I think that it's crazy that some of these #2 hits overshadow many of the #1 hits that these artists have produced.... "Independence Day," anybody???

I know, but that's my point. "Blessed," "I Love You," I bet the majority of general country music fans wouldn't name those as Martina McBride songs... same goes for Reba. "Fancy" was not a #1 hit but it's her signature.. for Shania, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" among others... that's why I usually judge artists by album sales and not radio hits (Craig Morgan, for example).

I tend to think the opposite regarding album sales. How a single finishes on the chart is relevant to what songs are being played at that same time, whereas album sales can be inflated due to cross-genre appeal. I would actually think that Martina's biggest hit was "I Love You", although I have no chart data to back that up.

I believe that "I Love You" spent 5 weeks at #1 -- which is her longest stay at the top. Many of Martina's signature songs didn't reach #1 -- such as "Valentine" and "Independence Day".

While Dolly Parton is the Queen of #1s, Tanya Tucker is the Queen of #2s. Those runner-up hits are: 1. I'll Come Back As Another Woman-1987 2. Love Me Like You Used To-1987 3. Highway Robbery-1989 4. My Arms Stay Open All Night-1990-her biggest #2 hit! 5. Down To My Last Teardrop-1991 6. Without You What Do I Do With Me-1992 7. Two Sparrows In A Hurricane-1992 8. It's A Little Too Late-1993 9. Soon-1993 What do you think?

In a similar vein, I'm working on a list of artists whose biggest hits went to #2. Here's what I have so far. Note that I'm observing a one-year lag period, which is why Jake Owen and Randy Houser aren't on this list. I'm amazed that Hal Ketchum and Lee Roy Parnell managed to get three #2s apiece. I'm sure I've missed a few, as well.
Tompall & the Glaser Brothers is particularly baffling. It was their first single in 8 years, biggest chart hit, and there were no other singles off the album. What was up with that?
Susie Allanson - We Belong Together (1978) Deborah Allen - I've Been Wrong Before (1984) Keith Anderson - I Still Miss You (2008) Steve Azar - I Don't Have to Be Me ('Til Monday) (2002)
David Ball - Thinkin' Problem (1994) / Ridin' with Private Malone (2002) Bobby Bare, Jr. - Daddy What If (1974) (w/ Bobby Bare) Blackhawk - Every Once in a While (1994) / I'm Not Strong Enough to Say No (1995) Suzy Bogguss - Drive South (1992) James Bonamy - I Don't Think I Will (1996) Johnny Bond - Little Bottles (1965) Boy Howdy - They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore (1994) Paul Brandt - I Do (1996) Elton Britt - Someday (1946)
Anita Carter - Down the Trail of Achin' Hearts (1951) Benny Carter and His Orchestra - Hurry, Hurry! (1944) June Carter Cash - Jackson (1967) / If I Were a Carpenter (1970) (both duets with Johnny) Kelly Clarkson - Because of You (2007) (w/ Reba) David Allan Coe - Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile (1984) Tommy Collins - You Better Not Do That (1954) Confederate Railroad - Queen of Memphis (1992)
Ted Daffan's Texans - No Letter Today (1944) Lacy J. Dalton - Takin' It Easy (1981) Mac Davis - Hooked on Music (1981) Skeeter Davis - I Can't Help You (I'm Falling Too) (1960) / The End of the World (1962)
Andy Griggs - You Won't Ever Be Lonely (1999) / She's More (2000)
Hal Ketchum - Small Town Saturday Night (1991) / Past the Point of Rescue (1992) / Hearts Are Gonna Roll (1993)
Zeke Manners - Sioux City Sue (1946) McBride & the Ride - Sacred Ground (1992) Ned Miller - From a Jack to a King (1962)
Patti Page - Tennessee Waltz (1950) Lee Roy Parnell - What Kind of Fool Do You Think I Am (1992) / Tender Moment (1993) / A Little Bit of You (1995) Anita Pointer - Too Many Times (1986) (w/ Earl Thomas Conley)
Billy Joe Royal - Tell It Like It Is (1989) / Till I Can't Take It Anymore (1989)
SHeDAISY - I Will… But (2000) Daryle Singletary - I Let Her Lie (1995) / Amen Kind of Love (1996) Southern Pacific - New Shade of Blue (1988) Tommy Shane Steiner - What If She's an Angel (2001) Sting - I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying (1997) (w/ Toby Keith) Marty Stuart - The Whiskey Ain't Workin' (1992) (w/ Travis Tritt)
Tompall & The Glaser Brothers - Lovin' Her Was Easier (Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again) (1981)

