I doubt CHR wants another ballad from Mariah. I disagree. There are hardly any ballads on Pop radio right now and I think that they will give this a chance since the label actually did SOMETHING proactive this era and realized that IWKWLI was a mistake...they left "Bye Bye" to plummet for over three months. Also, I didn't want H.A.T.E.U. as a single at first either, but the best indicators for market researchers in the music business to gauge public reaction are digital downloads, streams on myspace/lala/last.fm, and reviews. H.A.T.E.U has been downloaded and streamed more than any of the rest. People also comment on it the most on Amazon and I-Tunes after purchasing the album. Ribbon and Angels Cry are doing well, too, but not nearly to the same degree as H.A.T.E.U. The fact of the matter is, this could be BIG on Rhythmic and Urban, and if Pop doesn't immediately pick this up, then I have a feeling that they'll follow suit like they did with "Obsessed," except probably sooner since it goes for adds on all formats at the same time.

It would have been wise for the label to have chosen a better second single, then they wouldn't need to rush release a third one when the album is barely a week old. Well that didn't happen now did it? No? Ok, so they must make the best decisions possible for the current situation (which they are doing). Whether or not this was the right single choice is debatable but it is a wise decision to throw something else out there. Personally, I could care less if this is a big hit or not (it's not like it's going to save the album from the forever-lasting commercial "failure" stamp). At this point I just want to see a good video and a few more live performances.

I could see this being big on Urban and Rhythmic but I doubt CHR will touch this.

^ ugh @ rellybois i dont know what lambs your speaking of but most and exp myself always felt it was a horrible single choice. I dont think 3 or 4 ppl speak for all of Mariah fans do they?, the general opinion was it was a bad single.

Its her best song IMO since WBT Lol it was- what, 2 weeks ago- that the lambs were saying that about IWTKWLI? Which "lambs"? Would you mind wrangling up some quotes because I certainly don't remember many Mariah fans labeling I Want To Know What Love Is as her best song since We Belong Together. Most loved the song but was hesitant about its release.

Because it would have been wise of her label to wait another two months before releasing the next single (when it is clear IWTKWLI is going nowhere). This is what should happen when a song isn't being received well, you move on. duh. I agree. If a single doesn't work the best thing is release another single before it's too late. I love this song but I'm not sure if this could do well on the charts

^ Absolutely disagree. In the Obsessed thread there were pages upon pages of people reposting reviews of the song and saying it was the return of '90s Mariah, her best song since WBT, would return her to the top of the charts.

I would love for you to find me, just five quotes from members who made this particular statement (because I doubt you would be able to find as much). What happens is one or two overzealous fans make ridiculous statements and then later on people over-exaggerate and proclaim all or most fans made similar remarks. This happens all the time with various artists on this board.

The album version took me way too long to get into, but I made an edit pretty similar to the Today Show version (w/out the second verse and second chorus), and it finally hit hard. There's no monotony or repeated bridges, it's barely over 3 minutes, and it gets to the stronger vocals much more quickly. I'm not trying to compare it to WBT, but structurally, without the second verse and chorus, it follows the same formula. If they use a similar edit, then I think this may actually perform much better than some are expecting. Since it's not official: www.mediafire.com/?3x1zznlntjzWow, I haven't heard this before, but I really like that mix. LOL. After hearing the album version---this does drag and there is really no big finish or wow moment for me. I don't know that this will be able to get any traction, just because of the logistical issues mentioned above: 3rd single the week after the album's release AND its not like this project has massive sales behind it. Having said that, this is different than anything else out there right now. Maybe that will help it out.

Timing is key much like LULT this will not be a hit, i only repeat that because in about a month or 2 everyone will be surprised and dissapointed. Listen to the melody and the emotional vibe of this song and i promise you will end up loving it. Its on par with DFAU melody wise but i connect with it on a deeper level.

