There are some songs that explode out of the gate and hit #1, but there are others that just hit a brick wall and collapse. What are some examples? Here are some that I can think as of now.
Beyonce - Deja Vu
33-21-19-15-14-15-22-33-41-49
10 Weeks.
Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up
43-31-21-20-19-18-21-23-37-40-44
11 Weeks.
Kelly Clarkson - Never Again
46-24-23-22-22-22-24-26-27-28-34-33-36-38-41-37-41-45-49
19 Weeks.
Ciara feat. Justin Timberlake - Love Sex Magic
39-25-21-16-17-16-15-13-16-23-35-41
13 Weeks.

Don't forget Britney's Gimme More. That's the ultimate case I've ever seen of a song just being massive out of the gate, and then just crashing and burning a few weeks later.

*NSYNC's "Pop". It went from like +800 to 0 in one week.

Kristinia DeBarge's "Goodbye" certainly fits the bill. It saw some strong gains week after week, stalled out at #13 in it's 8th week on, then sunk like as stone.

What was Candyman's chart run? I just remember it going to negative 1000 spins so quickly.

Nickelback's "Gotta Be Somebody" and Eminem's "We Made You" are two notables I can think of.

Don't count this yet. It's still charting. It could get a second wind. We don't know, none of us are psychic or are from the future. Nickelback's "Gotta Be Somebody" GBS: 39-27-23-19-19-17-15-14-14- 13-15-15-15-15-15- 13-14-17-18-23 ??? That's a good run, if you ask me. Sure it failed to go top ten, but it had super longevity. It still went recurrent. It spent 16 weeks in the top 20. (11 in the top 15) I know it stalled, but it didn't crash, which I think is the whole point of this thread is songs that climbed fast, stopped suddenly, and fell hard.

Doesn't really seem like that's what this one did either... "Goodbye"48 - 40 - 34 - 25 - 22 - 21 - 18 - 14 - 13 - 13 - 14 - 20 - 24 - 31 - 39 15 weeks.

Yeah, I picture a song hitting a brick wall as a song that has huge moves for a few weeks and suddenly stops rising. 'Never Again' seems to be the best example so far in this thread, imo. Wow...

Gotta Be Somebody didn't hit a brick wall, it had a pretty decent chart run (although underwhelming considering their previous era) and lingered in the 13 - 15 area for a long time. Just because it didn't make the top 10 doesn't mean it hit a brick wall.
Goodbye is arguable, but I would say it just had a quick fall after having a decent rise.

^The odd thing about that one is it plummeted after it hit the top 5 though. Usually most of these types of songs always get around #15-20 and then crash out, long before even hitting top 10.

Keep in mind that that was during that ridiculous 25/-3 recurrent rule (below #25 and losing spins for at least 3 weeks). But still, it probably wouldn't have exceeded 13-14 weeks in the top 40.

I think we can add Madonna's "4 Minutes" to this list. Yes, it had some degree of longevity, but that doesn't change the fact that it hit a brick wall. I mean, a top 50 debut at #26 only to peak at #5?
26, 19, 14, 12, 11, 8, 8, 6, 5, 6, 6, 9, 13, 18, 23, 28, 34, 35, 38

Never Again had good longevity it seems though. A brick wall is a brick wall. If a car is driving at 80mph and smashes into a brick wall. It's going to stay there. Just because it doesn't suddenly descend back to where it came from doesn't mean it didn't hit the brick wall in the first place.

Oh, right. 20/20 didn't start until November of '01. It started sometime in '97 but for a few months, there was a 25/-3 rule. Another example, that I forget the chart run but is George Michael's 'Jesus To A Child'. The Top 40 chart run had it debuting at something like #22 and jumping to #18 and peaking at #17 the third week? Something like that.

In addition to "Candyman" and "Carwash", Christina Aguilera also hit a brick wall quickly with "Dirrty" (but "Dirtty" had very impressive longevity afterwards):
43-29-23-16-16-14-20-23-30-32-36-36-35-33-30-34-35-37-42-off-46-off
Also, Baz Luhrman "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen":

All Star Tribute "What's Going On" 27-26-25-27-26-34-41-44-48
The above was probably expected though
Didn't Pink's "Feel Good Time" have a fast rise?

Practically almost every song in the 80s and 90s had huge rises and even faster falls. Even classics from that era had horrible runs. Anyone explain that?
