I am with jhomes87, I count it as 28 too, if Billboard gives it credit as his 28th #1 hit then it's his 28th.

Sorry for the double post, but onebuffalo, please consider re-listening to this song. If you listen REAL closely, you hear Tim on background vocals around 1:10 of the video for a good portion of the song then yes you hear him say "Bring on, Bring On, Bring on the rain", YES, please give him credit as he did have his vocals and you surely hear him here. Please he has 28 #1's, I realize this is the album version, and my radio station actually played this version on my town's Classic Country station.

It doesn't matter if all Tim McGraw did was break wind in the corner while Jo Dee Messina recorded the song, the fact that it was credited as a #1 song on the charts to BOTH artists overrules any personal opinions of how involved he was on the track vocally. That's really all there is to it, lol.

If Billboard says he has 28 #1's then he has 28 #1's. All Faith does on "It's Your Love" is provide background vocals, but she still gets credit for the number 1, and rightfully so.

Ya, I will be honest, when I listened to the song the other day, I will be honest, I thought I heard Tim at around 1 min of the song but wasn't sure so I listened to my iPod's Country 2000s list of #1 hits and listened again and listened real close this time, I was shocked when the vocals started to blend together at that exact moment like it did in the video I posted. So ya, I see why they call it a duet instead of featuring Tim McGraw. Now I will say the new Chris Young song that just came out and features Vince Gill, I barely hear him or at all, but I hear from others they can hear him or recognize his vocals in the latter part of his song.

Assuming Tim keeps up the pace, there's no question in my mind that he is the most successful singles artist of this generation. He is certainly tops among actively recording artists, and really Kenny is the only other one who is even close. Add to that the fact that Tim has three billboard #1 songs of the year (1997, 1998, and 2004). He is da man!

34. Luke Bryan-15-2010-2016 39. Jason Aldean-14-2006-2015 40. Carrie Underwood-14-2006-2016 41. Dierks Bentley-14-2003-2016 44. Zac Brown Band-13-2008-2016 45. Rascal Flatts-13-2002-2016
This is such an interesting section of the list. I'm guessing Luke will end up Top 10 or 15, Carrie & Jason will end up Top 25, ZBB will go Top 30, and Dierks & RF will end up top 35 all time.

Tim has had some exceptional singles which unfortunately peaked at #2 @ Mediabase; three which immediately come to mind would be Phil Vassar's wonderful composition 'For A Little While', 'Unbroken' and the downright flawless 'My Little Girl'.
Suffice it to say that I'm delighted that 'Humble and Kind' reached the penthouse, although once upon a time, a scintillating saong from Tim such as that one would have spent at least a month at #1 IMHO.

I have updated Jake Owen's #1s totals to six with American Country Love Song. Congratulations, Jake! Now, time for some analysis:
96. Jo Dee Messina-6-1998-2005 97. Rodney Atkins-6-2006-2011 98. Darius Rucker-6-2008-2013 99. Thomas Rhett-6-2013-2016 100. Jake Owen-6-2011-2016 101. Carl Smith-5-1951-1955-HOF 102. Jack Greene-5-1966-1969 103. Faron Young-5-1955-1972-HOF 104. Lynn Anderson-5-1970-1974 105. Glen Campbell-5-1968-1977-HOF
Owen has taken that coveted #100 spot to land in the top 100 of those artists with the most #1 hits. If your favorite is not in the top 100, they need seven chart toppers to do so.

Welcome Justin Moore to the list of those artists with the most #1 hits. He enters the list with these five chart toppers:
1. Small Town USA-2009 2. If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away-2011 3. Til My Last Day-2013 4. Lettin' The Night Roll-2014 5. You Look Like I Need A Drink-2016

That's awesome for Billy! Ten is a pretty big milestone. Puts him at about number 12 on what I would call the "active" roster. Billy is an artist whose success is sometimes easy to overlook.

