Amazon shockingly had Don't You (Forget About Me), so I got it. It's totally nice to hear new David come out of my speakers. Can not wait for his first single.

Having said all that, couldn't they find an appropriate original song on the current album to use. When the guy hasn't even had a really big hit himself it's a shame that he has to waste the exposure on a cover. I know it's better than nothing but it's not as good as exposing one of his own songs either. I agree, although being the Idol exit song wouldn't necessarily guarantee him anything. I'd rather his first single be a great song than just one that happens to work as an exit song.

I tend to agree with that, K. Hook. I'd prefer for the next single to be the best radio song off of his CD, not just a song that works for a boot song.
And I like this cover, so that's a plus.

A Ryan Tedder one? That sounds good. I can't wait to listen to it. Maybe next week?

^Judging from Tedder's previous work, I doubt it. That said, I look forward to hearing this.

Original or not, I'm a huge fan of Tedder's work and I think David has one of the best tones of any current artist out there. His voice sounds absolutely phenomenal on record. Needless to say, I am super excited to hear this.

Already Gone, Sleepwalker, and Battlefield are all great songs. Ten to one this David Cook song will be no exception.

My guess...this is the really leaning pop song on the album. David needs a hit so this must be the big attempt for one. I don't dislike Ryan Tedder or his songs but at the same time I think he's a little played out. Oh well...

...and isn't David a song writer (or claims to be). Why the need for the continued help writing songs? I could go on and on about that. Changing times I guess.

Changing times I guess. i'm not defending him but a lot of artists like to collaborate with other writers and artists. His label also probably feels like he is not in a position to stand on his own two feet writing wise especially if they are fronting a lot of money.

I read that he has written/co-written all the songs in the album. It doesn't make him less of a songwriter, but I also suspect the label wanted him to work with some established names. It feels natural to me.
I hope this is a good one.

Posted this earlier on the CHR thread for The Last Goodbye, but thought I should bring it here in light of the discussion around Cook's songwriting abilities. Here's what Ryan Tedder had to say in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter about the new single and about working with David: j.mp/eE9F3RTHR: What about David Cook, did he voice any concerns coming into this second record?
Tedder: I think a concern that anybody might have with working with me after "Already Gone," "Apologize," and "Halo" is that I’m going to give them this huge sweeping ballad. Even on Adam's last album, I gave him "Sleepwalker," but I'm kind of over that. I got sick of it about a year-and-a-half ago and stopped. David was, like, "I want to do something uptempo," so his first single, “The Last Goodbye,” you would never know that I wrote it. It’s really emotional and it hits you with the chorus about 40 seconds into the song, so it's just immediate.
THR: And how is David as a co-writer?
Tedder: Great, more than any singer I've worked with, he contributed enormously lyrically and musically – he can play, he knows voicing, chords and arrangements as well as lyrics. He's a full-on writer. I love David, he’s a great guy.

It sounds like it won't have a lot of the Tedder influence. It should be interesting.

Get a sneak peek at the lyrics for David's new single, "The Last Goodbye," below - in his own handwriting. "The Last Goodbye" is the first single from David Cook's upcoming sophomore album. I didn't want to lose you Leave you with a broken heart But wherever we are, we're miles apart I know that we tried, but this is the last goodbye Oh, I didn't want to let you go But wherever we are, we're miles apart I know that we tried, but this is the last goodbye

Even on Adam's last album, I gave him "Sleepwalker," but I'm kind of over that. I got sick of it about a year-and-a-half ago and stopped. Translation - Everyone was sick of my sound. I had to try something different or become irrelevant. I like Ryan well enough. I've seen him live and he actually isn't a bad singer but I think he's a bit overvalued as a songwriter so when I read that David went to Ryan with help I got a litte put off. On a different note, Matt Serletic, who produced David's new album (or some of it) is a judge on a new CMT show to find the next country superstar. I would look for him to plug David's album some during the show. A guy sang Matchbox Twenty's Unwell last night. Matt produced 3 MB20 albums and both of Rob's solo albums. He actually has several co-writes with Rob so I would expect something similiar on David's album.
