From Ryan's interview, I like this the most: "I was like, oh, thank you. I mean, I'm looking at your song right now and it's #1 for the fourth week on Hot AC, so I'm sorry that I helped with that." "Her album just got nominated for Pop Album Of The Year, and I like to think I contributed somewhat with that." She didn't do anything bad at all. She was given a track, wrote lyrics to it, and sang to it. I'm sure a lot of struggling singers out there would have appreciated the recycled sound that has turned into a pretty big hit. Get over it. He clearly contributed to the album in a big way, enough to do his part and get it nominated for Pop Album of the Year. I'll take this any day than have KC flop with terrible beats a la MD (Sorry, love the album and even Sober, but that track should have never been released as a single). That's the problem! It gets old hearing the same song over again and again. If Kelly started doing that (I know she won't) then I would no longer buy her music. No, you wouldn't. But I would. And based on the reaction for MLWSWY and AG (both recycled sounds), so would millions of people. If only she were a business woman. I would rather rather listen to an orginal song (Sober/Maybe) and have it flop than a song that sounds like another song (Already Gone/Halo/Happy/Secrets/That Alcia Keys song) and have it be a hit, but that's just me. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Sober and Maybe. Maybe is in the top 5 of my all time favorite Kelly songs. But what's the point of creating those songs if no one will ever hear them? As a fan, it makes me super proud to turn on the radio and hear Kelly's songs or go out for a night and hear Kelly in the clubs. It just cheers me up to hear KC music anywhere else other than just my iPod.

I'll update it to say Grammy nominated once the new year hits. I figure we should show off AG's #1 status for a little longer.

The bonus tracks for AIEW are so superior to the ones from MD. Sober, Maybe, Irvine, and Chivas are better than all of AIEW. It's like, insane how much better they are lol. this

I'm sure a lot of struggling singers out there would have appreciated the recycled sound that has turned into a pretty big hit. But Kelly's not a struggling singer. She's a huge pop star--doesn't she deserve something better than a recycled sound, hit or not? And beyond that, struggling singers may want a hit, but I'm sure plenty have enough integrity and passion for music and what they do that they'd rather get a hit with a sound that isn't recycled.

Just because a fan wants a certain type of career for Kelly, it doesn't mean she is wrong for wanting to steer the course of her own life. Her fans are free to move on to someone else if they don't agree with her decisions. Constantly whining about her appearance or her professional choices doesn't do anyone any good. There's more to music than just charts and sales; not every artist is going to base their entire existence on those pursuits.

