...the chart methodology of the early 1980's was used. Since radio playlists were used instead of actual spins, the older songs on the chart would drop much faster which made the Top 40 countdown with Casey Kasem much fresher. Also, sales were taken into account in a subtle way...
Here is what the current Mediabase chart would probably look like using the old AT40/Billboard methodology:
1. TIK TOK - Kesha 2. REPLAY - Iyaz 3. FIREFLIES - Owl City 4. BAD ROMANCE - Lady Gaga 5. WHATCHA SAY - Jason Derulo 6. EMPIRE STATE OF MIND - Jay Z feat Alicia Keys 7. SEXY CHICK - David Guetta feat Akon 8. EVACUATE THE DANCEFLOOR - Cascada 9. 3 - Britney Spears 10. DO YOU REMEMBER - Jay Sean f Sean Paul & Lil Jon 11. FIFTEEN - Taylor Swift 12. TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE - Boys Like Girls 13. ACCORDING TO YOU - Orianthi 14. HARD - Rihanna feat Jeezy 15. IF YOU ONLY KNEW - Shinedown 16. GIVE IT UP TO ME - Shakira 17. PAPARAZZI - Lady Gaga 18. ONE LESS LONELY GIRL - Justin Bieber 19. FOREVER - Drake, Kayne, Lil Wayne & Eminem 20. NEVER GONNA BE ALONE - Nickelback 21. HEAVEN CAN WAIT - We the Kings 22. LIVE LIKE WE'RE DYING - Kris Allen 23. LIFE AFTER YOU - Daughtry 24. TELEPHONE - Lady Gaga f/ Beyonce 25. ALL THE RIGHT MOVES - OneRepublic 26. RAIN - Creed 27. PARTY IN THE U.S.A. - Miley Cyrus 28. BREAKEVEN - The Script 29. HOT MESS - Cobra Starship 30. CARRY OUT - Timbaland f/ Justin Timberlake (DEBUT SONG) 31. SMILE - Uncle Kracker 32. SEX ON FIRE - Kings of Leon 33. GANSTA LUV - Snoop Dogg f/the Dream 34. WHATAYA WANT FROM ME - Adam Lambert 35. HEARTBREAK WARFARE - John Mayer 36. SHUT IT DOWN - PITBULL f/Akon 37. IN MY HEAD - Jason Derulo (DEBUT SONG) 38. TIE ME DOWN - New Boys f/ Ray J (DEBUT SONG) 39. UPRISING - Muse 40. ALREADY GONE - Kelly Clarkson

On the one hand, this chart is much fresher, but on the other hand..."Tik Tok" is #1.

UM NO, WRONG, FALSE. I don't care how "fresh" this chart is Kelly should be #1 over Herpe$ha.

Is Casey Kasem a VJ from MTV from the late 90's? No, he was the voice of Shaggy from Scooby Doo and also the voice of Alexander from Josie & The Pussycat (Dolls).

Kelly fans are so hateful. Maybe they are insecure about their own weight? Ke$ha is skinny, and that fact probably carries a lot of gravity with people who have a lot of mass to move around. Don't be jealous Kelly fans, there's still room on the Ke$ha bandwagon.

Kesha's bandwagon is nailed together poorly with rusty nails that might cause tetanus or syphalis so I will keep my fat ass in Camp Kelly mkay?

I even like 'TiK ToK,' therefore your statement = FAIL.

And the fact that Kesha and Kelly are even in the same sentence to begin with is just

Ew, I prefer the current chart, at least that way Ke$ha is not #1... at least for now.

This is a very interesting and eye-opening chart. Thanks for making it.
But how did you construct this chart? By just taking each playlist and ranking the songs spinwise? I don't think this is how radio stations did it. That is, they simply submitted playlists ranking songs from 1-30, but the order was not necessarily in spin order. I think that requests and popularity also factored in and would change the order of songs on individual playlists. So, this chart might even be more different...

I think that requests and popularity also factored in and would change the order of songs on individual playlists. So, this chart might even be more different... Basically I looked at the 1980 & 1981 charts and how many weeks on average songs that reached #1 stayed on the charts, songs that reached #2, #3, #4 etc. For instance most #1 songs stayed in the top 40 for about 16-19 weeks, etc. For the top 10 songs I took into account their position on the Itunes chart which accounts slightly for their order. So based on my methodology, Meet Me Halfway, Fallin' for You, Down, and Use Somebody (to name four songs) should all be considered recurrent songs now.

I think the old charts before PPW era were just an inverse point system on each radio station's playlist.

This is going to be an awful joke that I don't agree with but the opportunity is here so I'm taking it: Ke$ha is skinny, and that fact probably carries a lot of gravity with people who have a lot of mass to move around. I bet Kelly carries much more gravity than Ke$ha. Doesn't she have a moon now?
