Her rise to mainstream eminence changed the scope of her career forever so this upcoming album will be precarious and critical. Space Odyssey is an affirmative indication of the works nonetheless and it seems that she continues to be as adamant as ever.

M.I.A. Album NewsM.I.A's new album will be "a total departure" from her established sound. The Sri Lankan born singer - real name Maya Arulpragasam - has been working with producer Diplo on her third album - which it was announced at the weekend will be released on June 28 in Europe and June 29 in the US - and he promises he has drawn from a well of diverse musical influences to create tracks for the album. Diplo - who collaborated with M.I.A on her breakthrough single 'Paper Planes' - said: "On the new record I've just done for her - which might be the single - I sampled a bunch of gospel-y, old-school, Alabama, weird, Sacred Harp singers. "It's turning into an Animal Collective kind of record, which represents a total departure from what you would expect from her, but that's where her head was at." "She just had a baby so she was on this elated mood. With her it's always sort of random, whatever you think was not going to be productive - that recording ended up being a really shitty demo and then it turned into a big song." US born Diplo also defended his practice of sampling to create records, saying although it upsets some musicians, it helps give the sampled music a new context. He added: "I think everyone who plays an instrument and comes from a real musical background is a bit perturbed by sampling in general. It might be ignorance to begin with - but always, when we sample, I try to be making statements. "I think 'Paper Planes' is a good example because it's a song that represents Maya's attitude. It sampled a Clash record - the goal is to try to reach people and give the song more depth. It's hard to pick up on it, but if you do dig into it, people are like, 'Damn, that's an all-around song now' when they understand the sample source.

This is M.I.A. in a nutshell. I could only dream of being the iconoclast this woman was destined to be from the womb. Beautiful.

Hated it at first, by the end I was ready to put it on repeat. It's exactly what I expected and a complete surprise at the same time. Typical Maya.

Hated it at first, by the end I was ready to put it on repeat. I'm the opposite: I was hooked instantly at the arrival of the crushing drums.

It really is a departure from what she usually does...I'm in love. It's like war in song form.

Excellent video! A grammy nom is in the bag, I think. It's better and more ambitious than the song itself. Wonder if it's inspired by the South Park's 'Ginger Kids' episode.
I do like the song, but I don't think it's something I'd listen to regularly. It's too noisy.

I watched that video. I had to show it to my roommate. We are both traumatized. And people say GaGa is controversial. LOLOLOLOLOOOL IKR. It makes Telephone seem PG. LOL Heh, I also noticed that it's about the same length as Telephone's. I wonder if the video is how they'd always planned it and M.I.A.'s team just used the NME interview to set the stage for comparing and contrasting. I just found it curious that she kept coming back to talking about Gaga without the interviewer's prodding. Or the video is the way it is as a bit of a reaction to and/or a dig at Telephone. 'You wanna use sex/nudity/violence as a social commentary? Here's how you do it!'. Or perhaps I was just over-thinking it. LOL I don't really care about the bitch fights, it's kinda amusing actually LOL, and she did make some valid points. But I do find it a bit hypocritical for M.I.A. to bitch about major labels and their money and how it's better to 'do it yourself' when she herself is on the same major label as Gaga's and a video like this sure as hell needs a major label's money and resources to be made. And her setting herself up as a rebel/revolutionary/street kid/anti-popstar is also a bit of a construct, just in a different way.

YouTube vows to keep pulling the vid due to "gratuitious violence", which I'll assume based on seeing the vid means "we object to the political content".

Hype Williams is directing the video.

I knew born free would be just a little teaser, kind of like bird flu... still an amazing song and definitely is doing its job of getting people talking! I wonder if XXXO is that song about being "down like your internet connection"