The Best Songs Of 2009, In Bigger Than The Sound17. Kelly Clarkson: "I Do Not Hook Up" Originally written for Katy Perry, it's probably a good thing she passed on it, since I can't imagine anyone other than Clarkson doing it justice. It's breakneck electro-pop with a big, rushing chorus and vocal fireworks galore. The best Kelly Clarkson song in years, from the best Kelly Clarkson album in years (All I Ever Wanted). :o We all win, even Katy Perry. www.mtv.com/news/articles/1627865/20091208/jay_z.jhtml________________________________________________________________________ Glee: The Music, Vol. 2 ReviewThe latest soundtrack for the hit Fox series isn't a show-stopper. by Brian Linder The best is saved for last as the cast and Lea Michele close the album with a raucous version of Kelly Clarkson's ridiculously catchy "My Life Would Suck Without You." Just try not to crack a smile. music.ign.com/articles/105/1053108p1.html_________________________________________________________________ Eminem, Beatles, Shakira top decade-end sales listAs for digital music? Shakira “Hips Don’t Lie” is the decade’s most-streamed track by nearly double numbers, with 85.3 million online plays, followed by Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You,” at 43.5 million, and Chris Brown’s “Run It!” :o music-mix.ew.com/2009/12/08/best-selling-albums-of-decade-eminem-beatles/by Leah Greenblatt __________________________________________________________________ 'Idols' star to support KellyWed, 09 Dec 2009 10:44 Joint Winner of South African 'Idols' 2009 Jason Hartman has been chosen to support 'American Idol' Kelly Clarkson during her South African leg of her 'All I Ever Wanted' global tour powered by 5FM. Locally, the tour starts on Friday 12th March at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, before moving into the ICC Durban Arena on Sunday 14th March and finally Cape Town at the Grand Arena, GrandWest on Wednesday 17th March 2010. 'Idols' fans already know a large part of Jason Hartman's musical gifts: the 29-year-old made such an impression with his singing and performing that in May 2009, he was named the co-winner of this year's incarnation of the global talent search. But 'Idols' only gave a small window into Hartman's dazzling array of talents — which together make him as exciting an artist as any who have emerged out of South Africa's five 'Idols' seasons. Jason's debut album 'On The Run' is a 13-track album which he wrote himself and played many of the instruments on the record and music industry insiders believe this is just the beginning for this super talented South African Idol. Kelly Clarkson was the first to prove that winning 'Idols' can catapult a music career to world-wide success. She has sold more than 20 million albums since her 2002 'American Idol' debut. Her current 'All I Ever Wanted' release shattered records, with the lead single 'My Life Would Suck Without You'. The song earned Clarkson her first #1 single in the UK. Concert attendees can expect to hear the latest hits from the tour's namesake album, along with her signature pop anthems such as 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Because of You'. Jason is extremely excited to support Kelly. "It's a great honour to be given this opportunity," he said. "I think that Kelly is a phenomenal performer and I'm really looking forward to touring with her on her first visit to our beautiful country South Africa." I'm liking that Kelly isn't restricted to the same songs. Sure, "Since U Been Gone" and "My Life Would Suck Without You" may get mentioned for decade and year lists respectively a bit more, but it's good to see other songs such as "Never Again", "I Do Not Hook Up" and even "Behind These Hazel Eyes" get a few mentions too.
Show me a list with "Sober" and/or "Already Gone" and I'd be as happy as a fat kid in a free candy store.

Each and every fan has a right to bring up anything they would like, whether positive or negative, and while it's relevant to the album, including chart positions and sales. This is not the express. You don't have to agree with her behavior to be a fan of her voice.

I have to say yeah to this as well....I would have to list BA number 3 on my list now...but the album is just a seamless, easy flowing pop album. And yowza at that Ryan Tedder interview....he is saying some pretty harsh things there...but I have to say, Kelly did start this one, LOL! JK...I agree with Kelly in the matter. I just hope it goes away for Kelly....so far he is the only person I have heard ever say things remotely bad about Kelly. Funny about the part he said that "she didn't know what she was talking about" and that someone was bending her ear.......what Kelly isn't intelligent enough?? Just sillyness and sounds like someone trying to cover his ass IMO.

I agree. Nothing else on this album is going to get airplay on Country, and it's probably fairly cheap to promote a single just to the Country format, so I don't see a downside in releasing it to Country radio even if she's releasing a different song at the same time on Pop. If it turned out to be a smash on Country, you could always cross it over later to Pop/Hot AC/AC.

In a week of large drops due to after thanksgiving/black friday week, KELLY HANGS ON!!! Her album droped 19% (i was expecting such a larger number) not too shabby since she jumped up 100+% last week 8.573 (774.251) and cheer up peeps! MD sold only 1.000 copies a week at this point and had only 757K sold (and may i add this was after the holidays) The album will sell an estimate 40-50K by the time the large sales are done guranteeing the album 800.000 copies (more then MD as far as i can tell)..My guess is that this time next year AIEW will be cert Platinum with over 920K sold...Thats my prediction

A platinum certification would be very gratifying. Kelly may not be an album-sales monster the way she was with Thankful and Breakaway, but she's certainly made RCA plenty of money in 2009.
Digital album sales:
So, if I read that correctly, about 21% of AIEW's US album sales have been digital. Wonder how that % compares to other major artists. If it's unusually high, that would support the theory of some folks on the Express that Kelly's been suffering from insufficient shipment and promotion of her physical CDs, especially to Wal-Mart.

