"I Told You So" - Carrie Underwood over Randy Travis's version (although their version together is incredible!)

^ Agreed. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by Elton John > the original by the Beatles Totally disagree. IMO you can't beat Lennon's vocal on the original. Although I do love Elton's version too.

Praying for Time - Carrie Underwood > George Michael Without You - Mariah Carey > Nilson/Badfinger That's gonna be a triple NO vote from me. I have a list of these, but I'll just name a few: "I Hope You Dance" - Ronan Keating is better than Womack and co. "Here, There, and Everywhere" - Emmylou Harris takes a great Beatles song and improves it. "Mad World" - Michael Andrews and Gary Jules reimagine the Tears for Fears classic and own it "We Can Work It Out" - I love the original version by The Beatles, but Stevie Wonder's funked-up arrangement takes it to another level. Oh, and I saw a mention of Jamie Cullum, so: "Frontin'." Yeah, I went there.

Praying for Time - Carrie Underwood > George Michael Without You - Mariah Carey > Nilson/Badfinger IMO Mariah didn't add anything more to Nilsson's version of "Without You" to improve it anymore than she did more recently to Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is." And since IMO, Badfinger's original version is superior to Nilsson's remake, clearly Mariah's version isn't even in the running.

I think I like Ronan's version of 'When You Say Nothing At All' over Alison Krauss'.
And Dixie Chicks' 'Landslide' I think adds much needed life to the Fleetwood Mac version.

Oh, and I saw a mention of Jamie Cullum, so: "Frontin'." Yeah, I went there. I also prefer Ronan's rendition of IHYD; he's surprisingly adept at singing country-influenced ballads (the aforementioned WYSNAA, "If Tomorrow Never Comes", etc.), especially given his background as a boyband member. I have never heard Emmylou's take on that Beatles tune, which btw is one of my favorites from them. Thanks for the heads-up, I'd definitely look into it. Oh, and yes, Jamie's "Frontin'" is better than the original. Occasionally, depending on my mood, I even think he tackles "High And Dry" better than Radiohead themselves. :o

The Carrie **people who like someone I don't so I resort to namecalling because it makes me feel superior** have taken over this thread I'm the furthest thing from a Carrie stan, I think her version of Praying for Time is better than the original, she puts so much more emotion in it...imo...

Selena "Fotos Y Recuerdos" cover of The Pretenders "Back on the Chain Gang" she re-did the lyrics but kept part of the hook.
Selena "Last Dance" and the rest of her "Disco Medley" live at the 1995 Houston Astrodome
Carrie Underwood "I Told You So", "I'll Stand By You"
Katy Perry's "Use Your Love"
I'm sure there's tons more so I'll edit this later.

The Beatles' Twist and Shout >>>>>>> The Isley Brothers The Isley Brothers version is a remake too. If you listen to the original, you realize The Beatles owe a great debt to the Isleys for basically supplying them with a viable arrangement for a song that did not stand out as hit material.

Michael Bolton's When A Man Loves A Woman >>>>>>>>>> Percy Sledge's version www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20315945_7,00.html I think I'll take EW's side on this. I have two more: "Spit On A Stranger": Nickel Creek > Pavement "Lying To The Moon": Trisha Yearwood > Matraca Berg (heck, even Berg herself thinks so)

Moulin Rouge version of "Your Song" (sung by Ewan McGregor) > Elton John's (which I also dearly love)
The theatrical makeover of the song just makes it so big, brassy, and romantic.

Michael Bolton's When A Man Loves A Woman >>>>>>>>>> Percy Sledge's version www.ew.com/ew/gallery/0,,20315945_7,00.html I think I'll take EW's side on this. Seriously... Michael Bolton should be nowhere near that list. He gets so much bashing and hate, I don't know why. His voice is amazing, and his music is so soulful and romantic. He caters to the ladies, and I love it. He sang this shit outta that song. People just always like the old over the new. Percy Sledge sounded like a constipated frog. He didn't even write the damn song, so the music snobbery is beyond me.
