Holiday Wishes from ShaniaMerry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! I've been in the North Country of Ontario, Canada and, after a crazy drive through a snowstorm to get here, I finally made it North for the holidays to take in the spirit of a great, white Christmas. What would normally be a two-and-a-half hour drive took over seven hours with several accidents along the way. We experienced dead stops of long waits during whiteouts. Miles of vehicles were lined up bumper to bumper, blanketed in snow from hours of sitting and waiting for news of what was happening up ahead. Very scary driving conditions, and I really felt lucky to have made it safely in the end. It was centimeter after centimeter of snow falling for hours on end. Even we Northerners can only cope with so much snow all at once. I have personally never seen such a crisis just over falling snow, but this snowfall was an exception. We normally cope pretty well, and falling snow is just a part of another winter day, but this storm was a doozy! Many people were running out of gas on the highway. It was a chilly night so it was very uncomfortable and actually dangerous for anyone not prepared to spend the night in their vehicle without heat, which many had to do in the end. I couldn't help thinking of anyone with children onboard and how they must have coped - no washrooms, no emergency vehicle access without painstaking effort, and even when emergency support made it out, it was slow. Not a good night to have an emergency. In fact, during one of our dead stops of four hours, we only saw one tow truck make it through. We were very lucky that we had a full tank of gas, a heavy, sturdy vehicle and some groceries in the back. I've spent years driving these same roads in bad weather in cars with no front or four-wheel drive, only enough gas to get from A to B and a lot of wishful thinking and luck to get me safely where I was going. Phew, this trip was a reminder of all those years coping with winter drives in the North. For most of the ride this time going North, I was pretty scared since our vehicle was sandwiched between a transport truck in front of and behind us. It's very dangerous to try to pull off an unplowed, unsalted, unsanded, snow-covered road with whiteout conditions unless you are really able to slow down to pullover. With an 18-wheeler not far behind who can barely see you, slowing down is not a good idea. Also, we were reduced to one narrow lane, and all we could see were the taillights of the vehicle in front of us if we stayed right on him. So, too close for comfort yet not able to stay back for risk of losing our visual reference for direction and not being able to pull over. I wasn't driving but was squirming in my seat, anxious and nervous. There was no point saying much and other than keeping my eyes strained on the truck ahead and any other visual reference possible, there was nothing I could do as a passenger. So, I decided to try to keep myself preoccupied and calm by texting Fred and Eja, keeping my thoughts off a situation I couldn't control. I was aware of the probability of our car going out of control and wanted to make sure I touched base in case that actually did happen. I know too well all about the risks on these roads in bad weather so my concerns were warranted. What a hairy night! Since I finally arrived North, I've enjoyed some exciting, local hockey games (which made my voice raspy from all the yelling and cheering for our team), some fun in the snow with the kids, more dangerous driving on snowy, windy, winter roads with deer popping up all over the place, lots of seasonal music (Michael Buble's "Let it Snow" is this year's favorite), family and friends around the bonfire, being at the rinks drinking hot chocolate, and then more fun in the snow. We got lots of the white stuff early this year so have been taking advantage of it. It's a pain to shovel but great news for the Olympic games to have such a good base for the outdoor sports and, just for recreational time, makes for great tobogganing, snow fights and amazing scenery. Enjoy the holidays wherever you are, and I look forward to touching base again with you all in the New Year! Lots of exciting things to report and share with you in early 2010 so I will be in touch with more news soon. Lots of peace and love to you ‘til then, Shania

Apparently, Jamey Johnson has recorded a 7-minute long music video for "The High Cost of Living" Kind of late for that since "High Cost Of Living" peaked on the charts several months ago. There hasn't been anything about a new album since "My Way To You" charted as a single but not from "That Lonesome Song" or him recording a new album for that matter. Any word if they're done releasing anything from that album? Is "My Way To You" considered a single only since there is no word about it coming from a new album?

Sooooo bummed that HCOL and MWTY both flopped....even though HCOL is Grammy nominated. Also, I heard ''Fruitcake Makes me Puke'' by Bill Engvall on radio.....worst christmas song ever.IMO

"Guinevere" was supposed to be the follow-up to "Always The Love Songs", but was replaced by "Radio Waves" at the last minute.

