The 2009 chart year concludes this week with a total of 136 songs debuting in the top 40 over the course of the year.
This makes 2009 the fifth year in a row with 140 or fewer top-40 debuts. This has only happened ten times in CHR/Pop chart history, half of which have been the past five years. (The others were a five-year streak from 1995 to 1999.) On the bright side, the number of debuts per year has now increased, albeit slightly, three years in a row.
Here's a list of the number of top 40 debuts by year...
1989: 205 Top 40 Debuts 1990: 200 Top 40 Debuts 1991: 209 Top 40 Debuts 1992: 209 Top 40 Debuts 1993: 199 Top 40 Debuts 1994: 162 Top 40 Debuts 1995: 139 Top 40 Debuts 1996: 140 Top 40 Debuts 1997: 133 Top 40 Debuts 1998: 127 Top 40 Debuts 1999: 132 Top 40 Debuts 2000: 145 Top 40 Debuts 2001: 144 Top 40 Debuts 2002: 150 Top 40 Debuts 2003: 142 Top 40 Debuts 2004: 147 Top 40 Debuts 2005: 135 Top 40 Debuts 2006: 131 Top 40 Debuts 2007: 132 Top 40 Debuts 2008: 135 Top 40 Debuts 2009: 136 Top 40 Debuts

So basically, when the chart went to PPW, the number of top 40 debuts simply went down than earlier.
Since 1995, the mean number of top 40 debuts is 137 (I rounded down) and the standard deviation is 6 (again rounded down). If I include 1994 in the mix (which had 3-4 months of pre-PPW), then the mean is 139 and the standard deviation is 8.

What were the eight songs to reach #1 in 1993 and how long did each one stay on top?

Pop Radio Top 20 uses Billboard's top 40 chart instead of R&R for 1993 and early 1994. I don't know of a source that uses the R&R charts from that period, but according to the old Countdown Collector site there were 15 #1 songs in 1993 and 12 #1s in 1994 according to R&R.

^Yeah the page with 8 #1s for 1993 is based off Billboard's Airplay Radio Monitor cause Two Princes peaked at #2 in R&R (which was still using station playlists at the time)