I think a lot of Pop listeners enjoyed "Obsessed" more for the quirky, clever lyrics, but were put off initially by the lack of melody. While this isn't uptempo, it's drenched in melody, and I think a lot of people will be a bit shocked when they hear it: like someone else said, it sounds like nothing else on the radio, and lyrically, a lot of people will be able to connect...after all, this IS her first ballad since DFAU about the hardships of relationships, except it's not a retread of WBT or DFAU in the slightest...instead of another yearning-for-a-lost-love, she's singing about emotional turmoil and vindication. It comes off as much more genuine than IWKWLI, BB, or ISIL.

I wish they would have kept the more stripped-down backing The-Dream's demo featured (it would have made the song even better IMO).

This is going to be a bomb. She should've released this to rhythmic/urban and Ribbon to pop.

I wish she would've kept the lyrics from his first verse and then just did the "no turning back" part as the second...but oh well. Also, I think "Ribbon" is the obvious follow-up.

I think the lyrics are much stronger on Mariah's version.

I'm betting Mariah's gonna push for Up Out My Face as the fourth single as it's one of her favorites.

Yeah i ask because the The Dreams version is underappreciated, its simplicity is breathtaking to me. I love both versions. Im just so glad this is getting released even at this point in time.

This should've been sent for adds like... last week. But, I'm hoping for the best! I have faith on this one, contrary to what I felt for IWTKWLI!

The song just never goes anywhere for me. It feels so close but just doesn't get there. I think the songs run on radio will be similar, it will just begin to get some plays and adds and then it will die. Just...no...

I absolutely love this song. This is the first Mariah ballad in a long time that I've really gotten into. Don't get me wrong, I liked For the Record, I Stay in Love, and even Love Story on the last record, but this one just hits me on an emotional level. I relate to the lyrics and I can feel the angst in her voice when she's singing -- especially during the part where she so beautifully sings "and I just wanna hold you, touch you, feel you, be near you, I miss you, baby baby, I'm tired of tryin' to fake through but there's nothin' I can do, boy I can't wait to hate you..."
I agree that a radio edit would be a good idea now that it's a single. I think this song will either flop or go straight to #1. If it catches on, it will spread like wildfire and become her next We Belong Together. I truly believe that it has potential to be her 19th #1, especially if it begins to peak around the holidays. We'll see. I'm no music expert, but I do know that this song has a magic to it, something I haven't felt from her since WBT.

Too soon for this but in my ideal world, a video in the same vein as the Roof would be in order. A great video for this song is needed, plz don waste it on a run of the mill Mimi video. That would make my era personally!!

Nice recovery. She's pulling a PCD "Whatcha Think About That"/"I Hate This Part" switcheroo. Act like the second single was merely for promotional purposes to disguise the fact that it was a bomb waiting to happen. The general public won't care as they never even had a chance to hear it on radio.
In order for anything to have any potential on the charts, they needed to release it quickly to save face from IWTKWLI and to capitalize on the success of "Obsessed". This was the right move.
That said, I've always been skeptical of this song's hit potential. Urban and Rhythmic should show it some love. It won't make much of a dent on Pop unless it crosses over after establishing itself enough on other formats; a la "Obsessed". Pop will not want to touch this though as it relies more on the mood than anything else. Pop is all about the hook and this song is more about the mood. Urban tends to appreciate songs like this and a mood of a song. A hook is slightly less make or break than it is for Pop listeners.
This song does have a way of working its way into your head and staying there for awhile so perhaps if it finds enough success on the core formats (Urban/Rhythmic) then there may be a chance for Pop to latch onto it. I wouldn't hold my breath though.
Either way, this was the best possible move they could have made and if successful, it could give the album a chance to stay on the charts (albeit not high) as opposed to free-falling off completely with no hits on the airwaves to motivate consumers to go out and purchase it.

Dreamlover, you are dead on in regards to the video she needs to make for this song.
She has to come HARD with the video for this. It can't be a half-ass video like Bye Bye or IBLULT. She's got to capture the raw emotion of the song. That's part of what I loved so much about the WBT and DFAU videos. Were they groundbreaking? No, but they were effective in getting the song's messages across in a beautiful way.
I want her to make a video that makes me stop everything I'm doing and pay attention to every word she's singing, one that will make me want to show it to all my friends, and one that will go down as one of her best videos of all time.
