Um but production wise it was still very radio friendly. The same could be said for a numbr of Pink's songs (Sober anyone?) and yet they still perfiormed very well. Let's put it this way, how many songs centering around a violent game where one individual is killed do you know that have been extremely successful? The image of being shot in the head is just a bit darker than the topic discussed within Sober. Sober is a catchy song, though. Still love it. here are some songs on my ipod that are dark that I think were hits: Janie's got a gun and Livin on the edge were big hits for Aerosmith Eminem's Cleaning out my closet and stan were hits. REM everybody's hurts Ludacris-Runaway love...hard for me to listen too. Phil Collins-In the air tonight With that said, I just think RR was not as catchy enough for people to embrace and Because of you does have an element of darkness...slightly but more of a somber mood than anything IMO.

The fact that there is only a handful of the songs out of those you listed (with only two being from the last decade) that were both successful at pop radio and as dark as Russian Roulette speaks volumes. Of course songs with a darker subject matter become successful from time to time, but it is not an everyday occurrence (and definitely not the usual). The song's mood and its pace is what kept radio at bay IMO.

^^ I really want it to. This song is just TOO good. One of my Top 3 Rihanna singles ever. Mine too. I can't believe that this song tanked so fast! A classic example of Brick Wall Syndrome.

RR had the instant death combo of depressing lyrics and gloomy production. A song can succeed with one of the two, but not with both.

Yeah but a catchy hook would have conquered both of those ingredients. I don't care what anyone says...this song flopped first and foremost because it was not the radio friendly material Rihanna is known for.

def quite disappointing and in no way a smash...but it did peak at #9. granted, mostly from sales, but regardless of what people say for or against it, it will forevermore be a top ten hit, however short-lived. she is lucky, though, that hard is taking off and this won't be a "my december" flop era.

There are a lot of serious/sad songs that are huge CHR hits, but I wouldn't call them all dark. This is definitely a very dark song and darker than anything that has hit on CHR in a long time. I don't really find BOY to be a dark song either...just sad, but not really dark. A dark Kelly song is like...Irvine, or Haunted, or Addicted.

^um...thats a flop for an artist of kellys stature. For a new artist or an artist that doesnt have a pop following, sure that would be decent. But for Kelly with the market still being what it was thats a flop. It happens. Shes clearly moved on and everyone else should too. Riri however is nowhere near in the clear yet with this monster flop album.

It's actually gaining points again! Which won't matter when the holiday effects wear off and the song gets purged ???