Tanya Tucker was born in October, 1958. That would make her 20 in 1978. The hits she had during the time she was 20 were: 1. Texas When I Die-1979-#5 2. I'm The Singer, You're The Song-1979-#18 For Ten Pound Hammer-That is an impressive list, however the greatest one hit wonder with ONLY a #2 hit is Red Ingle & The Natural Seven. They held the runner up spot for eleven weeks with Temptation Tim-Tayshun in 1947. The biggest #2 hit in country music belongs to Kitty Wells. Her Making Believe was a bridesmaid for fifteen weeks in 1955. It was stuck at #2 while Webb Pierce had his biggest hit with In The Jailhouse Now (#1 for 21 weeks). You mention Tompall and the Glaser Brothers having a #2 hit in 1981. Remember, Jim Glaser had a #1 in 1984 with You're Gettin' To Me Again (his ONLY #1 hit!).

I wonder if Andy Griggs likes the fact that Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are a married couple. I mean his You Won't Ever Be Lonely was stuck for two weeks at #2 behind McGraw's Please Remember Me in 1999 and the next year he was #2 behind Hill's The Way You Love Me while She's More was holding on to the runner-up spot for five weeks!

Heh, good call. How "She's More" missed #1, I'll never know. He had TWO songs block him from #1, so something was up.

Definitely not desirable to see George move up this ignominious list, but if someone (the chart gods) were to offer me the assurances that George would get six more #1s to bring his career total to 50, in exchange for having to see him get six more #2 peakers and thus take the top spot on this list, I'd gladly make that trade.
But maybe he can reach 50 #1s without having to settle for more than a couple more #2s over the next half-decade...

Amy Dalley probably has over 50 1's on various charts too. But for Billboard purists, there is only Billboard.

Either I do not how to count or did not update Reba McEntire's standing of having eight #2 hits. Either way, those have been updated for you keeping track at home. Those bridesmaid hits are: 1. Walk On-1990 2. Fallin' Out Of Love-1991 3. Till You Love Me-1995 4. And Still-1995 5. The Fear Of Being Alone-1996-chart wise, her biggest #2 hit! 6. I'd Rather Ride Around With You-1997 7. Because Of You-with Kelly Clarkson-2007 8. Cowgirls Don't Cry-with Brooks & Dunn-2009 Titles 1-7 are on MCA Records. Title 8 is on Arista Records.

I have updated my #2 Artists thread for you for two reasons: 1. Don Williams has just been elected to the Hall of Fame. Congratulations to him and also to Jimmy Dean, Ferlin Husky, and Billy Sherrill. 2. Let us face it, Brad Paisley will have his fourth #2 hit in tow with American Saturday Night. His other #2 hits are: 1. Wrapped Around-2002 2. Little Moments-2004 3. Welcome To The Future-2009 4. American Saturday Night-2010 Had the last two went to #1, Paisley's 12 in a row would look like this compared to other artist's chart topping streaks: 1. Alabama-21-1980-1987 2. Sonny James-16-1967-1971 3. Buck Owens-14-1963-1967 4. Brad Paisley-12-2006-2010 5. George Strait-11-1986-1989 Enjoy!

For better or worse, Keith Urban has become the 51st artist in country music history with at least four #2 hits. They are: 1. You're My Better Half-2005-chart wise, his biggest #2 hit 2. Tonight I Wanna Cry-2006 3. I Told You So-2007 4. I'm In-2010 Who will be next?

Time to welcome another artist to the 'runner-up club'. With Sugarland collecting their fourth #2 hit, they become the 52nd artist in history to have that many. They are: 1. Baby Girl-2005 2. Something More-2005-chart wise, their biggest #2 hit 3. Stay-2008 4. Stuck Like Glue-2010

How about the most number 2s as a percentage of top 40 or top 10 hits? Or the highest 2:1 ratio? Those would be interesting stats.

How about the most number 2s as a percentage of top 40 or top 10 hits? Or the highest 2:1 ratio? Those would be interesting stats. Just for sbp17: I am only doing the top ten on this list. If you want to do the other 42 artists on this list feel free to do so. I am doing a percentage of an artist's #2 hits as a total of their top ten output (percentages are rounded off). Ready? 1. Eddy Arnold-12 #2s/92 top tens-13% 2. Conway Twitty-12/75-16% 3. Johnny Cash-11/52-21% 4. Kenny Chesney-10/38-26% 5. Ray Price-9/46-20% 6. George Jones-9/78-12% 7. Tanya Tucker-9/40-23% 8. Bill Anderson-8/37-22% 9. Merle Haggard-8/71-11% 10. Reba McEntire-8/60-13% We have a winner, Chesney, with 26% of his top tens being #2 hits. Hope that was helpful!

Those Tracy Lawrence #2's should have been #1's. It's a shame to what has happened to his career!