I like the "Trailer" it's my favorite song of theirs so I hope Universal South or Showdog-Universal(?) gets them another hit with this one, "Radio Waves" should've been a hit...

^It's on youtube along with Cold as You and a Miranda song. I guess Kelly does little preshows for her fan as part of her meet and greets. Someone just happened to sneak a camera in and recorded all the material cover and new song wise when they weren't suppose to.

I'm not sure if this was already posted but Kellie Coffey has a new EP available on iTunes (and other download stores). It was released November 5, 2009. It's listed under 'Pop' for some crazy reason.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be a while until we get some new music from Rissi Palmer :( Here is something she just posted on her facebook: Dear Friends, I hope this message finds you all happy and blessed. Happy New Year!!! I've always loved the concept of a new year because words like change and growth come to mind. 2010 is exactly that for me. Many of you have inquired about when I will tour or put out new music. I spent this last year focused on making business and personal changes that were very necessary to me and my career. One major change is that I am no longer signed to a record label. I am also in the process of changing the team around me. In the midst of all of this I have been making new music and look forward to sharing it with you all soon. As I pursue new roads and endeavors, it is my wish that you, my friends, and I stay in contact and dialogue as we've been for the past few years, so I want to let you know that I am no longer reading, posting on, or affiliated with www.rissipalmer.com and that I will be making changes to my myspace music page. In the very near future there will be a new official website. Facebook and Twitter have been my personal pages all along so no changes will be made there. I want you to know that it was God, family, and you that held me together through some very rough times with your kind words and thoughts and I appreciate it more than I could ever express. This is a time of excitement, a little fear (the good kind), and hard work. I look forward to sharing my journey with you and hearing your thoughts and feedback a long the way. 10 is the number of restoration in the Bible and I'm looking forward to seeing what God has in store for this year... God bless and thank you again, Rissi

Jon Caramanica of the NY Times writes an article in which he tries to sum up country music's decade. Caramanica derides the genre for not being as comprehensively ageist when it comes to its fans and its core artists as other genres, while making some valid points about the genre's resistance to change and non-conformity (the treatment of the Dixie Chicks being the most shameful example, although Caramanica ignores that the Dixie Chicks more or less rejected country radio by the time Taking the Long Way came out, turning down radio interview offers even by friendly country radio stations). It looks to me like he cherry-picked from Billboard's decade lists in identifying the genre's biggest stars and drawing a picture of the genre from them. But the result is ignoring the emergence of acts like Lady Antebellum, which learned the value of online marketing early (something reflected in "Need You Now"'s digital sales), or the fact that even Lee Ann Womack tweets and engages in online marketing, though it hasn't proven to be much of a sales booster for her. I also think he conflates changing marketing techniques (something that is dependent on each act's assessment of how best to reach and expand his/her/their existing fanbase) with real "stylistic innovation," which I take as having something to do with...what's that called again?...the music. Anyway, here is the article: Nashville Inches, Ever So Grudgingly, Into the Future By JON CARAMANICA
THE spot atop the final country music singles chart of the 2000s was held by a woman who shoehorned her way into Nashville with personal subject matter, a plucky, can-do attitude and a refusal to fail.
Taylor Swift? Nope. Try Reba McEntire.
“Consider Me Gone” was Ms. McEntire’s 34th trip to the top of the chart in 26 years, proof of not just her appeal and resilience, but also of Nashville’s enduring pension plan for its cherished acts.
The story of country music in the last 10 years, one of its most turbulent and provocative periods, was of a genre under attack from within. Early in the decade came the fear that country would go irretrievably pop, courtesy of Shania Twain, Faith Hill and Lee Ann Womack. A few years later the rabble-rousing Muzik Mafia, with acts like Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich, arrived as a rejoinder to the music’s increasing sheen. And finally came a youth flank attack: via “American Idol” there was Carrie Underwood, and via the Internet generation, Taylor Swift.
And yet what these outsiders really demonstrated was the resilience of Nashville. Organized, successful, lumbering, stubborn: Music Row is the last vestige of the record industry as it used to be. To each of these border threats, the city has stood up — remained seated, really — and held its ground, either stymieing or assimilating. The genre’s top female stars retreated from blatant pop crossover, the Muzik Mafia was a team of classicists in outlaw clothing, and Ms. Underwood was a country star in the old mold, after all.
And so the city’s oligarchy remained more or less intact. There’s been little turnover in its star pool; many of the genre’s top-selling acts — George Strait, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw — have been releasing albums for 15 years or more.
According to Nielsen BDS, which measures radio play, the most-played artist this decade, in any format, was Mr. McGraw; 8 of the top 10 are country singers, all men or all-male groups. According to Billboard the top country act of the decade was Mr. Keith, who has evolved from angry fire starter to lumpy jingoist to entrenched outlaw to unexpectedly smooth lover man, but never left the limelight. Until Sugarland unseated them in 2007, Brooks & Dunn won Vocal Duo of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards for 15 years running, save one.
As a result country has been the most commercially significant genre with the smallest amount of stylistic innovation. In addition it’s been particularly slow on the uptake with digital and social media, making it less accessible to younger audiences, and more deaf to their desires.
Ms. Swift may be the biggest country star of the moment, and one of the most significant pop acts of recent years, but her Nashville success is always marked with an asterisk. She’s been accepted, even winning Entertainer of the Year at last year’s CMAs, but brute force helped: numbers talk.
Still, even they’re no guarantee. No situation has revealed Nashville’s self-preservation instinct more than the case of the Dixie Chicks, once the town’s favored daughters: one of the few country acts with two diamond-certified albums, for 10 million copies shipped, and winners of the 2000 Entertainer of the Year award.
But following some lippy remarks about President George W. Bush, followed by a tug-of-dogmas with Mr. Keith, then country music’s center of moral and political gravity, the Chicks were all but excommunicated. By 2006, when they released “Taking the Long Way,” they’d become, in essence, an extremely famous alt-country act; country radio largely ignored them, and their sales dropped by about two-thirds. It felt like a warning shot to upstarts of any kind: Thank you for coming, Nashville will neutralize you now.

