^I actually was referring to the "featuring" count that 2m had posted. :) I'd guess that that just counts tracks where it was another act's main track, and it was redited as "featuring" such and such. Like, Justin Timberlake's appearances on the Madonna and Ciarra tracks would count as 2 featuring hits for him- but if he had a track that featured another act, that wouldn't count as part of the "featuring" total. I think that makes sense. ha
The points explanation is in the back of the book, where the lists of achievements are.

Is the "featurings" count just include tracks where an act was the "featuring" act, or tracks where the act was the elad, and had someone else as a "featuring" act? Peaks for 91-100 had received 10 pts. How many points are given for Bubbling Under entries? Yes, the "featurings" list doesn't count when the artist in question is the "lead" artist. The "Bubbling Under" points break down like this: #101-110 = 5 points #111-120 = 4 points #121-135 = 3 points

Did other points methodologies change? Whitney Houston moved ahead of Rod Stewart and Marvin Gaye, despite not having any Hot 100 or Bubblng Under entries from 2006-2008.

Got the book today. Couple things I noticed:
* In the list of top 500 acts, the Hall of Fame designation was not listed next to inductees from 2008 and 2009, even though the information appears in the back section. * In counting # of top 10 hits, Janet Jackson's "State of the World" apparently was not counted as part of her tally, though Mariah Carey's "Forever" was. (and if one counts airplay-chart-only hits among total hits, then Janet's count is off in other spots. I have to look it over more closely lol) And, it's counting re-entries and such each as separate entries (i.e. 'All I Want For Christmas is You" counts as 4 entries, even though just 1 of them charted on the Hot 100)
Book looks good, though. Still not sure why "Forbidden Love" and "Something to Remember" are listed as a classic Non-Hot 100 songs for Madonna, when "Burning Up" isn't even listed. But, ah well. I do like that the gold certification for "Into the Groove" is noted under its Classic listing.

If you can support this company at all, please do it: I had a conversation with a top guy there (not Joel) who said that they are almost out of business after 40 years because of the internet (wikipedia, etc). That's why they are publishing this book so soon after the last edition (2 years - unprecedentedly early) - to earn fast profits! I REALLY hope that he still releases the Hot 100 Chart collection for this decade like he did all the other ones because I love those books :(

Very nice- put the book on sale for $20+ less than what pre-orders paid for it.

The pre-order was $69.95 (plus $10 and change for shipping). So, with the $47.95 deal, you'll pay $58-$60. That's the best deal you'll get right now, as Record Research is the only outlet to get it (it eventually does get to other sites like amazon.com, though- not sure if it would show up in one of the merchants thatsell through amazon.com).
I've always liked Whitburn's books and points system. But, I also think looking at week-to-week chart runs rather than just the peak is a viable way to gauge things, too- why I liked the one Billboard used for the Hot 100 50th anniversary edition- it makes sense to weigh pre-BDS/-SoundSca-era singles differently.

^Wow. I didn't read this whole thread. I didn't know that it showed "week-to-week" chart runs. That's fantastic. It's worth the price then. I thought the book just showed where each song peaked at by each artist.
I'll buy it now at that current price. It's a no-brainer for me for me b/c I'm into stats and Billboard chart history.

No, no, colson- the book does NOT include week-to-week runs- in Top Pop Annual (which went through 1999, I think), it did show the week-to-week rankings for tracks that peaked in the top 5 (if I'm recallin correctly).
I was just saying that the methodology Billboard used for its 50th Hot 100 aniversary edition (it didn't explain how it weighted pre-1991 hits, though) was a good one, too- an alternate to the one Whitburn uses in his books.
A "bad" thing about Whitburn's method is that you can have a single that peaked in the top 10 (let's say, #5), didn't have great longevity in the top 40 (let's say, 3 weeks), but hung around the Hot 100 for a decent amount of time (let's say, 15 weeks). Using Whitburn's methodology, that would translate to 85 points. If another single hit #5 and spent 21 weeks on the Hot 100 (but 20 of those in the top 40), that scores 90 points- kinda silly for those two singles to be separated by only 5 points. Or even worse, maybe that other single peaked at #7 and spent the same amount of time on the Hot 100- it receives less points than the aforementiond #5 hit.

Biggest differences:
The book is now 8-1/2 x 11", much bigger Includes regional hits (meh)
STILL clumps all re-entries together, thus breaking the chronological flow of the listings. Hate that.

Hmm. Even though ARSA is already a great source for researching local hits, I like the idea of having the Breakout Hits and Territorial Hits listed. Since it looks like he'll never do an update of the Bubbling Under standalone, I might get this just to have that data in print form. We'll see.
I guess he's never gonna publish a new dance book, though, which kinda sucks since the old one has been out of print for so long and sells too far out of my price range to get a used copy.

I wonder if the last edition (2003) of the Billboard Book of #1 Hits will be the last?
Didn't Billboard let go of Fred Bronson?
That's probably my favorite chart book. I hope he makes another.

Bronson's last book was an update of Hottest Hot 100 Hits, that went through 2006 (I think). Haven't heard anything about an update to the No. 1 hits book.

Thanks, HolidayGuy! Let's hope Billboard lets him do an update on his last #1 Hits book.

Updated Top Pop Singles book coming in June.
They've put everything back chronologically, but now relegate "featurings" artist credits to the prime artist listing.
Looks good.

Well I'm not sure if I'd pick up the new edition, though the chronological thing is a HUGE advantage. Much easier to read...
I'm more into picking up past issues for the nice trivia bits that aren't available now :(
