'Love Is The Answer' - New Studio Album Coming September 2009 NEW YORK, June 22 NY-Columbia-Records Artist's First New Studio Collection Since 2005 Features Intimate Jazz Settings by Diana Krall & Arrangements by Johnny Mandel Love Is The Answer Available Everywhere Tuesday, September 29 NEW YORK, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records proudly announces the release of Love Is The Answer, the eagerly-awaited new studio album from Barbra Streisand, available everywhere on Tuesday, September 29. The first full-length collection of new studio recordings from eight-time Grammy award winner Barbra Streisand since 2005's Guilty Pleasures, and first new Barbra Streisand album since Live In Concert 2006, Love Is The Answer presents the artist as a cabaret and jazz singer of emotional clarity, depth and maturity, offering the listener a warm and intimate selection of late night meditations on love's powers, heartbreaks and solaces. Love Is The Answer provided an opportunity for Streisand to work for the first time with the Grammy-winning Canadian jazz artist Diana Krall (piano) and her quartet (guitar, bass, drums) who brought a refined and sensual poignancy to the album's spare and subtle accompaniments. Rounding out the album's smoky after hours ambience with his sublime orchestrations is the legendary songwriter ("The Shadow of Your Smile") and Grammy-winning arranger Johnny Mandel (who worked with Streisand on her 1993 Back to Broadway album and arranged/co-produced Krall's 1998 Grammy-winning When I Look In Your Eyes). According to the RIAA, Barbra Streisand is the #1 best selling female recording artist in history and the only woman to make the Top 10 all time best selling artists list, which includes Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Over the course of her career, Streisand has recorded 50 gold, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums. An artist of unparalleled accomplishments in multiple entertainment fields, Streisand has made her mark as an award winning actress of stage and screen, recording artist, concert performer, movie producer, film director, screenwriter and songwriter. Having earned two Oscars (Best Actress and Best Song), five Emmys, 11 Golden Globes, 10 Grammys including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement and Grammy Legend Awards, a special Tony Award (in 1970 as "Star of the Decade"), two Cable Ace and three Peabody awards, she is the only performer to hold honors from all of those institutions. In addition, Streisand is a recipient of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award, America's National Medal of Arts and France's Legion of Honor. In December 2008 she became the first female director to receive the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor. www.barbrastreisand.com/index.php?page=news&n_id=1258

I just recently discovered an older album of hers titled Emotion, and it appears that it's actually not that well received among her fans. Sure, it's not the best thing she ever put out, but I thought it was standard 80's cheese, including a few uptempos and the ubiquitous Jim Steinman track is even found on there.

I remember "Emotion"- no, it was not that good, But "Left in the Dark" is a great track- and she sings fantastic on it. Definitely the highlight of that record- she even did a music video to it (where she sits on stage and smokes a cigarette while she's singing- yikes!) That was at the tail-end of the Jim Steinman mini-streak where both Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply had big hits with his songs.
I watched the special the other night. She still has her voice. Her albums have been hampered (and she has always had the problem) of having some really bad material on them- especially when she tries something current- which is why it seems she always streaks back to the old standards. She could still have a hit, but she needs good material- and she's not a good judge of that.

LOVE LOVE LOVE "Left In The Dark." The moment I heard it, I knew it was Steinman. His stuff is just that unmistakeable.
Another underrated album, IMO, is What About Today?, one of her few releases to not even go Gold. It was actually her first stab at contemporary material, and I thought she actually did a great job with it. I also think her next couple of studio albums, Stoney End and Barbra Joan Streisand are also underrated and saw her doing quite well with contemporary material. Her Beatles covers on those albums are surprisingly good. (Not that I'm big on the Beatles, but I still get offended by horrific covers.)

Awesome. I have been an occasional fan of hers. Amazing voice. A true legend. That recent concert special was really great. Everyone likes different things. It's totally fine if you like something that other fans aren't fond of. :)

Nope. It's been 46 years since she released her debut album, The Barbra Streisand Album. There were many years where she released two or more albums, as was a standard practice in those days, and there's rarely a year where she doesn't release anything. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbra_Streisand_discography

Saying it's her 63rd album gives the illusion that it's her 63rd studio (or studio + soundtrack for her), but that number includes live albums and compilations...

Not in love with the title, but if the album is good, I don't care if it's called "Bitches Ain't Shit." Actually if she released an album with that title, I'd buy 10 copies just to support the lulz.

Omg has she done 63 albums for real! Thats crazy. What's crazy is that every last one of them charted on the Billboard albums chart AND were certified at least Gold by the RIAA. (I'm pretty sure about the certifications, even if I'm wrong there can't be that many exceptions.)

From what I see at Wikieditedbyanyonepedia only 3 Barbra albums haven't gotten RIAA certifications.
(Not counting Broadway original cast soundtracks featuring her.)

Yeah Barbra is a wizard in getting people to buy her singing the same songs just in a different package.

I wonder if her album title means she's done a version of the Utopia song.
Doesn't seem like something that'd be a great match if so, but one never knows.

Ugh, I don't think she's opened with those numbers in a while and frankly, there is no buzz whatsoever for this album- Barbra's albums are no longer an 'event'- that is what she needs to do, make them more "events'- she should try to team up with some current hitmakers like she used to- I don't think she cares much anymore.

Barbra's audience will NOT rush out and buy her CDs first week out. (Concert tickets- YES!. CDs- No!) She will pull good numbers overall, thought. A good dozen of her albums are undercertified with good intent. It has alleged that when another female artist comes close to her US sales, her catelog will them be evaluated.

ARTIST: BARBRA STREISAND
ALBUM: LOVE IS THE ANSWER
NEW YORK (Billboard) – Love may be the answer on Barbra Streisand's first studio set since 2005, but the question is: How slow can you go? Paired with Diana Krall as producer (and pianist) and Johnny Mandel as arranger, Streisand gives her trademark romantic-ballad treatment to 13 well-known standards, including Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "If You Go Away" and "Make Someone Happy," from the musical "Do Re Mi." Krall -- producing another artist's album for the first time -- supplies traces of the jazz-club detail that Streisand outgrew decades ago, as heard when the singer quotes the song "How Insensitive" during a Brazilian-inflected rendition of "Gentle Rain." The deluxe version of the album comes with a second disc of alternate takes featuring Streisand accompanied only by Krall's quartet, a back-to-basics experiment that may have inspired the singer's September 26 appearance at New York's Village Vanguard. Still, there's no doubting whose show this is -- only Streisand could turn "Here's to Life" into such a soft-focus weeper.