The following was posted on the Official Shania Twain site on January 2, 2010. Happy New Year from ShaniaHappy New Year everyone!!! I hope you were able to bring in the new year with joy and peace. I spent my New Year’s Eve with family in Timmins, and there is no better way to bring in the new year than with the people you love. Yesterday we all enjoyed a nature ride to see some moose close-up. I’ve seen many moose in my life and several of them up close but only because they’d been hunted and of course, already dead. So it was amazing to be able to actually touch one that was still alive. Moose have a docile nature when it’s not mating season, and it was such a fantastic experience for both Eja and I to stand with this amazing creature. The moose in this picture is a young cow named Savanna. She will get quite a bit taller once fully grown but is already pretty big even at only three years old. I wish you all lots of love and happiness in 2010, and I look forward to staying in touch over the months to come. All my love, Shania Click Here for a NEW Large photo of Shania Twain with Savanna.

The singer donated her Olympic torch and clothing to the centre in Timmins, Ont., on Saturday. Twain says one addition makes her torch unique - she put hockey tape on the base of her torch so she wouldn't drop it. Twain carried the Olympic torch through Timmins on New Year's Day. She said every time she visits the centre she's moved by the fact she's able to do a small part to try to represent what it is for a small town girl to come from Timmins and live out her dreams. On Eli Young Bands website it says that the Guinevere video was just a present to their fans. So I doubt that it's the new single.

Good interview from Rascal Flatts courtesy of the Tennessean. blogs.tennessean.com/tunein/2010/01/02/rascal-flatts-answer-6-questions-about-10-years-in-country-music/Highlights from the interview: The reason why they didn't do "Why" on the CMA Awards is that they didn't want to do a heavy song on the show. They aren't mad at the CMA's for shutting them out of anything. Jay DeMarcus wants them to do a classic country album where they redo some of the songs that them and their parents listened to growing up. DeMarcus jokingly wants to do a polka album. Huge tour for the summer of 2010. They aren't breaking up. All 3 need to have a huge image change as it looks in the picture of them in the interview. They are getting close to 40 and they are dressing like they are in college.