I'll answer my own question. 24 albums have sold 700,000 or more copies this year in the US, if you leave out the Michael Jackson CDs, the "Now" collections and Miley Cyrus' EP. Here is the % of digital sales for each of those: Artist | Album | Sales | Digital | % | Taylor Swift | Fearless | 2,398,203 | 300,968 | 12.5% | Miley Cyrus | Hannah Montana Sdtrk | 1,689,521 | 164,467 | 9.7% | Lady Gaga | Fame | 1,659,870 | 352,920 | 21.3% | Eminem | Relapse | 1,533,184 | 244,365 | 15.9% | Black Eyed Peas | The END | 1,440,895 | 270,236 | 18.8% | Jay-Z | Blueprint | 1,337,192 | 277,338 | 20.7% | Kings of Leon | Only by the Night | 1,254,486 | 397,862 | 31.7% | Nickelback | Dark Horse | 1,253,101 | 143,695 | 11.5% | Various | Twilight Sdtrk | 1,201,687 | 332,947 | 27.7% | Beyonce | I am Sasha Fierce | 1,074,489 | 93,859 | 8.7% | Zac Brown Band | Foundation | 1,062,359 | 132,045 | 12.4% | Rascal Flatts | Unstoppable | 1,049,311 | 141,015 | 13.4% | U2 | No Line on the Horizon | 1,042,642 | 257,831 | 24.7% | Dave Matthews Band | Big Whiskey | 939,232 | 276,323 | 29.4% | Maxwell | Blacksummers' Night | 884,549 | 84,216 | 9.5% | Green Day | 21st Century B-down | 858,516 | 196,108 | 22.8% | Whitney Houston | I Look To You | 818,636 | 78,442 | 9.6% | Jason Aldean | Wide Open | 787,908 | 65,394 | 8.3% | Daughtry | Leave This Town | 766,500 | 137,090 | 17.9% | Kelly Clarkson | All I Ever Wanted | 765,677 | 164,223 | 21.4% | Michael Buble | Crazy Love | 746,358 | 98,808 | 13.2% | The Fray | Epic | 742,310 | 251,105 | 33.8% | P!nk | Funhouse | 722,713 | 129,958 | 18.0% | Darius Rucker | Learn to Live | 722,239 | 87,980 | 12.2% |
Susan Boyle was #25 on the albums list but isn't in the top 100 digital sellers, while Owl City is 12th in digital sales (168,408) but not in the top 50 album sellers, meaning well over a third of his album sales have been digital. Kelly's digital sales are on the high end but not at the top of the range. There's probably a bunch of factors at work here - it seems the lower digital sales % are for country albums and albums that have been out a while or were by established artists and, in general, albums people knew they were going to buy, while newer artists (Gaga, Kings of Leon) and artists whose sales are single-driven (Kelly, Gaga) are more likely to sell digitally after people buy a song or two. But then, that doesn't explain why so many people bought U2's or Dave Mathews' albums digitally. Also, it seems that older buyers (Whitney, Susan Boyle) and very young ones (Miley) are more lilkely to own the CD rather than buy on iTunes.

Those factors seem on target, but you also have to consider the fact that AIEW was on sale for a few weeks for $7.99 on iTunes, and in general, unless there's a sale at Best Buy or something, digital sales are still the cheapest way to go. I'd say maybe the market Kelly has sold to this era is more so to blame. Her market is probably the most influenced by the price (and convenience) difference of digital vs. retail (and on a side note, legal vs. illegal). They're not really teeny-boppers whose parents buy them everything and thus don't care about the price, and she's not selling to older folks like those who bought Susan Boyle and don't really know how to download LOL.