This chart is so interesting to me - thanks for putting it together, @buffalocountry!
There are so many pairings/groups of three near each other on the chart who either debuted around the same time, have similar music, or have something in common (bands) that make me wonder who will end up with the most #1's among them.
8. Tim McGraw-27-1994-2016 9. Kenny Chesney-27-1997-2016 (the #1 artist of the 2000s) -The consistent 20 year kings. I think they will stay tied for a long time, but I'll guess Tim outlasts Kenny.
11. Dolly Parton-25-1971-2006-HOF 12. Reba McEntire-25-1983-2011-HOF -If one were to get another #1 (maybe as a featured artist), I will go with Dolly.
15. Blake Shelton-22-2001-2016 21. Keith Urban-20-2001-2016 23. Brad Paisley-19-1999-2015 -I hope Brad or Keith, but I know it'll be Blake.
34. Luke Bryan-15-2010-2016 35. Jason Aldean-15-2006-2016 36. Carrie Underwood-15-2006-2016 37. Dierks Bentley-15-2003-2016 -The most interesting part of the chart for me. Luke still has another album of singles that only last 3 months to get to the top left in him, while I think the other three don't, especially Dierks. Luke will jump up closer to Keith and Carrie vs. Jason will continue for a long time.
44. Zac Brown Band-13-2008-2016 45. Rascal Flatts-13-2002-2016 -Rascal Flatts is well into their downslope, but ZBB is entertaining a pop era (I think?). I would go with ZBB.
65. Lady Antebellum-9-2009-2014 66. Florida Georgia Line-9-2012-2016 -Only interesting because they are/were mega-"groups" for a good 2 years each, where nothing could touch them. Obviously FGL will edge out Lady A.
78. Shania Twain-7-1995-1998 80. Taylor Swift-7-2007-2013 -The crossovers! I think Shania will try another chart push eventually, but Taylor will get another country #1 (or more) down the road, I'm sure.
81. Chris Young-7-2009-2016 82. Eric Church-7-2012-2016 -If Chris continues putting out poppy, tempo driven stuff, I think he could get quite a few more #1's. Eric's chart history is inconsistent, but he's far more A-list than Chris. I'll risk it and say Chris outlasts Eric for #1's.
99. Thomas Rhett-6-2013-2016 100. Jake Owen-6-2011-2016 -Thomas, easy.
120. Martina McBride-5-1996-2002 124. Sara Evans-5-1999-2011 -These two bridged the Top Female gap between Shania/Faith and Carrie/Miranda/(Taylor...) and kind of got lost in the shuffle. I don't think either will manage another #1, but I'll guess Martina snags a surprise chart topper (maybe as a feature).

I really wonder how safe George's record is? Tim/Kenny probably don't have another 17-18 left in them, Blake has an outside shot at 20+ more if he continues his torrid pace, and Luke Bryan would need another 15 years of 2 number one songs per year. I'll also go out on a limb and say George somehow gets to an even 45 or 46 (I wished for 50 back in the day) as a tag along or duet or some sort of group thing.
King George will not always have the record, but he should stay on top for some time I'm guessing.

Tim was the most played artist of the 2000-09 decade on North American radio with 7.8+ million spins, and 'Something Like That was played some 488,700+ times, easily the most played song of the decade.
8 of the 10 most played artists of that decade were country stars; Green Day and Nickelback finished 8th and 10th, respectively.
Tim sounds really rejuvenated since escaping the clutches of Curb Records, and several of his singles from Felt Good On My Lips up to and including How I'll Always Be are on a par with his 1994-2009 material IMHO.

I don't really pay too much attention to artists who were most played across all genres because it's not an apples to apples comparison in a lot of circumstances. It's a great factoid without a doubt, but competition for spins on the Country Chart just isn't the same as the pop chart. Not to mention the number of country stations is pretty crazy across the country. Tim had some monster songs in the 00's for sure...Something Like That (actually a 1999 single), Live Like You Were Dying, My Next 30 Years, etc. and his music today rivals those. At the time decade charts were released, I'd seen that Somebody Like You (Keith Urban) was the most played song of the decade on Billboard, so who knows for sure.
Either way, Tim is on a roll (three songs on the chart) and will finish high on the list when it's all said and done. I'd argue that Tim's #1's are bigger hits as a whole than other artists on the list, with a handful or so of top songs of the year. Quite a career.

King George will not always have the record, but he should stay on top for some time I'm guessing. I think it is also well to consider age as well, as far as how much more they have left: Tim 49 Kenny 48 Blake 40 Keith 49 yesterday (happy birthday Keith!) Brad 44 tomorrow (happy birthday Brad!) Luke 40 Jason 39 Carrie 33 Dierks 40 Based strictly on this simplistic analysis (number ones vs age) you would have to like the chances of Blake, Brad, and Carrie. But when you throw in momentum and batting average, it probably shifts more to Tim, Keith, and Luke. Tim and Keith are still killing it at 49! Country is such a unique genre in how well artists do in their 40s. Unlike Pop, the Lee Ann Rimes, Taylor Swifts, and Hunter Hayes are more the exception than the rule.

Also for reference, George Strait's total of number ones at various ages; Age #1s 30 1 35 11 40 22 45 32 50 37 55 42 60 45
So to get there, you have to do really well in your 30s, and not let up in your early 40s. Are any of the previously mentioned artists on this kind of pace? Blake is right on pace but he is going to have to do better than "She's Got a Way With Words" if he wants to get there
I didnt realize it but Carrie is actually ahead of the Kings pace, with 15 chart toppers at age 33. For a female artist with the rather stiff headwind they face, that is extremely impressive!

It's pretty easy to get on record pace when compared to George as he started so late. More than pace compared to age, the culture of the music charts means a lot more. George (after 1990) and Tim (until around 2008 or so) continued to score #1 songs in an era where multi-week smashes were the norm. In an era where there are 40+ #1 songs each year, totals can accumulate quickly.

I don't know if George Strait's record is ever going to be passed, honestly. There's just no one in that list that I can see feasibly reaching 45 #1 hits. Most of them would have to double or triple their amount of #1 hits to reach George Strait's record and most of the ones that are closest are definitely past the halfway point of their careers (Kenny, Tim, Brad, Keith). It's crazy how many #1s George was able to rack up in his career... imagine if he'd started even younger, lol.
