We might as well just close this thread: it's become clear that every cover Kelly/Carrie/Mariah have ever sung is better than the original.

I'm not gonna mention Idol covers because there are way too many.
Mary J Blige's "One" duet with U2 > U2's original. Amy Winehouse's "Cupid" > Sam Cooke's original.

Anyone who thinks Michael Bolton's "When A Man Loves A Woman" is better than Percy Sledge's -- incomprehensible.
Absolutely, positively not.

"Mad World" - Michael Andrews and Gary Jules reimagine the Tears for Fears classic and own it This. Also Placebo's cover of "Running Up That Hill" adds a little something more to Kate Bush's original.

I thought Taylor wrote Untouchable, after listening to the other version I agree with that.

Anyone who thinks Michael Bolton's "When A Man Loves A Woman" is better than Percy Sledge's -- incomprehensible. Music snobbery. Percy Sledge sounded like a constipated frog. I don't care if he sang it first. ;)

I like Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind" better than the original by Brenda Lee.

I like Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind" better than the original by Brenda Lee. I actually prefer the Pet Shop Boys version over both...

MJ's Come Together >>>> Beatles Come Together Not even close. Now if you had said Areosmith's version... Shut. Up. None of the Beatles were anything special vocally. Average, the whole lot of them. So sick of people prasing their generic voices. They wrote great songs, and delivered them to the best of their (limited) abilities. Covers of their songs beat the originals at least 50% of the time. And this is coming from someone who used to be obsessed with them. Anyway, my favorite version is sung by Joe Croker from the Across the Universe movie. Oh, and the Aerosmith version sucks ass. So overrated.

So overrated. Overrated but better than MJs. I don't think that song is all that great at all, but I don't like MJs interpretation of it. I like the Beatles version best, followed by Aero, then MJ, then the god-awful Across the Universe one.

So overrated. What a mature post. I can't believe I'm having to make the point that vocal ability is subjective. I'd prefer John Lennon's heart wrenching emotion on "Jealous Guy" over all of Michael Jackson's post-1983 robotic adlibs and over-pronunciation any day. You're right that there are loads of great covers of Beatles songs out there, and the very reason that there are is because they wrote so many great songs. If you have thousands upon thousands of covers of your songs then of course there are going to be some fantastic ones. Joe Cocker (lol at 'Croker') does indeed do some fantastic ones, my favourite being "With A Little Help From My Friends". The point is, just because none of the Beatles have twelve octave ranges doesn't mean they're bad vocalists. Just because they didn't have flawless whistle ranges it doesn't mean they didn't have great emotional connection and soul.

How about the Jacksons' 1975 hit "Forever Came Today" (#6 R&B), a remake of Diana Ross' 1968 version (#28 pop, #17 R&B), taking advantage of the disco era.
Interestingly enough, neither Mary Wilson nor Cindy Birdsong were part of Diana Ross' recording (a Motown session background group did the backing vocals), and this was the last song written for Motown by Brian Holland, LaMont Dozier and Eddie Holland.
The 1975 hit was the brothers' last top-10 R&B hit for Motown, on their last album for Motown (Moving Violation). and their last as the Jackson 5ive, before moving to CBS (now Sony) Records.

Jackson 5 "Who's Loving You?" (Smokey Robinson) Whitney Houston "I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton) Sinead O Connor "Nothing Compares To You" (Prince) Aretha Franklin "Respect" (Otis Redding) Dixie Chicks "Landslid" (Fleetwood Mac) Willie Neilson "Always On My Mind" (Brenda Lee)
And NO NO NO: Beyonce - At Last... NO, She took to soul out of that song Mariah/Luther - Endless Love... The original is subtle and beautifully sung, and just magical Mary J Blige - I'm Going Down... The original is just as emotional but is also much more pleasant sounding.
