^ I prefer Cook to Jovi anyday LOL. Me too, but he was the closest thing to a male pop/rock guy that didn't sound too pop I could think of that was not pop-punkish. ??? Okay, I think I just confused myself. Heh.

He needs to do *something*. He's been out of the public eye for over a year now, really. I agree. Actually something should have been done when he performed on Idol. He really only had two hit singles (Time of My Life, Light On) and a minor one (Come Back to Me). He really needs something big to start the era off

It's going to be interesting to track his next album sales.. he's been been out of the public eye for so long I think he'll need a smash single to even reach gold this time.

I tend to agree. It was very telling that even after his praised performance on Idol, the song barely broke the Top 200 on iTunes, and that was WITH an organized buying effort by his fans.

Nah I think he'll reach gold with no problem. Touring really helped him sell the first time.

I hope he will but I think he'll need a hit single in Top 40 to remind people who he is after all this time.
His highest peak in Top 40 so far was LO at #20. I wonder if his next single could do better than LO this time.

tbh I really don't remember that many people knowing who he was even right after Idol. It's been proven in the past couple years that being on Idol doesn't mean anything. I don't think he went platinum because he had just gotten off Idol, I think him going platinum was all do to his own work.

???
Organized buying campaign for Jumpin' Jack Flash? Que pasa? Unless you are talking about one of those international fan gifting threads that pop up for everything. But that's not the same thing. There was no fan campaign for that song.
I don't know what he'll sell this time, but I don't think gold is out of reach. I do think he needs a strong lead single though. Like 90% of everyone else releasing a record. Heh. We'll see how it goes.

I do not think gold is out of reach at all. Cook seems to have retained a strong fan base since his last album and I am sure that once new material is released more people will be interested in his stuff. I do think that platinum is out of the question.

Hell, he's still getting modest radio airplay for his three mainstream singles, and they've all been out for quite some time. I feel good that HAC will be very open to his lead single and that CHR will at least be open to it.

I think some Idol fans need to reset their expectations for how songs on the show are supposed to sell when those songs aren't singles, or are very, very new singles. A lot of people will buy something only after they've heard it a few times. So songs getting decent radio airplay will nearly always sell far better than songs with very little radio airplay or no airplay at all. Jumpin' Jack Flash was a freakin' cover song that he sang once... on Idol. IMO, it's not even that great of a song for the Rolling Stones. The only iTunes promo it got was a little corner ad on the American Idol page, and it went up a day or two after he performed it. Of course it wasn't going to sell a whole lot. On the subject of Cook "doing something," he's taking the normal between album time away from the spotlight. I'm not sure what he's supposed to be doing that's so public.

The thing is his album/singles did not have crazy longevity. This was released in the fall of 2008 and his last single was released in March 2009 (May if you count Permanent) so he basically has been off the radar for a year +. For a new artist imo that is a long time without new material

It will all depend on material. He still has a fanbase so that alone will earn him some decent sales. Personally, I don't see him ever hitting it big with pop, so he should stick to the HAC route as that format was the one that embraced him last era.

It will all depend on material. +1 I do think though that if the first single is big enough pop could jump on board. But yea HotAc will eat up anything he puts out

I really want him to have that career defining album and I think it's safe to say this era is his only chance. #fact_is all idols sell less and less with time, with the exception of Kelly's Breakaway, and sadly I don't think that U&I song will get him there.
I think the type of rock they went for on the last album is not where he belongs, he should leave that to Daughtry and other acts w/a tone much more gritty and loud than his. IMO his voice is much more vesitile than theirs, he should add some elements of punk to his uptempos, and go a bit darker/alternative with the ballads.

I wish he would do songs more like he performed on Idol. Always Be My Baby was amazing and a song similar to that would hit big for him.

I agree, actually I think the ABMB recording, suprisingly, compliments his voice better than anything he's done since. I'm not sure he should go that pop on his record, but I think the song's dramatic build up from soft to powerful, the melodic/not so shouty chorus and the lack of agressive production overpowering his vocals is what made this one work for him.

I think he has a quiet but strong fanbase, I think he will go GOLD easily. I don't know how the singles will do, we will have to wait to hear them- it will depend if they are any good.

Any word on when his single will be released? David just got into the studio to record last week. He did a couple of weeks of preproduction before that. They were finishing up base and drums of the first batch of songs yesterday, and doing guitars after that. I assume they are doing the single candidates 1st.

I cannot wait for this new album! I agree he needs a hot new single to remind everyone who he is as he has been out of the spotlight for awhile now.
When is his album coming out?

There hasn't been a date set. All we know is "the fall". He and the band started real recording last week. They should be done by mid august at the latest (?) ETA: 2 songs from Cookie's pre-Idol album Analog Heart mysteriously showed up on his publisher's list of Cookie songs today. Previously the only songs up there have been the ones that were on DCTR or at one point under consideration for the album. The songs were Let Go: And Porcelain: I know it probably doesn't mean anything but it could be interesting to talk about at least. Maybe one or both of these will be on the new album. Here's the list of collaborators so far. www.davidcookofficial.com/us/blog/running-tally-songs-dctr2

Those songs are terrible- some people just aren't meant to be songwriters. it's interesting he is being thrown in the direction of HOT AC when it's pretty obvious his inclination is toward a heavy rock sound.

I think he's a lot more rock than the label wants him to be or promotes him as. They put out the slower Pop/Rock songs as singles while not touching the more rock stuff on the album. But when he does a live show, he puts on a pretty great rock concert. I know he most likely couldn't get airplay at rock radio, but I'd like to see them put out some songs with a bit more edge for HAC and Top 40.
