With stations across the country playing Michael recurrents and having marathons, and giving us up to date information on his tragedy, do you think there will an MJ drought this week? Will all current songs sort of stabilizing and not really increasing or even losing their bullets? Also take into consideration that Fourth of July is next week too, so really we might have two weeks of just sloppy panel updates.

Definitely....it's already happened. Most songs had bad updates today, even the big gainers like You Belong With Me and I Got a Feeling had smaller updates than usual.

Yea it's expected. I mean KIIS still devoted a whole hour to him today (that I know of), and yesterday a lot as well, AMP did the same... etc.

Respect where it's due, of course, but the effect this is having on charts everywhere is already starting to piss me off. Everything else is sort of running into problems because Michael Jackson's entire back catalog is clogging up positions. iTunes is looking absolutely ridiculous.

Yep, it's happening. I think this gonna last for at least 2-3 weeks, if not longer.

Is it possible for one of his recurrents to actually start charting on pop again?

Is it possible for one of his recurrents to actually start charting on pop again? Only if the label starts pushing it as a single, I believe.

In that case wouldn't have his album of the 25th Anniversary of Thriller had charted on BB200? Wouldn't that be his label "pushing" it as an album? I really don't like the idea of having recurrents and stuff. I think it would be much better to have recurrents as if they have 10 points counting them as 0, 11 as 1, 15 as 5, etc, it wouldn't be correct, but it would give us more of an idea of what is actually the HOT songs for the week, or most sold albums.

For albums there's a different rule. Thriller 25th aniversary didn't charted because it wasn't a new album, it was a re-issue of Thriller. They counted them as the same album, i think.

I smell another 3 weeks for BBP at the top of the chr/pop chart and the hot 100 I dunno..."Don't Trust Me" might still take over next week. Plus, despite losing spins today, BBP still lost more and the gap that was over 300 is now around 250.

I think it'll be similar to the CC thing for a week or so. Stations will go all urban in honor of MJ

MJ effect would be short on Top 40 (I expect MJ tribute to end this weekend with exception of AT40 playing his songs on next weekend)
What I worry about is AC/Urban/Urban AC/Rhythmic/Hot AC... I think those formats are playing A LOT more Michael than any Top 40 stations (FYI, it seems like all-Michael tribute is over in LA right now)

With the bulk of the effect experienced the first few days. There is a high demand for MJ right now as he just died, but they can't afford to allow too much time to pass before resuming their usual playlists. Same for sales. Give it a week and it'll start to level off a bit. Some of his albums and songs will hang around, but not nearly this many.

By Monday playlists will go back to normal. So this effect will last a little longer.

Will not happen. Lovegame still rising, DTM only slowly sliding, BBP plunging.

Message to Epic: push "Gone too Soon" as a single. Was it a single during the Dangerous era? It'd be PERFECT. It's a beautiful song. It wouldn't actually get to the top of airplay charts (AC?) but it'd be special. Have a new music video with montages of old video/interview/performance clips and donate proceeds of downloads to a cause that MJ supported.

Lol, it's sort of sad because alot of songs still rising in the top 15 or so have had the most difficult of chart runs.. first the Clear Channel playlist thing set them back, and now this even more so... :(

One of the best artists that many of us grew up with is getting airplay after his death and people are complaining about how it's affecting the charts?

Yep, it pissed me off that this had to happen this week. It hurt The Veronicas on iTunes on their moment to shine and it's stopped 3OH!3 from hitting #1 on this chart. Unless this gains enough and The Black Eye Peas drop enough tomorrow. If they don't get it this week, they will never. Lady GaGa and Pitbull are less than 1,000 spins away now, and they'll definitely surpass 3OH!3 next week unless something happens.
Definitely it's affecting a lot of songs. I mean, Thursday afternoon after his confirmed death at 2:30 PM, "Thriller" received 212 spins on pop. I haven't even looked at today yet, but I'm sure it's huge. I know he was The King of Pop and everything, and his death was tragic, but I'm so sick and tired of hearing about his death now! I just can't take it much longer. Leave the dead to rest in piece!

I'm sorry, but the death of a music icon is a little more important than your favorite song "smashing on iTunes & rocking that big bullet!!!!". I think we can all deal with the charts being screwy for a few days, it's really not that big of a deal. One of the greatest and most influential artists of our time deserves some respect and if it comes at the cost of some spins, oh well.

Check this out: www.mmr247.com/mmrweb/Reports/Reg/EMD.asp?SOngID=1088622&NumDays=7At the very least, I would think stations are keeping in mind the priority for current-charting songs to get enough airplay, while at the same time balancing it out with Michael Jackson songs, which would likely substitute for most recurrents from recent years and/or gold singles (80s/90s/early 2000s) on their playlists. In my station's case, they spent yesterday playing a full hour of Michael Jackson songs during their daily 80s and 90s request show. During the day, their playlist contains at least one, sometimes two slots for retro classics each hour, and yesterday all those slots consisted of MJ songs. The rest of the playlist stayed the same. It was only on Thursday evening, hours after his death, where all non-Canadian content was all Michael Jackson. My station, being licensed for broadcast in Canada, is still subject to Canadian content rules regardless of the circumstances. I understand and acknowledge the reactions of posters on this board, but gradually over the next few days, radio station playlists should return to normal. We'll still hear a lot of Michael Jackson songs but not to the extent that current songs are getting little to no airplay or it will be all-day/all-night MJ song marathons. While we are indeed celebrating his music, I'm sure he would want us to get back to normal and at the same time, celebrate the many current artists he inspired over the years that are now making their turn at the charts. Sure, none of them may ever match what he's accomplished, but let's not lose sight of the fact that he paved the way for the music that is out there today. Whether it's for better or for worse, that's left for us to decide. But without a doubt, he helped change the music industry altogether.

Some of the posts in this thread are very disappointing. The man who shaped the industry and radio today like few others has passed away, and people want to pay tribute to him.
