Praying for Time - Carrie Underwood > George Michael Without You - Mariah Carey > Nilson/Badfinger George Michaels version has more feeling and soul to it.

The Fray's Heartless and Seether's Careless Whisper. Kris Allens version of Heartless is the best. I like the Seether version of Careless, but would still rather hear George Michael.

The original was sung by Laura Branigan. actually Air Supply recorded and released it before Laura Branigan Jennifer Rush was the original artist for that song before all of them. I think Celine's is the best version. I do like Air Supply and Laura Branigan's versions too.

Bjork's version of "It's Oh So Quiet". I remember reading on the interwebs that the original was from the 50's.

I believe Flatt & Scruggs are the original artists of "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke", and while they're version is quite excellent, it'll always be a Vern Gosdin song to my ears.

I think that I would say Tracey Ullman's cover of the Kirsty MacColl song "They Don't Know" is better than the original. It's such a cute song, and while Kirsty has a much better voice (she even provides backing vocals on this version that sometimes overtake Tracey's lead vocals), I just think Tracey Ullman's cute and sweet voice fits the song really well. The production is also better, and Kirsty kind of sounds bored singing the song (normally Kirsty has no trouble bringing emotion to her tracks, so I don't know what it is about this one. Maybe because it was her first? Or maybe I was just so used to Tracey's when I finally heard the original?). It almost sounds as if Kirsty's version was merely a demo meant for Tracey, even though that wasn't the case.

This may have been mentioned earlier in the thread but "Mad World" by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules (originally by Tears For Fears) is a prime example of taking an already great song and making it better. So haunting, and it fits perfectly in Donnie Darko.

I couldn't stand this song and I thought it was a combination of One Direction and the song itself, but after hearing this I realized it's really just One Direction. Their vocals do nothing for me and lack depth. This version made me appreciate the song itself because the vocals highlight the lyrics and arrangement, which I initially thought were crap so that makes it a great cover.
