I love how cheap and messy her album covers always are. Part of her appeal, I would imagine. This album will be great. XXXO is driving me insane. I want to play it all the damn time!

I've always had my suspicions about her motives for entering the music industry but that article kinda confirms them AND paints the picture of a shrewd, manipulative woman who is using the music industry for her own agenda. Hey, it works and her music is hot so I need to just stay away from these kinds of articles if I want to continue enjoying her. Otherwise, cynicism WILL take over. This quote from Diplo REALLY had me pressed:
"In the end, Maya is postmodern: she can’t really make music or art that well, but she’s better than anyone at putting crazy ideas into motion. She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants."

Shade overload, complete with personal attacks! “I can’t talk about Gaga anymore,” she said. “All I’ll say is, it’s upsetting when babies say ga-ga now. It used to be innocent. Now, they’re calling her name.”
Maya feels that Gaga is not original, that she mostly borrows from the Abba playbook, and she gets annoyed when Gaga is compared to Madonna. “You can’t really say that Gaga is culturally a change,” Maya said. “Madonna was truly unique.” Gavras nodded. “And Madonna was pretty,” he said. “Pop stars should be pretty.”

GaGa has got these bitches whipped. they just are intimidated of her. GaGa is not in madonna's league. Shes in a league of her own.

Maya seems a little obsessed with GaGa as of late. These attacks are unnecessary. Like Christina, she needs to focus on her own product and quit worrying about GaGa so much.

I feel like it's all on purpose and that Jimmy is pushing this. They both have close relationships with him, so I just find it hard to believe he's perfectly fine with M.I.A. saying these kinds of things about his biggest artist without some kind of other motive.

What an insufferable, pretentious, hypocritical bitch! She's no less gimmicky than, and her persona is as much as a construct as those she bitches about. I've never bought it that she doesn't want/enjoy mainstream success. That is never the case in 19 out of 20. I feel like it's all on purpose and that Jimmy is pushing this. They both have close relationships with him, so I just find it hard to believe he's perfectly fine with M.I.A. saying these kinds of things about his biggest artist without some kind of other motive. Agreed. Either that or she sees too much of herself in Gaga. Or both. It's amusing that she worships and keeps kissing Madonna's ass now that she's a legend. Bet she wouldn't if M were just starting out like Gaga. Gaga is lot more respected now than M was back in the day. Actually all 3 of them probably have a lot in common. They're all shrewd, super-ambitious bitches who go after what they want. Except, well, Gaga doesn't really seem like a bitch, at least not so far.

Lynn Hirschberg's efforts were entirely partisan & attempted to single-handedly debase or altogether do away with every one of M.I.A.'s accomplishments thus far. It's a shame Diplo continued to prove himself a cunt in the meantime but Hirschberg was clearly determined to patronize Maya from the get-go. "Eating a truffle-flavored French fry", really? The objectivity, for a change, presented [at face value] in the article is much appreciated--I think we can all agree on this. Maya's shit does stink, Maya is inconsistent (politically or otherwise); point blank, she fumbles. But she is, after all, A. a human being and B. a musician & not a politician. She may not be rooted in the politics she both discusses and performs but she isn't ignorant to it either. It provides her with expansive lyrical terrain so she then, you know, wouldn't have to bend over backwards to veil the vapidity of her own lyricism.
But now removed from Hirschberg's skewing of the bigger picture, is snubbing Maya 'trending'? I find it both disheartening & hypocritical she (Maya) is now subjected to ample criticism while, oppositely, GaGa is free to bask in her narcissism & fraudulence without any repercussions. Maybe I'm getting a little ahead of myself as this could all very well be a calculated move as both M.I.A. & GaGa are on two sides of the same coin and situated within the machine. In spite of this, I do believe GaGa is given a free pass too often. Maybe it's our expectations of popstars, maybe they (her newfound advocates in journalism) just find her irresistibly charismatic but is anyone willing to face the music?

It provides her with expansive lyrical terrain so she then, you know, wouldn't have to bend over backwards to veil the vapidity of her own lyricism. Huh? Which was it? Was Hirschberg being partisan or was she being objective? If the former, whose side was she on? Were you implying that she was team Gaga? Seriously? And I don’t see how she tried to “do away with every one of MIA accomplishments“; she actually praised her and even compared her to Madonna. The most damning stuff actually did not come from her; they mostly came from people who supposedly knew MIA quite well. So Diplo was being a c**t? Whenever it’s MIA who’s doing the deed, her defenders are always quick to say that she’s just telling it as it is, that she‘s just speaking her mind and that she doesn‘t care what people think of her. Well, if she can dish it, shouldn’t she be able to take it too? Based on her reaction to the article, obviously not, and it turned out she actually did care very much what people think of her. Furthermore, her reaction actually suggested that the article might not be far off the mark at all. She IS a petulant, immature and hypocritical bitch. She ranted on and on about censorship and the loss of freedom and privacy what with the government spying on us, and yet she lost her s**t over a not so complimentary article about herself and pettily put someone’s private number on the net. Yeah that MIA, such a terrorist! That’s what disappoints me the most, her seemingly total lack of self-awareness while self-righteously pointing fingers at others. How is Gaga given a free pass? The ‘originality’ angle has been beaten so often it’s pretty much a dead horse by now. But it doesn’t make it less valid; it’s as valid as that other dead horse, the ’politically simplistic’ criticism for Mia. No, she isn’t a politician, but she based her whole persona and music on being this revolutionary rebel and the cause she champions is no trifling matter. I don’t see why she should not be called out on her more wrong-headed assertions. As for the more recent criticism, she set herself up for it. When you point fingers at others, you sure as hell could not expect to not have them pointed back at you when it turns out that you ain’t no better yourself. Gaga is a narcissist and a fraud? LOL. These people are freaking pop stars, of course they are narcissists; it’s just a matter of degree. As we can see, Mia herself is certainly not slacking in that area LOL. And if Gaga is a fraud, then what do you call pretty much all the other pop stars? what with the formula and trend chasing, songs that sound alike, murky credit-taking, marketing gimmicks, etc. You seem to resent that A. she does not get called out more, and B. she gets more respect relative to most other pop stars. IMO it’s because A. she never claims she’s original and others are no more original than she is. B. simple really, unlike most other pop stars, she composes her own music (see also: Swift, Taylor).
