever a project of this nature is being planned/discussed, they'll announce that those will finally be released but then it doesn't happen for whatever reason.

Which show would they use for the Blond Ambition tour if they released it? Nice I assume?

Something special (like a DVD of some sort) needs to be done to maximize sales potential- new tracks is a step in the right direction (would a new single be withheld from iTuns, either totally or until the album is released?)
BLACK M- most of her soundtrack hits have been affiliated with WB- "Crazy For You" was on Geffen (not sure if it was tield to WB), but it appeared on TIC and STR.
Imagine if BAT or re-Invention is packaged with it? That would be awesome. Or even her best, mostclassic videos.
Yah, probably would be Nice. Japan's show (with ponytail) was released commercially, too, but the audience was so quiet onthat one.

I wonder if they're going to include the edits on TIC, or album versions. Either way, I think they should offer different version of this. A two disk with basically the songs Black Moses posted, and a deluxe 3 disk that encompasses everything.

Japanese audiences are usually quiet during the performances themselves, part of the culture there I think. As long as they stay away from that Barcelona show where she did her own hair it's all good lol. As for bigger sales, a series of commercials would probably be the best bet, along with a new song or two. I'm just hoping that they emphasize the "hits" and not what Madonna herself likes. Personally I really like Drowned World/Substitute for Love but there is no reason why that should be considered a bigger success than something like I'll Remember or You'll See.

Yea, Japanese audiences are really low-key. I would love a DVD though, that'd really make this album a steal. I wouldn't rule out commercial success for this either, the Thriller re-release sold like buckets last year after all.

Madge may have felt that IR and YS were on STR, so that was plenty.
DW is a stronger artistic effort than either of those two, and Madge likes to showcase that sometimes. I liked that it was included n GHV2- but, that project was kinda a hot mess, with no new material. Her excuse that itwould have been presumptuous to include new songs on a greatest hit was lame-o- she didn't feel that way about TIC, and here she is again recording new material for a GH.
But we know she has her fickle moments...

The best part of GHV2 were those tiny outtakes from various photo shoots throughout the years imo (although it was kinda weird to include photos throughout her entire career when the collection focused on 1992-2001, but I didn't complain...)

What a catalog. Pretty impressive how long she's been able to stay in the game, and still be relevant. Hard worker.

Yes- "Into the Groove" is relevant to her U.S. success, even though Billboard didn't chart it on the Hot 100. It was top 10 airplay, #1 sales (per Variety's Singles Sales chart) and usually is her most-played recurrent track. And, of course, it was a No. 1 hit overseas.
Glove, the art featured on GHV2 was the best thing abut that project.

I'm sure it will be a 2cd album like The Eagles The Very Best Of (5xp) and Elton's John's Greatest Hits 1970-2002 (3xp)...

www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/madonna-plans-new-tracks-for-hits-collection-1003952554.storyMadonna Plans New Tracks For Hits Collection. Madonna plans to record new material for Warner. March 18, 2009 by Keith Caulfield, L.A. Madonna is planning to head back into the studio to record new music for an upcoming greatest hits album, tentatively due in September. Details on the project -- which will be her last album for Warner Bros. Records -- have yet to be finalized, says Madonna's longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg. However, she says that "all different options are being explored regarding packaging and content." One of those options perhaps includes input from Madonna's fans on what tunes should be included on the album. Guy Oseary, the diva's manager, has posted missives to his Twitter account, soliciting suggestions from Madonna's devotees about what tracks "must be on" the album. Madonna has released two previous best-ofs: 1990's "The Immaculate Collection" and 2001's "GHV2: Greatest Hits Volume 2." She also issued the ballads collection, "Something To Remember," in 1995. "Immaculate" is tied with Patsy Cline's "Greatest Hits" as the top-selling hits albums ever by a solo female in the U.S. -- both are certified at 10 million sold by the Recording Industry Association of America. In 2007, Madonna signed a long term, all-encompassing deal with Live Nation, which will include her future recorded music. Her last album owed to Warner Bros. is the forthcoming hits package. Madonna signed to the Warner Bros. Records label Sire in 1982 and she released her first single, "Everybody," that year. Her eponymous debut album bowed in 1983. Her most recent set, 2008's "Hard Candy," debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 280,000. It has sold 714,000 in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Hopefully Guy's asking fans on Twitter doesn't mean it will bea single disc. It will be almost impossible to make the collection such that most fans will be really or somewhat happy with it since all the fans have different favorites and stuff. A collection of the essentials and big hits could work, but still that would easily fill 2 discs. When I think of a career-spanning collection that was done pretty well, I think of Gloria Estefan's The Essential. I know it's a Sony BMG release and some things are done differently there. The 2 X CD collection included a significant majority of her big hits. Even a few that weren't. Almost all were in their popular 7" mix/single versions. Many of which were hard to find now. She had two greatest hits collections released prior to that (one in 1992 and the second in 2001). Both included some new songs. Even the new one included a couple unreleased ones.

I really want remastered single mixes too. None of those Q-Sound remixes from The Immaculate Collection. By the way, I have a question about "Into The Groove". I like the version of The Immaculate Collection that starts with the synths and has the piano breakdown, but I hated how it edited the "now I know your mine" refrain. Are there any versions that include both?

Are there any versions that include both? The Single Edit for that song from the You Can Dance DJ promo has both the intro and the "now i know your mine" parts. It's an edit of the Shep Pettibone mix. The full version of the mix was on another DJ promo with full length mixes. The full version has all three of those things you mentioned. It's about 8:40 in length, I'm sending the edit to you now.

E!Online speculates that the compilation will consist mostly of tracks from the last three studio albums- hopefully it's way off the mark.

They can barely fill 70 minutes with including all the singles from the last 3 albums, including the huge flops like "Love Profusion". I think Guy was asking fans in order not to make the compilation look like TIC & GHV2 thrown together. I'm sure fans requested "Dress You Up" to be on it, but I hope "You Must Love Me" also makes the cut, it deserves to be on it after the fantastic live rendition on tour.

In the USA, singles like "Love Profusion" and "Miles Away" didn't even go for official play (not that it would have mattered, mind you).
Could you imagine if it were a GHV3?
Die Another Day American Life Hollywood Nothing Fails Love Profusion Hung Up Sorry Get Together Jump 4 Minutes Give it 2 Me Miles Away New Track New Track New Track
That would be some weak-arse collection. May as well license "Me Against the Music" and tcak on the dance releases "Nobody Knows Me" and "Mother and Father" while at it.
